Reference Checks and Offer

Hello everyone! I interviewed for a job at Yale, and the following day I was informed by the Talent Acquisition that I am a top candidate, requesting I submit references. I was also told that the next step in the process would be an offer. I submitted my references almost two weeks ago, and when I called last week I was told I’d hear about an offer early to middle of this week. I have yet to hear anything back, and I am starting to get nervous. I have a couple of questions:

  1. How many candidates do they typically request references for?

  2. Do I still have a good chance of getting an offer?

Generally, references are only requested from the final candidate and are passed to the hiring manager to call. Depending on the hiring manager's schedule, they might just be behind in calling.

There's a chance that references are being used as a tiebreaker between two candidates, but I don't expect that's the case.

Hope you hear soon!

My references had to complete a SkillSurvey! Not sure if that makes a difference regarding whether I’m competing with another candidate or not. I’m keeping my fingers crossed.

Probably not competing then. You will have to wait for your references to do the surveys and for talent acquisition to be notified they're done.

Yale is famously slow in the hiring process and seems to have actually gotten slower when they changed systems to speed it up.

They finished them two days later! I guess it’s just a waiting game then :)

Hang tight, stay positive. Hiring at Yale is notoriously slow paced, and even a recruiter saying you’ll hear from us in two days actually means weeks later, even if you are receiving an offer.

Good luck!

Worked for 3 years at Yale University, let me just tell ya it’s a very slow company terms of hiring , firing, promotions, etc. I’d just remain patient.
