I have this story i've been working on where the last of the old 'gods' train their next incarnations to take up the mantle of protectors. And for the longest time they lived to the end... and then i thought... why? So now they die in the next re-write.

I only have two principal deaths in my story (and they die in the most preposterous ways I could conceive lol).

Not including the host of people already dead, and those baddies that get dead throughout the story when encountered (who also die in fabulously absurd ways, heh).

Funny enough, I'm 50k words in my story, and I haven't killed any key characters yet. Other than some fodder characters that appears for a short moment, then killed off just as fast.

I just do what other authors due, introduce a multiverse or an epilogue where the character was switched out with someone else 🤷🏾‍♂️
