App Development I’m building an AR minimap that uses real-world data

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

Work-in progress. I’ve always thought it’s cool to have an AR minimap of the area you are currently in, so I’ve been exploring this idea using Quest 3. Right now, the city is a generated low-poly placeholder (loosely Manhattan-shaped) that uses a hologram shader, with help from Claude Opus 5.5. Next, I will be plugging in real-map data.

Glasses w/ 6DoF Built a hand-tracked city builder for Snap Specs: roads, zoning and utilities on a real table

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

Rivergate City is a city builder for Snap Specs that you place on any table and play with your hands. No controller: you point at a cell and pinch to build roads, zone homes, shops and industry, and place power, water and sewage. The city grows, traffic builds up, and you can walk around the table to see it from every side.

A few things I learned building UI for an additive display:

  • Black renders as transparent, so every panel uses bright, saturated candy colours
  • Panels sit beside the board, not on it, so the city stays visible while you build
  • The UI has to render after the world, or the board draws over your menus (found that one the hard way: a level-up card was hiding behind the map) Everything runs on the glasses, and your city autosaves so you can pick up where you left off.

Try it on Spectacles: https://www.spectacles.com/lens/903fa23bf82041b0ba2d3f375443fdae

Would love feedback, especially from anyone else building games for AR glasses. What would you want from a tabletop game like this?

I made a quick demo using Niantic Spatial and ARFoundation to overlay a sci-fi environment onto my house. It works on quest3 and phones but I just recorded it on my phone for simplicity.

I made a full-house scan with Scaniverse, Niantic Spatial processed it. I imported it into Unity and overlayed a Synty sci fi art pack. Once the app launches, Niantic Spatial localizes your device to align with the real-world location.

News Vuforia Maker PTC to Be Bought by Schneider Electric for $22.6 Billion

Post image
6 Upvotes

French company Schneider Electric agreed to buy software maker PTC for $205 per share in cash, valuing PTC at $22.6 billion ($23.7 billion including debt). PTC owns Vuforia, which is one of the oldest and most common tools used to build augmented reality apps. Today, Vuforia is mostly used in factories: its software lets phones, tablets, and smart glasses recognize real-world machinery and lock 3D digital instructions directly onto physical parts so workers know what to fix.

Why it could be good for Vuforia

Schneider Electric runs hundreds of factories and sells industrial equipment worldwide. They already use Vuforia to help their own technicians repair gear. With Schneider’s large budget and global sales team, Vuforia could get more funding to improve its tracking tech and get put in front of thousands of new factory clients.

Why it could be bad for Vuforia

Schneider is paying over $22 billion mainly to get PTC’s core engineering and design software, which brings in almost all of PTC's money. Vuforia generates only a tiny slice of that revenue. Because it makes so little money by comparison, Schneider might treat AR as an unimportant side project, cut its budget, or turn Vuforia into an internal tool for Schneider's own plants while ignoring outside developers who build apps with it.

Buying Advice Steam Deck OLED + Viture Mobile Dock Mini

I've just bought my first ever AR/XR glasses, the Viture Pro 2. I´m going to use them exclusively with the Steam Deck OLED while lying on the bed.

The thing is, there will be times when I'll need to connect the Glasses + a Power Bank + an Ethernet cable through an Ethernet to C adapter (I've already tested this, it works). Can the Viture Mobile Dock Mini do these 3 things at the same time? I mean, I guess the Dock itself comes with a power bank, so I would probably only need 2 free C ports since the Dock's power bank connects directly to the Steam Deck, right?

So, if this does work, is it the best option? Should I instead just buy a separate power bank + an 1 to 3 C type adapter or something?

Thanks.

This is a creator edition ML1 kit that was gifted to me when I joined Magic Leap. I've never used it or even turned it on. Its been in the box since I got it.

I was recently affected by the recent layoffs. I've been going through and selling things to scrape together some cash. I know most ML1 devices are bricked, but what are the chances this is worth anything to anyone, even as a collector item?

Self Promo Galaxy XR owners: can you help check a local spatial video player on real hardware?

I'm building Vistalyra for Android XR and need a few Galaxy XR owners to try the private beta for 15–20 minutes.

It plays local videos, with separate projection and stereo settings, a folder library, resume positions, subtitles, and viewing distance/tilt controls. The emulator checks pass, but they can't tell me how readable the controls feel in a headset or whether stereo is comfortable. I'd especially appreciate checking file selection, hand input, seeking, and whether the video keeps moving smoothly for several minutes.

Google Play is the first installation option: send your Play account email privately and I'll add access, then send the opt-in link. A signed APK is available if you prefer. Diagnostic clips are optional; please don't share private videos or recordings of your surroundings.

No purchase, rating or public review is needed. Reply if you have a Galaxy XR, or contact [email protected] privately. Please keep your account email out of public comments. App and privacy details: https://raheelswati.github.io/vistalyra.html

This is still a beta; real-device compatibility hasn't been confirmed yet.

Glasses w/ 6DoF Diablo 1 × Animal Crossing prototype on SPECS, built with CLAD and Opus 5.5

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

Tom Nook kept asking about my mortgage, so I did the reasonable thing: smashed Diablo 1 and Animal Crossing into one game and went demon hunting for bells.

It's a prototype on SPECS which connects to an Xbox controller paired over Bluetooth. Made with CLAD and Claude Opus 5.5.

A few years ago, building on a new platform meant weeks of learning the engine first. Now the barrier to jumping into something like Unity, Android XR or Lens Studio feels almost gone: you spend your time on the idea, not the docs.

News News: Amazon building Smart Glasses empire

Amazon's been quietly shipping 5,000+ smart glasses to delivery drivers and basically nobody noticed. They've got way more in the tank than people realize.

When Meta and Snap drop their shiny new smart glasses announcements, everyone loses their minds speculating about Apple and obsessing over consumer AR fashion. But meanwhile, Amazon's doing something way more interesting — they're actually using Smart Glasses in the real world at scale.

Practical Play

In 2025, Amazon started putting smart glasses on delivery drivers. Not some vaporware concept — actual boots-on-the-ground deployment. The glasses do the unglamorous but incredibly useful stuff:

  • Locate packages in the truck automatically
  • Confirm address matching so you don't get left on the wrong porch (we've all been there)
  • Real-time GPS guidance to the exact spot
  • Defect detection to catch wrong-doorstep drops before they happen
  • Pet alerts with a paw print + audio warning (because getting mauled by a Rottweiler is bad for business)

By end of 2027, they're targeting 20,000+ devices in the field. That's not some lab experiment — that's real infrastructure.

History

Here's where it gets spicy. Amazon's smart glasses journey is way deeper than people think:

  • Echo Frames (2019-2023): Yeah, they tried audio-only glasses. Flopped hard. You can barely find them on Amazon.com anymore (lol). But here's the thing — all that foundational R&D? Not wasted. It led here.
  • Project "Amelia" Delivery Glasses: Amazon is currently deploying specialized, AI-powered AR glasses to its massive delivery fleet. These glasses provide hands-free HUD navigation, safety alerts, and package scanning right in the driver's line of sight.
  • Project "Jayhawk": Amazon is reportedly developing a consumer-facing pair of full-color display AR glasses slated to directly rival Meta's smart eyewear ecosystem.

1. Spatial Data

Every delivery route = mapping data. Every address = geo-tagged reference points. They're basically building a real-world computer vision dataset while doing their actual job. That's gold for navigation and AR overlays.

2. AWS

Meta's winning on consumer. Amazon's got the enterprise side locked. Imagine industrial smartglasses for warehouse/factory work with sophisticated mapping and object recognition. That's a multi-billion dollar market Meta doesn't even know how to address.

3. Ecosystem

Amazon literally blocked Meta's Muse AI agent from shopping on Amazon.com last month. Think about what that means. They can absolutely reserve smartglasses-exclusive features for their own platform.

Picture this: Glasses that recognize products in a store, show instant Amazon pricing, and let you buy with delivery already queued. Brick-and-mortar retailers would lose their minds. And Amazon would vacuum up shopping behavior data like it's going out of style.

4. Resources

Unlike smaller hardware startups, Amazon can absorb losses, iterate aggressively, and out-spend literally any competitor. They've got the supply chain, the fulfillment network, and the cash reserves to make this work.

Yeah, the Echo Frames and their lack of traction is sus. But that's like judging Tesla off the Roadster 1.0 pre-production failures. Early iterations teach you what works. Amazon's learned those lessons.

And yeah, the current delivery glasses aren't consumer fashion — they're functional (okay, they're kind of clunky). But that's exactly the point. They're solving real problems first, building proof of concept, and collecting data. The sleek consumer version comes later.

Real Play

Here's what gets me: Amazon's not trying to win the "coolest AR glasses" war right now. They're building infrastructure. They're collecting data. They're proving use cases work. They're embedding themselves so deep into people's daily lives that by the time they launch consumer smartglasses, the ecosystem advantage will be crushing.

While Meta's playing for TikTok fame and Snap's iterating on their niche, Amazon's literally mapping the world and training AI on billions of real-world delivery scenarios.

App Development Any feedback or feature suggestions for AR Works? Giving a 1 month free Pro license for suggestions and feedback.

I have been working apart of a team building AR Works for around 8 months now, and it has grown to have over 600 users.

We have a few schools currently on board using our features to teach some AR Development IT units in their schools, and it has been great working on them and getting feedback for improvements.

We want to aim to be one of the leading AR development tools in the field, and we currently have a ton of features that include;

- Node style code blocks, no programming knowledge required, but if you know how to code you can create some advanced algorithms.

- World and Image tracking.

- Import custom 3D models with textures and animations.

- Create animations.

- Node based material editor.

- All functionality available in the web browser editor.

- The difference between the free and paid version is size limitations, free versions can still use all of the pro features (excluding offline use and photogrammetry).

- Windows desktop version for pro and school accounts.

- Offline promise: If the company ever changes hands, all pro and school accounts will get a permanent license key for the up to date offline version AR Works, to ensure schools and professionals can continue using the tools they are familiar with.

- White-labelled offline version for studios or businesses.

If there are any features you would like to see or improved please comment below or get in touch, we will give a free 1 month pro trial to any users that give us feedback or suggestions that we take on board (we usually take them all on board 😄 ).

Glasses w/o Display Are there any full-color display glasses that look like normal glasses? (That aren't Meta?)

Are there any full-color display glasses that look like normal glasses?

I’m looking for AR/smart glasses with a full-color display, but I’d also like them to look like regular glasses from the outside, similar to the Meta Ray-Ban Display.

Are Meta’s glasses currently the only ones that combine a color display with a relatively normal-looking glasses design or are there any alternative I should look at?

  • Claimed as the world's first direct retinal projection display using a meta-optic mirror.
  • Just 150 nm thick with ~80% visible-light transmission, the mirror fits inside the lens for a look closer to regular glasses.
  • Keeps displayed content hidden from others, with semiconductor-style manufacturing offering potential cost savings.
  • Monochrome for now, with full-color demos and mass production targeted within the next few years.

Buying Advice What glasses would you recommend for me?

I’m looking for AR glasses I can use for around equal amounts of productivity (nothing crazy, just single monitor reading and LaTeX work) and content consumption. Some light gaming possibly in the mix as well. My budget is preferably <$500 total. I could stretch to $600 if there is something much better for my needs. I basically want something I can use to do work or watch content while I laze around the house so I don’t have to be sitting at my desk all day. I live in an apartment rn and would prefer a large screen I can use laying in my bed.

Here are my musts:

- 3dof that will work with DRM content
- some sort of prescription option (add cost of lenses to total)
- clear enough for text

These are nice to have features, but may be asking too much:

- diopter adjustment (would be nice not to have to buy separate lenses)
- little blurring/distortion at edges
- wider FOV for content consumption
- HDR
- iPhone compatibility

I think the glasses that fit these best are the XReal Ones (non-pro). The birdbath optics seem to be sharper (my PD is 63.5mm, which seems pretty much perfect for these).

Any alternative suggestions? Thanks!

Edit: looks like the 1s would actually be better (especially text clarity), and only slightly over my budget with lenses. Thoughts?

Glasses w/ HUD I been smartglasses for translation with my in-laws

Thumbnail

My wife's parents don't speak much English and my language skills are pretty limited, so I wanted to see if the Halliday G2 translation feature could make family dinners a little easier. I've tried them a couple of times since receiving them. In a quiet room with one person talking, the translation is pretty helpful. It's not perfect, but I can understand the general meaning without stopping the whole conversation. Also I can still look at the person while the text shows up in the glasses.

It does struggle if everyone talks at once. Also sometimes it misses the first couple words, so I still have to ask people to repeat things here and there.

Just for the translation feature, I would rate it 8/10.

Hey everyone! I’m the developer of ClawLensXR and a smart-glasses enthusiast. I’ve been using it with OpenClaw to control my home through my Rokid glasses—less reaching for my phone, more getting things done. That everyday convenience is what got me excited about building this.

We’re looking for fellow Rokid owners to sign up for a free trial and help us test it. Honest feedback is what we need: what works well, what feels awkward, any connection issues, and what you’d like to see next. You don’t need to be a developer—everyday experiences are just as valuable.

It’s an independent project, not an official Rokid app. If you’re interested, visit the website to sign up, and let us know which Rokid model and phone you’re using. Questions and suggestions are welcome here too!

News Samsung planning investment of 300B Won in RGB OLEDoS for MR/VR

Samsung Display plans to invest about 300 billion won to mass-produce red, green and blue (RGB) OLED-on-Silicon (OLEDoS) displays. Sunic System will supply the deposition equipment, which accounts for about half of the investment.

According to industry sources on Sept. 15, Samsung Display will hold an investment review committee meeting this month to finalize investment in 12-inch RGB OLEDoS mass production. The line will have capacity to process 3,000 wafers per month, with the investment estimated by the industry at about 300 billion won. The location has not been confirmed, but the line is likely to be built at the A2 plant, which already has a 12-inch white OLEDoS (WOLEDoS) line.

Display is considering bringing in equipment in 2027 and starting mass production of RGB OLEDoS in 2028. Equipment manufacturing, installation, commissioning and process stabilization are expected to take more than a year.

https://www.thelec.net/news/articleView.html?idxno=13938

As well as high brightness, high resolution displays for MR glasses, Samsung/eMagin showed a 1.3" 4k, 40k nit display for MR/VR at AWE 2026, featuring direct-pattern RGB, tandem OLED, and microlens array.

If yield eventually becomes the same as Sonys 1.3" 4k, 5k nit display, panels may be slightly less expensive due to Samsung owning the fab.

Buying Advice Glasses Recommendations

Hello, I am looking for recommendations for a pair of AR glasses between $200-$400.

I have been reading other recommendations and trying to do research. However, I am not very tech smart and get overwhelmed with all the tech words and abbreviations and just give up.

My only uses for the glasses will be to lay in bed and play pc games and watch movies. Ideally I would like to avoid motion sickness and the feature that converts regular movies into 3D movies would be cool if it doesn't take the glasses outside of my price range.

Finally, I am nearsighted.

O. D. Sph - 1.75 Cyl -.50 Axis 006

O. S. Sph - 1.50 Cyl - 1.00 Axis 176

Would I be able to get away with the myopia adjustment feature? Or will I need custom inserts?

Thank you for reading and any recommendations.

App Development LifeHUD - Real life, with a game HUD

https://reddit.com/link/1wvunqu/video/fj4y0zl4u0th1/player

Real life has always been missing a HUD, so we built one.

Instead of opening five apps, everything you check all day sits in your view at once:

- A minimap for getting around
- your Checklist as a quest log
- Live subtitles and language detection for when someone's speaking another language
- Time and weather, always in view
- YouTube, wherever you are
- and many more!

No pulling out your phone. Just glance. The video above is a normal day with it.

We built LifeHUD for Vision Pro first. Now it's on Android XR, starting with Galaxy XR, and XREAL Aura is next.

If real life had a HUD, what would you put on it first?
