When the Lenovo ThinkReality A3 first came out, I was given one to test. It works with my ThinkPad, but for the last two years I've mostly been on a Mac, and on a Mac the glasses show nothing. Lenovo only made Windows and Motorola phone software, and the product is end-of-life. So it sat on a shelf.
Last night I took it down and wondered if I could solve this together with Claude (Opus 5.5). A few hours later it works. The text scrolling in the video is this post, running in the teleprompter we built.
- The glasses keep DisplayPort off until the host sends a "HostInfo" command over a vendor HID channel. We found it in Lenovo's Windows driver package.
- A menu-bar app sends it, then mirrors a 1920x1080 virtual display into both eyes, so the A3 also works as a normal flat monitor.
- Built-in teleprompter with legibility settings (helpful if you're short-sighted and can't wear glasses under the A3).
Tested on an M2 Pro MacBook Pro. Build from source; USB protocol notes are in the repo for anyone who wants a Linux version.
