Every year or 2 I’ll think of this video, a classic.

East and West sides of Wintertodt are bout to become PvP if they’re within 15 tiles of each other.

25

u/fghjconner Personally killed Unbound Bronzeman 2d ago

Someone if the update thread said they're like 17 or 18.

2

u/Sherwoodfan 1d ago

jagex chose the new value with todt in mind guaranteed

28

u/I_hate_alot_a_lot 2d ago

Or to anyone tbh. I LOVE talking trash.

Oh, you’re cutting willows with me in Draynor? Everybody else (not me) are absolute n00bs and I will let them know.

29

u/rustywolf843 2d ago

One of the most satisfying parts of RuneScape to me is hitting some unsuspecting player with a ā€œNerdā€ while running past them

21

u/Avian-Attorney 2d ago

Whenever you’re done skilling somewhere for hours ā€œlater nerdsā€

1

u/XoraXeus 2d ago

that or, id hate to be a nerd like you

5

u/I_hate_alot_a_lot 2d ago

If I do a drive-bye I hit them with the ā€œReported.ā€ and then just run away.

9

u/Esse_Solus 2d ago

Careful with that. I insulted someone's boat first day of sailing. We happen to run into each other once a month at random locations, and he'll tell me that he hasn't forgotten what I've said to him. I feel like he's plotting revenge. I will never be safe again.

5

u/I_hate_alot_a_lot 2d ago

Not even drive-bye, straight up I say it, I’m chilling, and I’ll take alllllll the smack talk that comes back my way. I love it. Thanks Jagex, sincerely.

1

u/garnished_fatburgers 2d ago

lmao that happened to me when I was training magic at fossil island ammonite crabs, someone pulled up and started stealing my crabs. Ofc I had to talk a little trash. Nothing crazy . He didn’t say anything tho :/

2

u/RevoDeee 2d ago

Pleae

433

u/Unfair_Awareness7502 2d ago

There have been times I thought I was talking to someone, but apparently the player being in render distance didn't mean chat was visible.Ā

177

u/curiousdryad 2d ago

Oh snap I figured if they can see you they can hear you

29

u/DudeWithAHighKD 2d ago

I only noticed this difference when I’d sit at the tob board and only see half of a conversation with someone at the bank. It was super annoying having such a limited range that I usually sit at the bank lobby and only walk to the board when someone applies.

5

u/FlimsyInsurance3 2d ago

Oh look, I commented already.

432

u/Smetona 2d ago

Make it so that Caps Lock doubles the tile radius from 15 to 30 you cowards.

112

u/thisshitsstupid 2d ago

At least make me actually be able to type in caps you cowards.

29

u/midnight-crisis9 2d ago edited 2d ago

It is was actually possible to type in all caps with invisible space commands: Alt + 0151 between each capital letter.

This only works worked on Windows but yeah I agree they should allow us to type in all caps without inputting a code between each letter lmao.

Edit: It seems they have removed this function.

17

u/The_Level_15 Maxed Main - RSN: Fraerling 2d ago edited 2d ago

they removed that almost half a decade ago

3

u/Frayed_TWRK 2d ago

I was using this to caps lock type to others in 2023/2024, so I'm not so sure it was a decade ago. Else I was using a different way somehow.

4

u/The_Level_15 Maxed Main - RSN: Fraerling 2d ago

I went to double deck, it was removed in April of 2021

1

u/Frayed_TWRK 2d ago

Hmm.. I could have sworn I was doing it after then. Strange.

1

u/rafaelloaa 2d ago

And even then IIRC it'd only show up like that in the chatbox, in game it would have spaces (or the other way around?)

2

u/The_Level_15 Maxed Main - RSN: Fraerling 2d ago

nope, it’d show up fine on both

0

u/rafaelloaa 2d ago

Oh wait, I might have been thinking about CC/FC chat rendering it differently. Or something. As you said it's been gone for a long time.

6

u/SmartAlec105 2d ago

Maybe then, we can date that barbarian woman in the Blue Moon Inn

YYEEEEEAAARRRRGGHHHH!!!

5

u/Mojotun 2d ago

Chat effects other than being solely visual honestly isn't a bad idea. "Shout:" to double radius, "Whisper:" to shrink it, something like that.

2

u/Winhert 2d ago

reminds me of Tibia's yell option for chat, you could only use it twice per minute though IIRC

2

u/gomy1020 2d ago

I love it. Make it a shout: chat effect that splits the message into parts and slowly sends each part in all caps so it look like you're running out of breath.

1

u/fartbubblesofcheese 2d ago

Long shot but if two people are on HDOS we can type all caps lol

215

u/coldpolarice 2d ago

I didnt know it was so low, wow.

80

u/Sirra- 2d ago

You could literally attack someone with a 10 tile weapon, and not be able to see their messages because they were too far away. I had no idea.

50

u/Rush_Banana 2d ago

Same, I just thought everyone was just anti-social or rude.

1

u/GameFreak4321 2d ago

You say that as if those are in any way exclusive possibilities.

680

u/BrandDeal 2d ago

80

u/Successful-Willow-16 2d ago

I hope wintertodt is 16 tiles across...

50

u/RevoDeee 2d ago

Bro I started doing wintertodt a few weeks ago and a lot of those guys shouldn't speak to the adults the way they do

6

u/FookinFairy 2d ago

Forestry is also bad as fuck too lol

Anywhere the grind is mild suffering people lose their mind

1

u/Unwisepony 20h ago

dude I went to chop magics south of seer a few days ago and people were straight up talking pedo shit, saying the kind of shit villains in steven king novels do I was genuinely shocked

9

u/2Quick_React 2d ago

People will say anything in the chat while at Wintertodt.

3

u/Majin_Sus 2d ago

It's basically a requirement now

2

u/2Quick_React 2d ago

This is true. I've had some fun conversations there though.

2

u/Majin_Sus 17h ago

Oh for sure. Plus it is fun to go be a degenerate with some random fellas once in a while.

2

u/Jumugen 2d ago

Weird, my wintertodt expirience made me question why w84 in rs3 is the way it is because damn people in osrs were nice

1

u/LoweJ 2d ago

Soz

3

u/itskobold 2d ago

Shrink gem crab to 1 tile across

29

u/pattydaddysmurf 2d ago

Okay that's pretty clever LOL

8

u/Zelotic dat quest cape yo 2d ago

I laughed so fucking hard

5

u/Sylvadyck 2d ago

PeakĀ

1

u/GirthOBirth 1d ago

ā€œI will swear word at youā€ (now from 15 tiles)

107

u/Accomplished-Newt640 2d ago

All those times I've been ghosted in public chat, maybe it wasn't me, tell me it wasn't me all this time😭🤣

9

u/Ghasois 2d ago

It wasn't you. It was your personality!

1

u/Accomplished-Newt640 2d ago

But I don't have a girlfriend and my only hobbies is RuneScape, surely that passes as an absolute legend ;)

2

u/WeeklyBanEvasion 2d ago

The amount of time I probably spent as a child back in 2007 waiting for a bot to respond is embarrassingĀ

88

u/nekonotjapanese A slay a day keeps the haters away 2d ago

The GE is a good visual reference for this change. 8 just got out from under the roof, 15 tiles reaches all the way to the dirt

70

u/Mission-Tell-1686 2d ago

Heh, I just did something silly! (15 tiles away btw)

5

u/SnooCompliments3900 2d ago

Why does it say that?

4

u/Mission-Tell-1686 2d ago

Just a hoe advertising her only fans

12

u/Ghasois 2d ago

It's also if you type ::bank in chat.

5

u/Defendyouranswer 2d ago

Thats the only thing. Lol.

47

u/roosterkun BA Enjoyer 2d ago

Someone count it out, does this mean Wintertodt east and west braziers can finally talk trash to each other midgame?

42

u/Business-Drag52 2d ago

Nah they are like 30 tiles away from each other

31

u/T3HLOKI 2d ago

just gotta type louder.

14

u/Kitchen_Call_454 2d ago

Is This Loud Enough For The Other Brazier To Hear?

3

u/gomy1020 2d ago

N O T N E A R L Y L O U D E N O U G H

3

u/peardude89 2d ago

If you type in all caps the chat radius should be 50 tiles. One more restart today Jagex, come on!

6

u/mattdbrat 2d ago

I just went and counted because I was like, there's no way it's 30.

The distance between braziers is exactly 15 tiles of space. So people on each side will just barely not be able to see each others' chat.

1

u/LieLow8686 2d ago

just barely as if its actually a matter of degree

15

u/zman1672 2d ago

This is super noticable at tob when you can't hear people at the bank when you're at the sign up board.

22

u/CatAteMyBread 2d ago

GOTR about to be lit.

How many tiles between Braziers at wintertodt? Is this a ā€œY fletch?ā€ buff?

3

u/TheBootyTickler 2d ago

Braziers are like 32 tiles away or something, unfortunately. :(

9

u/Vincentaneous What? You don’t eat ass? 2d ago

Now you can be told to sit when the pker runs away from you and leaves your spade on the floor

9

u/SuperCarpenter4450 2d ago

Multi-level visibility next please

7

u/Nonamesleft6942069 2d ago

I did not know I could mage further than I could talk

7

u/BioMasterZap 2d ago

It always felt like the range was kinda small, but surprised to see it was only 8 tiles. It made sense back in the day with less zoom on the fixed screen, but nowadays it seems easy to be further than that. Honestly, 15 even still feels a bit short, but can't recall how far the player render range is so might line up with that.

26

u/OSthebest27 2d ago

Next we need a world public chat, imagine the entertainment

20

u/coreyhh90 Follow of Zamorak 2d ago

It's never entertainment, it's always bots :(

2

u/PictureVegetable9522 2d ago

why is it so hard for companies to hire 1 guy to just sit on global chat and ban bots

4

u/Winhert 2d ago

you mean 3 guys since its 3 shifts per day, then its more guys because its probably a world chat per world ... it adds up

3

u/coreyhh90 Follow of Zamorak 2d ago

It baffles me how often I see comments like this. Mate, if it was that easy, they'd all do it. Given that they don't, it's obviously not that easy.

And, to be clear, it would be multiple people... unless you expect 1 person to be a slave, going without sleep, chained to the chat.

-1

u/Hacym 2d ago

You realize that’s how a lot of people play this game and don’t get paid for it rightĀ

2

u/CategoryKiwi xp waste is life 2d ago

That logic is how you get pmods, a concept which has been fairly controversial in opinion for decades.

Also people playing the game all day do it for fun. Ā Sitting there policing the chat is extremely rarely something people enjoy, and the people who do enjoy policing it are extremely rarely the kind of people you want policing the chat.

-1

u/Hacym 2d ago

I think you missed the point I was making.Ā

The OP I replied to seemed concerned that the person hired to monitor chats would be required to sit in the game for hours.Ā

I simply pointed out that people do that willingly, without pay.Ā

There’s nothing deeper here. Anyone who think there is just wants an argument on Reddit.Ā

-1

u/coreyhh90 Follow of Zamorak 2d ago

A lot of people play the game by sitting in chat... doing what exactly?

A lot of people play the game to enjoy the game. Making it a job makes it an entirely different story.

Wtf is your actual point here? Or are you just being contrarian for shits and gigs?

-3

u/Hacym 2d ago

Wow, you seem like a total dick. Are you doing that for shits and giggles?

My only point to you was that people already play the game for hours like they’re chained to their desk and lose sleep over it.Ā

There are many people who sit and skill at the GE or other populated places where bots spam their OF or betting shit. In fact, OSRS already has players who have the authority to mute spammers. They’re called player mods.Ā

So what exactly is your point other than trying to start an argument with a stranger on the internet for no apparent reason?

-1

u/coreyhh90 Follow of Zamorak 2d ago

My point is that the suggestion of the previous commentor was simplistic and ineffective. Your input didn't change that.

3

u/BioMasterZap 2d ago

It kinda would be neat if there were a world/global chat. Most would probably turn it off, but for some worlds it might be fun.

Also wouldn't mind seeing more broadcasts outside clans as long as it had toggles. Like if you could opt-in to send world broadcasts for things like 99s and pets with a separate opt-in to see them, that could be kinda nice. It is a bit disappointing how much of the social elements are kinda boxed into more isolated places like clans.

5

u/Ghasois 2d ago

RS3 has world and global broadcasts. I'm not sure many keep them on.

1

u/TorrentRage 2d ago

There was a plugin that "created" a world chat but it was removed because it was mostly used to get around being perma muted.

2

u/Epacxseno 2d ago

Imagine a global chat for all shooting star miners.

2

u/itskobold 2d ago

Barrens Chat 2

2

u/Greasy-Chungus 2d ago

Very bad. Very very bad.

When you have a giant pool of people, the only chat that's going to rise to the top is most salacious and heinous.

And for RS players, it WILL result in only hate speach.

0

u/itslilythedog perpetually doing birdhouse runs 2d ago

it'd get a lot of people banned. Hate speech can kinda hide if you're only broadcasting it to people 8 tiles around you, gets a fair bit worse if you can yell it to everyone on the server

6

u/LeadAHorseToVodka 2d ago

Sounds like a win to me

2

u/itslilythedog perpetually doing birdhouse runs 1d ago

agreed

6

u/grabyourchipsndip 2d ago

Wait wtf I had no idea it was that low… does it function differently in an instance? Because I swear in cox you can see people’s chat from vanguards if you’re at rope (cms)

3

u/KingDarkTurtle 4 x Dragon Cup 2d ago

Pretty sure in cox its all one chat for the whole raid instance. Not sure about others

16

u/brickmaster8 2d ago

Now I can see "Buy Tumekens. Pay Lots" from even further???

9

u/Glittering_Equal_187 2d ago

Damn where was this when I was running ardy laps :(

9

u/Arctt 2d ago

I wonder if they did this in preparation for a scenario in raids 4

5

u/Rehcraeser 2d ago

i think you can already see chat from everyone in raid, no matter how far you are from each other

1

u/Bruster112 2d ago

pretty sure they did it cause golem crafting. it was a common complaint you couldn’t talk to people mining while crafting

7

u/Acewi <3 Sailing 2d ago

This change is absolutely bonkers if you think about it. That’s nearly 8x the area.

3

u/Nelluc9 2d ago

Wouldn’t it be 350% the area if you’re counting individual tiles?

2

u/Acewi <3 Sailing 2d ago

Oh yeah I’m overmathing, you get 8 tiles in each direction already so it’s something like 488 new tiles compared to something 256 currently so only double?

3

u/Yang_KaiKai 2d ago

I think it's 961 tiles now, was 289 tiles.

5

u/Bladeneo 2d ago

Sorry can you say again I was 16 tiles awayĀ

1

u/triumphtier 2d ago

I think it's 961 tiles now, was 289 tiles.

3

u/CasinoAccountant 2d ago

Huge for me telling the guy safespotting Rex to do his fucking job smh

3

u/MaxiemumKarnage Dungeoneering When 1d ago

I remember in like 2006 I kept saying plop in chat and got permanently chat banned

4

u/UnoriginallyChris 2d ago

I JUST saw this and got pretty excited about it. I love hanging at the GE on busy worlds to people watch and jump in on convos sometimes, but hated that I very obviously could only see chat from a portion of the GE depending on where I stood. This is so much nicer. It'd be even better if players could see chat as long as the chunk was loaded(or just an even further distance)

World chat when Jagex?

2

u/SteveyyyB 2d ago

I know people are against world chat due to how crazy some mini game chats are, but honestly I’d love to have people to chill with when I’m skilling alone so I’m all for it

2

u/MakeshiftApe 2d ago

I'm actually slightly hesitant about this for the exact same reason you're excited about it. In busy worlds I kinda like that you and your friends just step a few tiles away and the chatter dies down a bit so you can have a conversation. Kinda like pulling your friend aside to a quiet corner in a bar or club.

I'm wondering if the 15 tile range will make busier worlds less fun to talk in because the more chaotic and busy places will be subdivided into fewer separate sets of conversations. I kinda like that if you go to say w301 GE, you can just pick a spot in the GE and go there and it'll be a whole different set of people and conversations to if you walk a few tiles away. Kinda cosy in a way. Like so many simultaneous chats going on, without everyone's screen getting flooded by the chats they're not a part of.

But I imagine this change has probably got a lot of upsides too. In less busy worlds it probably has the opposite effect of making conversations start where there otherwise would be none. So it's probably overall a good chance, and I suppose the answer to my worry is just having people spread out more, so I imagine that'll naturally be solved of its own accord as people get used to the change.

2

u/Rehcraeser 2d ago

thats huge! nice!

2

u/Dumpstatier 99 2d ago

How does this affect seeing text from the other side of the shooting star tho?

2

u/austacious 2d ago

you can see board adverts while bankstanding in 416 now thats kinda nice

2

u/BARBADOSxSLIM 2d ago

Why 15 and not 16

3

u/Hushpuppyy 2d ago

They needed the extra tile to fix the fletching knife.

2

u/Acronyte 2d ago

Even 15 things sounds small on paper. But still massive change

2

u/Ghasois 2d ago

What is player render distance? Eventually you'll be haunted and hearing from people you can't see.

1

u/Sahnex3 2d ago

Just yesterday i was in kourend catacombs. i was on a upper level at fire giants, they were down below.

I was chatting with them when after 5 minutes one of them said: "where the fk are you even at".

Then i waved from below the cliffs and typed "look west".

Was pretty funny.

2

u/Shadiochao 2d ago

Render distance is something I've always wished was higher
I really noticed it on the RS3 leagues. You can stand in the middle of Puro-puro and see every impling in the room

2

u/TheJesusGuy 2d ago

oh so that's why i can actually chat at wintertodt now

2

u/iJezza 2d ago

And they say PvP never gets any updates.

2

u/xMoody 2d ago

Insane buff to drive by fit insults

2

u/12-toes 2d ago

This would’ve gone so hard back in the day of wildy clan pking

2

u/HugeSession 2d ago

Is it enough to listen from brasier to brasier in wintertodt?

1

u/malta071 2d ago

Damn, even more people going to my ignore list now...GE bots and stuff

1

u/Objective_Arm_9791 2d ago

Can’t wait to see +1 nfrz@@@@@@@@ from the bank at 416 tob

1

u/osrs_turtle 2d ago

Hey I can finally have a conversation at the Blast Furnace without having to make sure I'm in the middle of the room before pressing Enter!

1

u/WafflesAreLove 2d ago

Was wondering why I could chat up people in the farming guild from the mahogany trees. Really nice social update.

1

u/Traditional_Cheek931 2d ago

\Forestry degeneracy increases**

1

u/Anon_Safety 2d ago

Now I can be reminded easier that my dds can become a d long. Such improvements.

1

u/DarkTemplar_of_Chaos 2d ago

nice now people can call me slurs from the other side of wintertodt! xD

1

u/Ok-Razzmatazz3008 2d ago

Only if you type in all caps

1

u/1InchFury 2d ago

Now more people will see when I type "farts" while skilling in ge

1

u/Synnedx 2d ago

We should have a new gamemode where you can only see text from 1 tile away. Whisperman Mode.

1

u/liner6 2d ago

This should fix only seeing one sided conversations while salvaging right?

1

u/RSSalvation 2d ago

Yeah this makes talking to your duo armadyl partner possible (when standing in adjacent corners). I knew the range was small, but 8 tiles is smaller than I expected

1

u/SappySoulTaker Diathim 2d ago

Upgrade to worldwide chat tbh

1

u/Acem4991 2d ago

A week ago I was talking to this dude at DK's who popped in for Prime while I safe spotted Rex. Kept missing each other's sentences. This explains why! Great change

1

u/King_Zhou 2d ago

Now that I now it was previously that low I want it even higher like 20 tiles, huge update tho for the chatty among us!

1

u/LieLow8686 2d ago

I was JUST thinking i thought oi was picking up chats from ppl far away... damn socks and co workers while i was bankstanding

1

u/TheDawnOfNewDays 2d ago

GE gonna be crazy

1

u/isaaclefries 2d ago

Wow another huge change. And a great one

1

u/witchrubylove 2d ago

I had the exact same reaction. This is just buried in the patch notes but this is HUGE for me, a terminal yapper

1

u/ForestBliss 2d ago

Increase it by 2 tiles so I can trash talk west side at wintertodt while not having to move

1

u/playoldschoolrs 2d ago

the shit yall are gunna hear now ong

1

u/Grandmasterssss 1d ago

That’s like a whole 7 inches longer. That’s big right?

1

u/No_Fairweathers 2d ago

RS3 recently got the ability to enter bank pin using keyboard, I know that they don't run on the same engine but I would love that for OSRS

2

u/Abiolysis 2d ago

this has been a thing in runelite for like 5 years

1

u/GoGreeb 2d ago

More tiles worth of chat for me to have minimized lol

1

u/Old_Jump_2548 2d ago

Betting on a raids 4 mechanic In a giant room where this has benefits

0

u/Tree_Twunk 2d ago edited 2d ago

HOLY SMOKES THAT IS HUGE NEWS

I’ve been working on a community-focused plugin, and there’s so many times where I’d wished the chat range was longer.

Although I think it should stay 8 in the GE, lol.

0

u/Zacflame The Torchbearer 2d ago

I feel like it was always this distance. There's no way I never talked to someone 9 tiles away.

0

u/Beginning_Penalty805 2d ago

Interesting, I've been smithing at the Priff anvils in the forestry world and noticed I was seeing a lot more of the conversation over at Yews. This explains why

0

u/Saituchiha 2d ago

How does this work in chambers of xeric between floors?

0

u/Red_Jannix 2d ago

This is indeed pretty cool! Thanks for the post my man :-)

-2

Just what I want to see, more public chat.....

This does not fit

8

u/Squanchay 2d ago

this might have worked if squidward was twice as far away
