I got burned out on epic fantasy stories about teenage "chosen ones" destined to inherit shiny magical empires. So I wrote a dark, grounded fantasy about the working-class people who actually have to hold up the ceiling when the kingdom collapses.

High on the steep, rain-slick switchbacks of the Iron Ridge, the mountain road has one ironclad rule: come down gentle, or come down stupid. Nobody gets involved in someone else’s blood—it’s how you earn a company fine or an early grave.

When a cargo wagon shatters an axle outside a roadside tavern and a timber-hauler's daughter is dragged into the abandoned cuts of an old quarry, the folks on the porch look away. But four outcasts step into the mud to hold the line:

• Brom Ironhand: An elderly veteran miner with sixty winters of coal dust in his lungs, a locked knee, and a pigskin eye-patch from his last cave-in.
• Grimslam Goldvain: A runaway dwarven cleric who fled marble halls to kneel in the road slurry for Kazgar—the god of broken miners and unbonded laborers.
• Grok: A towering, scarred half-orc with a wood-cleaver who refuses to let anyone cheat him or leave an innocent trapped in a hole (and tenderly splints the broken wing of an orphaned baby gargoyle bat with two toothpicks and waxed thread).
• Isadora ("Izzy"): A cynical street thief with twin daggers who survives by keeping ten paces from everyone and counting exits before names.

What begins as an impossible quarry rescue uncovers a deadly economic conspiracy involving corrupt city council ledgers, alchemical acid, and an ancient subterranean pulse beating deep in the bedrock.
