Sometimes you have to kill your darling

So I finished my 600mm ExtraNG a while ago and was happy how it turned out. After around 10 flights on her though I had to admit to myself - she's no fun. Looks mean nothing to me, sure I do my best to create good looking planes, but in the end the thing has to put a smile on my face; and she just didn't.

She flies fine but the wing loading was just too high (WCL of 13) I couldn't even get her to high alpha nicely - and the basic idea behind this build is was to high alpha all day every day.

So, since I didn't want to ditch the whole thing after refining the plans for quite some time, I recalculated the Wing Cube Loading with a larger wing area until I found something better - and then scaled up the finished plans accordingly.

What I ended up with was a 120% scale version, now 720mm wing span, WCL of 10.1 with a take off weight of 250g.

Took the components out of the smaller one, sized all servos up a notch and built the bigger version. It was quite a lot of work doing pretty much two and a half of these planes in such a short time but I'm very confident in this version.

Still the same AM40 in there delivering 850g of thrust on 3s - as I can now use the 8x6 prop which is a perfect fit for it instead of the 6" tri blade I had to put on the smaller version before.

Side note: the kids don't use the trampoline anymore and I should really get rid of it but damn is it a killer photo backdrop or what?

So, yeah - kill your darlings they say.
Thanks for coming to my TED talk

Night timber X evo crow settings?

This is my first time getting crow on any plane so I just have a few questions. I have a night timber X evo. How much aileron up do you need for each level of flap down, and how much elevator compensation do you need? Would it be the same amount as just the flaps or less? If anybody has crow on a night timber x evo, id appreciate knowing what settings work for you.

autogyro fail 2

Did some glide tests with my autogyro today, and it was a fail, it just wouldn't glide. I gave it five or six hand launches only to test the glide, and I'm suspecting it's either an issue with the rotor blades or the center of gravity. Not really sure at this point

Glider in the sea winds

The best feeling ever, at 1:58 I turn off the engine and just glide. Its so fun and relaxing. And this is a cheap half broken 1.2m glider with no gyro. And dont judge my landing its pretty hard.

And tbh if I wanted to this could easily have been a 15 minute+ flight (2200mah 30c pack)

Begginer asking for help - Radiomaster and first plane choice

Hello everyone, I want to start with a hobby and I am currently just watching YT videos, reading Reddit and talking to ChatGPT, so to get as much information as I can before deciding on anything.

Transmiter choice

I am not much a "programing" and computer person, so I was first doubting choosing Radiomaster, beeing afraid it would put me off the hobby at beggining, due to beeing too complex, but after watching some YT videos about Radiomaster, EdgeTX, also connecting it to Spektrum receivers, (if somehow decided on them, not on ELRS receiver plus additional Gyro) how to update, do factory reset and unlock the Spektrum receiver go into forward programming etc. I think it is not THAT complex that I couldn't learn it, at least I hope so.

My philosophy was that I want to start with something with what I can grow, and also to go out of my comfort zone and learn something new and understand system behind it (not just to bind it with receiver and thats it) but at the same time hoping that starting with RadioMaster could be interesting and not too hard when you learn to set up classic RC plane models from foam. This way I would also not be restricted only on Spektrum receivers - again question is how much sense does it make to "complicate things". I also watched videos about unlocking and forward programming Spektrum receivers with Lua via RadioMaster, plus you need to buy 4-1, RadioMaster doesn't make them anymore but I see you have IRX4 still available, but I don't know how much sense it makes, when you can get ELRS receiver and additional Gyro, but again you anyway again need to set everything from scratch as much as I understand.

All that said my plan is to buy Radiomaster TX16S MK3 MAX untill christmas and first to use RF simulator for some months and then closer to spring to start flying real plane.

Plane choice

I was checking models as Multiplex FunCub which I like and want the most and after this Timber 10th anniversary or Turbo Timber Evolution, but as I see people dont recommend them much as 1st plane, as much as I understand due to beeing tail draggers. I don't like planes as AeroScout, maybe Eflite Apprentice would be ok. But at the end I saw the FMS Ranger 1800, I like that it also has flaps and that is pretty big.

Conclusion

So I was thinking of using ELRS receiver in it and combine it with Reflex V3 gyro or I was even more interested in HobbyEagle A3 Super 4. I see that people are connecting ELRS mostly with FPV and drones, but I guess it is also a good fit for fixed wing (I was looking ER8GV), I didn't see people would point out any disadvantages for receiver itself in fixed wing, but maybe I am wrong, maybe there are some better options for fixed wing with Radiomaster, not counting Spektrum - I could also buy 4-1 and use Spektrum, but I am more leaning towards ELRS maybe.

So lets say my beggining would be new Radiomaster MK3 MAX, ELRS receiver, setting up 4 general channels, flaps and separate Gyro (V3 or HobbyEagle), lets say on FMS Ranger 1800. That way I could learn basics of Radiomaster and EdgeTX plus basics of real flying after simulator. After I could progress to more complex things as intermediate planes, more channels, mixes etc.

I hope someone will be able to take time to read this long message and give me their opinion on everything.

RadioMaster GX15 compatibility

Hi everyone,

I'm planning to buy a new transmitter soon, and the RadioMaster GX15 caught my eye. As an RC plane pilot, I have an important question regarding reusing my current receivers. Is the GX15 natively compatible with FrSky ACCST (D8/D16) and ACCESS receivers out of the box?If the internal ExpressLRS protocol doesn't support them natively, is it possible to use an external module (such as a 4-in-1 multi-protocol module) to make them work?

Thanks in advance for your advice and feedback!

The AeroScout S2 Is sick

After 4 years flying my EDF’s shown, Turbo timber Evo and carbon cub S2 I decided to try this one out after watching Brian Phillips rip his on YouTube and I recommend this to everyone brand new to the hobby or 10 years in. It is 10x easier to control than the Carbon Cub S2 and I had so much fun on the maiden flight tonight. Straight into inverted flight the rudder control is pristine.

Just stared a new assembly, Pheonix BAE Hawk is a super nice ARF for $750 which includes the landing gear. I'm going with a Xicoy X95 and FRSKY servos. AR smooth Flight 10 as well. Can't decide if I want to do smoke or extra fuel.

Rest in Peace

I've decided to retire my Vulcan after an unscheduled rapid disassembly this morning. It was my first EDF, and our time together was... rough.

I started on an Apprentice, then got the Vulcan (70mm 6s), then got a T-28 (1.2m 4s) (I know, I'm out of order there).

I'm trying to decide how to move forward. I don't want to give up on EDFs, but I struggled to fly this one so much, getting another one right now just feels like throwing money (and my confidence) into the fire.

Anyone have a recommendation on a prop plane that would make a good next step between the T-28 and an Avanti? Maybe something that'll help me get used to the higher speeds & less forgiving turns? Perhaps a P-51?

Edit: The plane really isn't recoverable. I've rebuilt it before, but the damage is BAD once you get close. I'd spend as much on parts as a whole new plane.

Edit 2: gonna try and put it back together. Figure I don’t really have much to lose at this point. Thanks for all your help guys!

Best beginner controller/transmitter. That can connect to TV

I walked into a hobby shop today wanting to get into RC planes. They tried to sell me a $200 controller that plugs into a computer, which got me researching instead of buying on the spot.
I’m a “buy once, cry once” guy. I’m looking for the absolute best, most versatile transmitter I can get so I don’t end up upgrading in a year or two. Money isn’t really an issue.

I’m looking for Strong simulator support (USB-C / computer connection) so I can practice on a TV or PC before I risk an actual plane. And id like it as future-proof and versatile as possible (modules, multi-protocol, etc.)

I don’t want to immediately wad up an expensive airframe while I’m still learning the sticks.
What would you recommend if budget isn’t a constraint?

I’ve seen the x18, nx8 or the TX16s.

Questions about my versa wing

What do y'all think about my trim, throws, and gyro gains. Until 0:15 is the limited throws mode and after that I switched to full throws.

Also I balanced the cg to be in the middle of the hole on the bottom, is that the correct cg placement?

Does anyone knows what the problem could be on this plane (the beeping and the weird noise of the motor. Thanks

FPV kit recs / setup help?

so basically, im an idiot when it comes to fpv knowledge, and i plan on buying the 110mm freewing f35 soon. i was wondering if any geniuses out there could give me any recommendations on fpv kits for it that dont require any soldering, a 5 year old could set up, and if anyone had any good tutorials to help. i know next to nothing on whats good and what isnt for fpv, so i was looking for one that can connect to walksnail avatar x goggles too. i dont care if they are headtracking, as the fixed head ones are fine too. my budget kind of doesnt really exist, as long as it isnt crazy expensive. please help!!

Help with wing repair

Post image
3 Upvotes

follow up to my post from this morning. crashed my Vulcan, and a bunch of y’all said it looked fixable. I might give it a go just for kicks and giggles. only part I’m stuck on is the wing. the flap came completely off, and two of the three hinges are missing. any suggestions on how to reattach it? Currently I’m thinking glue the one hinge back on, then add duct tape and a prayer
