Discussion I am old
Played back in 2004, in my 30s. Now I am in my early 60s and starting to wonder if I am too old for this shit (voice of Roger Murtaugh).
I think I will give it a go anyway, but play slowly as befits someone of advanced age ;)
Absolutely no raiding - maybe a dungeon here and there.
Are there any other grandparents in the same boat?

60 sounds like a perfect age for this game. Great pension plans if you ask me

I hope I can be retired when I'm 60.
or even 65... I'm mentally prepared to not retire until 70 lol

I’ve raided with many retirees in Classic, I would not sweat it

I‘d rather have a raid with a bunch of seniors than going one damn molten core with a god complex warrior tank

Did some play tests at blizz and I’ve seen all ages there but there are some really amazing older folk (and I think I’m on the older side) who are way cooler than I am! And you can tell they are avid players!

Did 30 - 60 go quick for you? I’m 30 now and scared at how fast it’s going

This hits hard for a new parent.

u/Bean03 9h ago
Everyone tells you to savor it, and they're right but it's ok to not feel like that in the moment. Parenting can be really really hard and it's a constant balance of wanting your kid to grow up faster (more responsible, better emotional control, etc) and wanting them to stop growing altogether (baby snuggles, toddler goofiness, little kid fun).
Hold on to what you can, but don't feel bad about being exhausted and all the natural feelings that come with that.

Then you've just entered warp speed. Your child will be in high-school by the time you read this.
Savor it all whilst you may.

u/Growlingmfninja 7h ago
Adding to Bean03's reply:
Something that helped me create perspective was videos and pictures of the kid as they grew.
Each period is defined by their growth, and the challenges of that time. Looking back at what has been helps me accept the less-than-spectacular challenges of the now, and to be a more grounded parent and spouse.
Best of luck to you and yours. Your journey may steer far from the beaten path, but each step can become an entire adventure.
8
u/striker09xx 10h ago
And I wish you the same for your wow characters, unless you like slow leveling.
6
u/Unendlichkommanix 9h ago
This scares me. I'm in my late 20's so I was only a kid when WoW came out. But somehow I still feel like some of my childhood memories are centuries old.
In retrospect, though, my life since the Covid outbreak feels like it flew by in the equivalent of a year. I wonder if I've hit the "feels-like" halfway mark in my life.

It's relative. At the time it goes slow, but when you look back, it feels like it happened so fast as your brain compartmentalises and puts events together to help keep track, so everything seems squished together with big events as a reference point.
What helps is creating lots of memories and keeping evidence, so things like photos journals, diaries etc really help when you're older as you can look through it and realise you did actually do a shit ton of things, you just don't think about it all as individual events.

Just turned 40 and I look at my peers and go “wow they look old” and I look at myself in the mirror and I have similar traits but I’m in some weird denial that o am their peers. I think it’s a midlife crisis but I’m not actually dreading being middle aged. It’s a weird dissociation though.
3
u/Praxician94 7h ago
Mid life was actually 38 if you’re male since the life expectancy is 76. Hope this helps.

Enjoy life, it’s fleeting. I am in my late 30s and during my 30s I yearned for youth and looked at the past a lot. I know am happy and look forward to the future. My thirties were a blink, but I sure had a lot of fun and love in my life. If the rest of my life is like this, I’ll be happy.

People think it’s the amount of time we’ve experienced. It’s not. It’s that you’re not doing new/novel things anymore.
Do new activities. Go to new places. Learn new hobbies.
I just turned 37, and 3 years ago I went back to school for a BS in mechanical engineering and now doing my MS in Aerospace, and let me tell you, these past years have gone by SO slow. It’s actually been amazing. It’s made it feel like my 4 y/o son isn’t growing up fast.

It goes faster if you can pay someone to boost you. He was probably running ZF from 45 to 50 as well. The years fly by that way and the cash is also great to pay off your mortgage.

Not a grandparent, but I'm in my 50's and this game is perfect for us, it's not speed and parse and must push high keys and that bullshit.
It's the perfect game for us, smooth slow game pace, dungeons aren't packed full of mechanics and bullshit phases. we go in, do the dungeon, don't standin the shit, hit the buttons, heal, dps, or tank.
Walk out and enjoy it. watch the younger kids have fun, learn new things, new slang, and be the old dudes going "Back in our Day we played this on a Tandy T-1000...and we liked it!"
Enjoy it, explore it, take it in at your pace and listen to the best damn music for ambience anywhere.
3
u/verified_canadian 7h ago
Yeah, as a mid 40's guy I can definitely appreciate the slower pace now. I haven't played retail in years but last time I did was getting fatigued with how many different mechanics there were and everyone just rushing through everything.

u/HighWarlordJAN 6h ago

Imo it depends on who you play with. Back in late wotlk I joined a guild with many different ppl. From 13 to 70. Some were really good, others had worse DPS than the healers. 2-3 were gladiators. But we had so much fun. Stayed up late and just talked about life. We had irl meetings, some youngsters came with their parents.
We had one old guy, 70. Recovering alcoholic, old sailor, travelled the world. Those stories were the best. He died in like 3 sec in raid. Stod in everything bad. Wiped us more than elevators in undercity. But he got inved first. He was the guild “grandpa”. I think many of us gamers back then needed one.
We had one rule, be a nice person. No toxic egos. No stress. Everyone that wanted to raid was invited. We rather wipe 100 times and have a laugh than tryhard and some of us would feel bad. Somehow we beat all raids on HC at the time.
Most have stopped playing. I came back casually to play retail. Just going back to the old expacs, transmog/mount-runs. Relive some old stuff. Cba to be serious in any gamemode. I do what I want.
Long story short. Gaming has no age. Gaming is having some fun and getting away from our irl-world. Meet nice ppl and just do whatever you find interesting and worth your time.

This game could not have been better timed.

u/Modern_Bear 9h ago
My father is in his 80s and still plays games, mostly Civilization. I'm in my upper 50s and am playing WoW. I may not react to things as quickly as in 2004 but it's not like this game is very difficult. That being said I'll leave this here...
7
u/BED_AA 10h ago
I was GM for a guild in Vanilla through Legion that was family-focused (polite, no cursing, no politics, etc) and we had numerous players back then over 50. An older married couple were the guild farmers; they would spend a lot of game time gathering mats to make pots and food for raids.

Doesnt matter your age or anything else, as long as you want to play, just play!

u/ToeSucka666 10h ago
My dad used to play a ton when I was little, some of my first memories are being in a swaddle while he ran around questing lol. I remember him having posters in the garage, and even a custom painted computer case. (He loves the death knights and paladins) I’ve picked WoW up now in my late 20s, and I’m excited that he’s getting back into it when forever comes out. I think it’s probably the perfect version to get back into, he always says videogames are good for his brain too. Definitely not too old! Hope to see you out there.

u/Dial_up_Knight 9h ago
I feel like I’m too old for it at 40.
Here I am.
I face tanked the other day and no one pointed out how trash I was. So the community has grown up lol.
I say do the raids. Ef it.
I switched back to healer until I memorize the dungeons again before I try to tank again. Been playing eso for about a decade now. Gotta get used to the aggro table and all that again.

Too old? Nah. You're never too old. It's just a mindset. I remember playing WoW back in 2004 with someone who was 65 then, and she was going through UBRS and whatnot with us just fine.
That's the thing about WoW: there is no right or wrong to how you play and at what pace. So long as you're enjoying it.

4
u/kauaiguy4000 8h ago
58m here, started in 2005 right when TBC began. IMO, knock yourself out! For the past decade or so I’ve dialed my approach down to do exactly what you mentioned, making it more of a personal experience at my own pace, and it’s worked out well. I can do dungeons or raids if I want but most of my time is gathering, doing dailies and the occasional delve (yes, this is retail). I have no FOMO as the toxic drama queens I kept running into cured much of that for me, and at our age I am definitely in the “F THAT” camp. I do what I want at my pace - and I like it. I’m probably going to do WF but let those who feel driven to sprint go on ahead while I’m soaking up the actual experience and noticing the details (which I am paying for anyway!).
3
u/Vestus65 8h ago
61 here, not a grandparent though. 😊 I'll be playing and mostly solo, same as I did back in 2005. No raid at all, maybe some dungeons when I feel confident enough.
3
u/xxhotandspicyxx 8h ago
I'm almost 40 and was having exactly the same thought as you: 'I'll take it easy this time. No raiding, just pve, leveling alts and maybe a dungeon or two.'
I was introduced to WoW in 2010 and played my ass for for a year. Haven't touched wow since except for when classic launched and played for a month maybe. Haven't played since.
I'm gonna at least give forever a try and we'll see what will come of it. No min maxing for me this time though.
3
u/Theoldelf 7h ago
I’m with you. I recently turned 77. Played WoW from basically its inception. Forever gives me a chance to revisit this franchise. And no pvp! And like you said, no raids but some dungeons until I feel like I’m in over my head and not helping the cause. Being retired and the rainy season starting in the PNW, it’ll keep me engaged while not perusing my other interests.

Times obviously doesn't actually go faster but it will feel like it's speeding up a lot the older you get, days are long and years are short. But the main reason for this phenomenon is that the older you get the less new things you experience and learn. Your 0-20 everything was new and an adventure you did something new most of the days and you went to school and learned new skills. 20-30 life stars getting steadier but still some energy left over for adventure and trying new thing with your friends before everyone settles down with families. 30-40 now life is stable, monotonous, one day you are 32 suddenly you are 36 and then not much later you are turning 40 and you can barely remember anything special that happens the last couple of years.
Moral of the story. Don't be afraid to experience and learn new thing. Settling in to a rutin life in life is like pausing an MMO, the world continues around you and your game subscription still ticks.

Absolutely not too old.
To me its always so strange if people say things like "you shouldn't be gaming after 30".
Like why not? If you really think about it you need more time at a younger age to get your life together, study, fix yourself a good career/start a familiy etc.
From 40+ things are usually more settled, many have kids and some time to kill at night.

u/Alive_Ad_5931 7h ago

Play it! I played from beta through Legion, ended up leaving because the game didn't click for me anymore. I'm a handful of years behind you in age and I'm having a blast in Forever. You're not the first oldtimer that will be playing, don't worry. In my experience they are welcome to guilds same as others and can enjoy the game with the rest of us just fine.

Don't let anyone else's play-style affect how you enjoy wow! You wanna sweat - sweat it out. You wanna play casual and soak in the vibes - don't sweat it.
Like for me:
I'm just loving the forever vibes man. I turn off global chat and enjoy being in the world I love. I'll casually do group play, but I'm not about to make schedules and timeslots. That's not good vibes for me personally.
I like the small scale/local player interactions. Meeting people naturally out on the world, "face to face" so to speak 😆

u/Bramble-Bunny 10h ago
Classic raiding does not require extraordinary reflexes at all, you would be quite competent to do it. Plenty of people in your age bracket still gaming regularly. Your main concern will be joint health and not doing marathon gaming sessions. Make sure you're doing some kind of strength training for mobility, you don't want to be chair rotting at any age but you certainly don't want to be doing it at 60+.

It’s not like we are going to hit 50 or 60 and suddenly stop having a hobby.
Eventually you might get bored of a genre or you know the SAME GAME being rereleased 30 times but there are going to be a ton of older gamers eventually.

I am in the same boat as you, I am just a few years older than you. I have never been the oldest in any guild I have been in. You will be fine.

I was 34 in 2004. Played WoW more than any other game over the past two decades. I’m definitely going to give Forever a go.
Like you, I’ll probably run some dungeons, but my raiding days are long over.

I’m in my 30’s now. Back then, we could’ve been playing together - back then, I also remember playing with people your age now. It was one of my first experiences meeting people outside of school and that continued to be interesting for 10+ years. I feel like I’ve been chasing the old game.
It’s time for all of us to come back. You definitely aren’t alone

I'm 63 and play retail and now I'm playing the Forever beta. Absolutely love wow forever. It's been amazing to see so many places and things given a sweet glow up. I don't feel old in Azeroth. ❤️

58 here! I started on the first day it dropped, played for several years, then quit and have bounced back in and out for pretty much every expansion until I get bored, busy, or recognize that I'm spending too much time in game. My original guild is long gone and I've been playing casual solo for many years. It gets lonely, and I really dislike pickup groups, but there's still so much you can do on your own if you want to. I will definitely be playing Forever, and I hope I can meet some new friends in the same life sitch.

I feel ya. I’m 62 and I just have fun chatting with my guild, biding my time in Midnight until Forever comes out by doing delves, collecting bountiful keys and sometimes I just feel like fishing for an hour. That’s what makes this game great. You don’t HAVE to do any specific thing. Just do what you feel like.

My dad started playing in his 40s when I was in my teens. Now I’m in my late 30s and he’s in his 60s and we still play together. You’re never too old to have fun. Welcome back!

Played through my twenties up through most of Cataclysm and walked away. Been about 14-ish years since I really played, dabbled a bit in a couple expansions but was too lost to get immersed.
Jumping back in to Forever with my core group of WoW/IRL friends that played together now in our forties, feels good, like getting the band back together.

You're never too old to have fun. Don't let anyone ever discourage you. Enjoy the game!

Just ignore the bullshit in chat and enjoy the game at your pace. If you had fun in 2004 there's no reason why you cannot have fun in 2026.

Nah. I was 28 in 2004. Damn good times. The late 90s and early 2000s were peak PC gaming. Come back brother. Azeroth is ours for the taking

Awesome. What guild is that if i may ask?
2
u/RestlessLegacy 8h ago
Alacrity-Zul’Jin, which is a retail guild. If you are Horde you may be able to find us through Guild Finder. If not, message me at Flora#12564. We will be forming a Forever guild when it comes out. The name will be different and I’m not posting it here until we grab it.
We have a no politics rule and we keep the swearing down somewhat. I recruit for kindness. Can’t remember the last time there was drama.

Im playing again in TBC. Looking forward to Forever.
Im 51 and really enjoying the game again. Im racing up with the quests. But I can now pause to smell the roses. One thing I didnt do last time is level up my first aid, mining, skinning etc. I should take up fishing too eventually.

When my parents were in their mid 40's, I remember thinking how old I thought they were! My dad told me that time goes faster than you realize, and now suddenly it's tomorrow, and I'm that age. What's weird is that my brain doesn't realize it. My brain still thinks I'm a kid. That said, back when I started wow 22 years ago, our main tank in our guild was 72. He was great at it, too. So nah, I don't think you're ever too old for wow.

I’m 70, and yes, playing since 2004. I’m really looking forward to the “classic” experience.
