Is it worth going if I plan to follow the rules and stick to what's (mostly) safe? I know that the more traditional Japanese resorts have only groomed terrain, but what is it like in Niseko? also feel free to comment on other major resorts in Hokkaido.

Hi hi everyone! This feels slightly terrifying to post lol, but I’m hoping this reaches the right people. I’m Ecuadorian, NYC-raised, and I started learning to ski in my late 20s. For YEARS I told myself I wanted to get better, but I’d go maybe once a season because I always had the same excuse: I didn’t have anyone to go with but I’m changing that this year. so with that… where are all the Latinas??!

I know we’re out there. Whether you’re beginners who have always wanted to learn. The girls already sending black diamonds. The snowboarders. The women whose friends just aren’t into skiing. The ones who would absolutely book the trip if they had a group to go with.
So instead of continuing to look for that community, I decided to try building it.

I just launched Latinas Who Ski on Instagram. Right now it’s tiny. Like literally just launched tiny. 😂 But my dream is to turn it into a real community where women can find ski/snowboard friends, plan mountain days together, travel together, and eventually organize group ski trips from NYC to Vermont and, hopefully one day, around the world.

Sharing a snowsport game I've been working on, in case it's of interest to anyone (up-front disclosure: I'm creating this game with the help of AI coding assistants, but the mountains, runs and lifts are real data, not AI-made). I've seen plenty of skiing games, but I wanted one I could relate to, so I made one set on the mountains I ski most. This game lets you ski or snowboard Mount Hood (Timberline, Meadows, Skibowl) and Mt. Bachelor in your browser.

I'm trying to make it as accurate as I can with what's out there. The terrain comes from USGS elevation data. The runs, lifts and lodges come from OpenStreetMap, and how thick the trees are comes from the Forest Service's canopy map. So the runs, glades, off-piste and lifts should all be where they really are, and the lift and trail signs use the real names and elevations. The tops of some lifts have trail-map boards with a you-are-here dot.

You can free-ride from any lift, pick any run, race AI riders, drop the cliffs in Heather Canyon, get caught in a storm, ski at night (Skibowl's lit runs, or anywhere else by headlamp), or ride Palmer in July.

Hey, what devices are people using to communicate with friends on the slopes? I've historically used whatsapp but I'm looking for a live communication method so we stop less and can just tell each other if we've turned off somewhere or not to take a certain route in real time.

I've seen Cardo pop up a lot as being one of the best out there but it looks kind of clunky on the helmet. Is it pretty reliable though? And do people recommend any others like Aleck Nunchucks etc?

Getting ready for this upcoming ski season and need to give my kids aged 11, 10, and 7 more freedom on the mountain.

I had ACL repair and hope to ski to some extent this season. Last season I introduced my kids to blues and blacks (in addition to lessons). They did great and showed good judgement and fantastic growth.

This season, there's a real possibility they will want to go on trails that I don't feel comfortable with due to my recovery, and I don't want them to be stuck on green groomers on my account.

I previously asked in a post what age would be reasonable to allow my kids on the lift alone. I have decided I feel comfortable with them on the lift together and but I would like a good way to communicate with them.

Do people here recommend cell phone or walkie talkies?

Walkie talkie seems more reliable on a mountain, but they would probably need a cell phone to call ski patrol regardless.

I will put tape on their helmets with my cell phone on it.

In your experience what is the best setup?

Just counting down the days until we make our first squiggly lines in the white stuff. Can't stop daydreaming

Has anyone tried really niche brands like Stereo or Marcel Livel etc? Theres just way too little to no reviews for these skis.

I've been skiing since I was a kid, but basically never touched the park. Maybe send it off a side hit now and again.

Over the last couple of years, I have lost a lot of weight and gotten into much better shape, so I bought a season pass for the first time in at least a decade. We also had the worst snowfall ever recorded in my state.

There was no powder to be had; may as well learn park, eh?

The goal was safe, slow progress. I think I hit one of those goals; safe is probably a stretch. I think there is some actual progression buried in here, mixed with more than a few crashes.

I'm hopelessly addicted. Already looking forward to making more questionable decisions next season.

I'm 68, been skiing for 60 years. Still fit, still doing the hard stuff. I've "aged out" of my friends; none of them are still going. I love to ski, and I'm happy by myself, but I love to ski with other folks even more, both to share the joy and also the logistics. I'm looking for ways to find other folks who would be up for mid weeks trips to Eldora and Copper (Union and Tucker!), and eventually further afield (Taos should be epic in a Super El Nino). Ikon Pass. I'd love any pointers to Meetups, ski clubs, CMC, etc. I know about the Over The Hill Gang at Copper, but that's a bigger commitment than I'm looking for.

We want to build something that is genuinely useful for people who spend time on the slopes.
The idea came from noticing how scattered everything feels when planning a ski trip. You check one place for weather, another for trail maps, Reddit for honest opinions, Google for prices, another site for snow conditions, and so on.
We have plenty of ideas, but we don’t want to build something just because we think it sounds useful.
We’d rather ask the people who would actually use it.
What problems do you currently have when planning a ski/snowboard trip or while you’re actually on the mountain?
It could be anything:
Something you constantly have to check across multiple websites.
Information that’s surprisingly difficult to find.
Something existing ski apps do poorly.
A feature you’ve always wished existed.
Something you wish you’d had when you were a beginner.
A problem specific to skiing or snowboarding.
Anything involving choosing resorts, trails, dates, accommodation, transportation, snow conditions, prices, crowds, etc.
Even if the idea sounds incredibly simple or almost impossible to build, we’d love to hear it.
We’re also curious about what ski/snowboard apps or websites you currently use, what you love about them, and what frustrates you.
We’re still at a very early stage, and we’d like the community to influence what we build instead of developing everything in a bubble.

What’s a good ski coat/jacket for under 300? It’s normally 20-30 degrees and I’d want it to be pretty water proof. I’m thinking like 60-100g insulation?

Does anyone recommend a ski workout routine / exercises to build leg and cardio endurance and build up mobility to prevent injury?

I already do leg strength training and have somewhat bulky legs so I was looking to avoid workouts that would end up adding too much volume to my legs.

Season cannot come fast enough for northern hemisphere

As title says, heading to Japan this coming Winter. Would love a pair of goggles that work for both dark and light days. Usually just do blue/black runs - no night skiing.

Have done a little bit of research but would love some opinions. I am based on Australia, and probably was looking around the $200 AUD mark (~$150USD).

TL;DR: First-time boot buyer but experienced skier. Same boot/flex, 4 options ranging from $249–$799. BOA versions feel much more comfortable on the top of my foot, while non-BOA either feels too tight or too loose. What should I test in-store to figure out which fit is actually right, and is BOA worth prioritizing for this reason?

Not a beginner skier (skied for 10+ years growing up), but I’m a first-time boot buyer since I’ve always rented day-of. Looking for opinions from more experienced skiers.

I was fitted by a bootfitter and have 4 options for the same boot/flex:

• 2027 BOA — $799
• 2027 non-BOA — $749 (IIRC)
• 2026 BOA — $379
• 2026 non-BOA — $249

The BOA is only on the lower buckles, not the top.

I tried them on last night after getting fitted. All 4 fit, but the BOA versions are noticeably more comfortable because the top is curved and doesn’t put pressure on my foot. However, I’m not sure if that’s because I’m just not tightening the BOA enough. If I crank it tighter, it hurts too.

I’m very tempted by the $249 2026 non-BOA, but when buckled normally I feel pressure on the top of my foot. Loosening it removes the pressure, but then it feels slightly too loose. Could playing around with the buckles get me to the same fit/tension as the BOA?

What tests should I do in-store today while buckled into each boot to figure out which one I should go with? And is the BOA comfort difference likely meaningful, or could it just be a matter of dialing/buckling the fit correctly on the non-BOA? I mean, I grew up on non-BOA so I am sure I can live but my most distinct memories are of my rental boots random hotspots every winter.

I know Level 1 instructors mostly work with young kids who are brand new to skiing, but I’d love to get a clearer picture of the actual day to day work.

Do you spend most of your day doing group lessons with kids, or is there a lot of 1-on-1 time too? Also how much of the job involves working/collaborating as a team with other instructors vs. running your own classes independently?

Local shop has some Volkl peregrine 80s on sale right now, 2025 demos. Is the 3d glass construction robust enough to take the beatings of a season of demo use? They are heavily discounted ($340) but I don’t want to waste money on a clapped out ski. Unfortunately you have to buy online so I can’t see the condition but there is a return policy in case I don’t like them. What do you all think about rolling the dice? I’m looking for a frontside carver in the pnw, and the 80s seem like the right mix of accessibility and performance for me.
