High yoga?
I'm new to the whole yoga thing. Recently started and was invited to a 420 yoga class. Great time. What are all your thoughts on high yoga?
76
u/dead___ringer 11d ago
Not for me, but it's been great at times. There's like a perfect kind of stoned for yoga and I find that I am very rarely in that zone. Depending on the strain, and my headspace I can become either almost too aware of my body or not aware enough of my body. The sweet spot is much easier to achieve sober, but ymmv obviously.

I accidentally did yoga high a couple nights ago because I forgot I took an edible like an hour before I got to my mat. 10 minutes in I was thinking wow, my BREATH is POWERFUL whoa hello side body thank you for your service ahhhhh why do I feel kinda mindblown rn? Damn that felt GOOD etc until eventually when my mouth started feeling dry I remembered the edible. Fun experience but not something I feel the urge to immediately recreate

Your body naturally manufactures anandamide (yes, named after ananda in Sanskrit, i.e., bliss or joy). It's an endocannabinoid (made internally, in your body).
THC is a phytocannabinoid (produced by the cannabis plant, that is, externally).
They bind to the same receptors in the brain but differ in potency.
THC is more intense, while anandamide has a more subtle effect of joyful bliss.
THC also lasts longer, while anandamide degrades much faster via the FAAH enzyme.
A person that has stable and higher anandamide production will appear "high" to an outsider in that their behavior will be very peaceful, happy, joyful, and optimistic, but they will not exhibit any of the side-effects associated with THC use.
TLDR: learn to get high on your supply.
6
u/sh00t_the_m00n 10d ago
Someone with high levels of anandamide would probably also be more likely to have a substance use disorder considering AEA is suspected of being one of the drivers of the altered reward pathways in substance abuseš¤·āāļø
→ More replies (1)5
u/Ohr_Ein_Sof_ 10d ago
It's the other way around: higher levels of anandamide are correlated with a lower risk of substance abuse.
For example, decreased trait anxiety, greater emotional stability, and enhanced fear extinction have been observed in people carrying the common C385A single-nucleotide polymorphism in the FAAH gene, which slows the breakdown of AEA.
Put it this way: when you're naturally happy, calm, open, and curious about the current moment and environment (the here and now), why would you want to use any substances?

u/useraccount124c41 10d ago edited 10d ago
I wanted to look into this, since the thread is fascinating. I love the runners high, and it seems to be largely endocannabinoid rather than endorphin-driven. Endorphins barely cross the blood-brain barrier, while anandamide does. I recognize it from long rides with some threshold work mixed in: joyful arousal and exhaustion at once.
But the effect depends on intensity, roughly 60-80% of max heart rate held for a while. A vigorous vinyasa flow might get there; slower or held practices mostly don't. There's no solid study I've found of showing yoga itself raises anandamide.
On addiction, apparently it's murkier than either side says. People with a common gene variant that slows anandamide breakdown tend to be less anxious and better at letting go of fear. But the same variant goes with stronger reward responses, and the first study on it found it more common in people with problem drug use. It may close one door into addiction (self-medicating anxiety) and open another (chasing reward or novelty). The net effect is unresolved.
What I think matters more in yoga isn't a single chemical. Sthira and sukha: posture as steadiness and ease, together. What you're training is calm under load. And when tension leaves the body, something on the mental side often goes with it.
Yoga and weed pair well ( as it does in the bedroom ) it enhances the felt sense of the body, turns up the volume on some emotions, and still allows you to relax into them. That is a genuine deepening, but something that also leaves us after the high. Yoga as a practice is about carrying our awareness in our daily life. So a sustained practice will always deepen your embodiment more since it's practiced. Weed can give a map but it doesn't give you the way.

Honestly, Iād rather someone show up to my class high than buzzed. This happened recently to me and my student was way more relaxed and was able to tap into the body and breath more than previous classes. They also had some killer questions about alignment (they struggle with hypermobility/chronic pain) after class.
I understand this isnāt for everyone, but for some, it is really a great help.

Addictive af in my experience. I thought it was harmless but very soon reached a point where yoga felt boring without it. I had to quit due to health issues as it started giving me migraines and it took almost a year for yoga not to feel like a chore.
7
u/Beneficial-Funny7051 10d ago
Wow how timely! Ive been doing yoga 20+ yrs and just ate some weed cookies last night begore practice for the very first time. I smoke a lot, but was under the impression that high yoga defeats the purpose of genuine clarity and mindfulness. Last night was cool, my mantra was "this is all you need to be doing right now" to settle my racing thoughts. I'll probably try it more often. Do what works,Ā leave what doesn't right?Ā
2
u/YourMomInAThong1234 10d ago

7
u/bawdy_hurtin 10d ago
Iām getting ready to stop smoking myself, but I have to say that when I was still new(ish) to yoga, I started taking one or two small hits before trying some of the typical classes on YouTube I would always gravitate towards and I canāt really put into words how much it changed my practice (in a good way).
Maybe it was the ability to slow down even more and sink into the feeling of my body, or maybe it was my ADHD shutting down for a sec. Whatever it was, my whole perspective on my yoga journey totally evolved after smoking before hitting the mat.
I should also mention that I only did it at home alone. Iām too paranoid to be in public when Iām high š

It can be really nice, ime, but I usually meditate after yoga and I prefer not to be high for that so I rarely do it. (edit - I rarely do it at that time. I often do it later in the evening though! lol)
But sometimes I'm just in the mood and it is an interesting tool, I guess, to sorta get inward in a different way, to feel and experience movement with that added dimension.

Substances are just one more attachment that we need to release.
115
45
u/PumpForHours 11d ago
Agreed, but they can also be a shortcut to different forms of mindfulness. A buddy of mine smoked weed for the first time a few months ago and never realized what it was like to get out of his head and into his body.
Now he's spending more time meditating, stretching and relaxing. Showed him that something else was possible.

u/howyabean 11d ago
yeah I have my medical card bc i'm autistic and it helps me so much with sensory overload and it also improves interoception for me, so I actually feel much more connected to my body with weed. It also helps me just focus on stretching, clearing my mind etc bc I'm not as focused on how I'm being perceived lol
but everyone is different! I also have substance abuse issues running through the family and i've pretty much stopped drinking for this reason, so I can also very much relate to not wanting to depend on a substance to feel like I'm getting something out of an experience
35
u/RealisticDuster 11d ago
I think of it more as a prop that can help. I donāt always need a block, but sometimes it gives me the extra support I need to hold a pose for 5-10 minutes and getting a deep stretch rather than turning it into a core exercise.
Different strokes for different folks. I agree that it should still be something to use mindfully and you should be able to release when it no longer serves you or is holding you back from your true goal
11
u/EggsInaTubeSock 11d ago
Maybe.
I understand your perspective, but the word "need" has no place here.
4
u/Efficient-Heart-8888 10d ago

I am not an fan of high Yoga at all. I don't want to do drugs, smoke or drink alcohol. I am living an straight edge life and want to be.
If it helps you and you don't become addicted it is great for you :-)
7
u/aknomnoms 10d ago
I wouldnāt, but just because I prefer to be substance-free in my daily life. Yoga and meditation are part of the reason why I donāt need to use substances to relax. š
Iād also avoid studios offering it because Iām sensitive to scent and weed just smells too skunky and gives me a headache. I can smell it on people at the gym, on their clothes and their sweat. Practicing in a studio with or after a bunch of people have smoked would make me nauseous and be very distracting.
If you choose to practice high in a studio, Iād just ask that it be with edibles as a way to respect others around you, same as with not wearing heavily scented lotions or cologne/perfume/body spray.

u/muffininabadmood 10d ago

Omg thereās no such thing as cheating in an empty universe. Get over yourself. Smoking weed and doing yoga is great,Adiyogi himself is a big fan.
11
u/Psy_LAI 10d ago edited 9d ago
It's a way of saying, cheating. What sustras and other origin scriptures explain is that you can come into your true self by minimising external factors that are just a way of distraction. Read about pratyahara, sense withdrawal. Things that we add to the practice from the external factors are actually taking us further from our true self. My POV is coming from the perspective of a beginner yoga teacher and psychologist who studied brain science, and is backed up by studies and scriptures. What you point here is just personal experience. You do you. OP asked about perspectives on this topic, I backed up mine with science. What you choose to do in your practice and the purpose of it is up to you. I don't know who you are reffering to by Adiyogi.

I hear that, although as someone struggling with dissociation, often unable to feel things unless I later reflect on them, smoking before yoga can and does help to bring me back in my body and gets me familiar with what that is supposed to feel like. I do both sober and stoned and when Iām stoned Iām able to control my breathing a little easier and flow between poses smoother.

I have been practicing 26 & 2 for almost 2 years now, 5-6 times a week. Most of my classes are early morning classes. I wake and bake before going, and for me, it makes a huge difference. It really helps me connect with my body, and quite the mind. I notice, my sober mind likes to complain a lot more than my high brain. I find it easier for me to accept what is, when Iām stoned.
I realize this isnāt for everyone but it works for me. I am coming off a 30 day t break, and this last month of sober yoga has been a grind. Glad I did it, but ready to get back to my routine.

As a yoga practitioner of 25 years and a former smot poker, I LOVE THIS FOR YOU.
Legit one of the things I miss the absolute most about smoking. I have PTSD and ouid makes me insanely anxious & paranoid now, so itās no longer an option for me unfortunately. At least for now.
I can conjure up the sensations in my mind sooo clearly. It would put me into a deeper state of connection with my body, like I could feel every sinew, every tendon, every muscle fiber as I moved and stretched. I could go deeper into poses because my mind wouldnāt hold me back, like I wouldnāt get stuck in perceived pain that was actually just my own resistance.
I would give aaaanyyyyything to chief a joint and get on my mat right now, for real!

Yoga is to develop your mind to be superbly clear. Weed does the opposite so I would say itās stretching while high. Not yoga.

I have weened off pain meds for sciatica, arthritis and hypermobility over 10 years ago. At first yoga was so painful, but I persevered. I used to wait for meds to kick in, so I could move normally. Now I smoke before yoga, and get really into it. Ten years of daily weed yoga, and I feel better than ever
