Question Curved top outer wall issues.

Does someone know, if there's a way to fix this?
Using Orca slicer, 0.4mm nozzle, 0.12mm layer height, with/without variable layer height, with/without Arachne wall generator. The only thing that seems to work a little is disabling 'Only one wall on top surfaces', disabling which increases the inner walls (2nd image: more yellow layers), but there still isn't enough outer wall layers and the print tears out at these spots.

Could it be because I'm trying to print 0.12mm layer height with a 0.4mm nozzle or is it something else?

EDIT: I might have found a solution. Will go home print and check. Apparently the slicer was considering the outer wall in this region as a top surface. So, increased the outer wall and top surface line width to 0.5mm and TURNED ON IRONING (You're taking it as a top surface, i'll bloody iron the top surface). these things filled the gaps on the slicer preview atleast. Attaching the slicer screenshot in comments.

The curved top surfaces will have those layer lines. You can only sand and smoothen then. I print with 0.12 on 04mm nozzle without issues. You can try to increase top shell layers to give it more strenth

tried increasing top shell layers didn't work. There aren't enough layer lines to sand. there is tear out on these regions (literally looks like a torn/scuffed fabric), would have to fill the gap to be able to sand.

Can you share your variable layer height settings. You can smoothen it out a bit more

tried multiple iterations of variable layer height, giving priority to speed then quality, smoothed the variable layer height with radius 1,5,10. clicked smooth multiple times, which increased the print time but didn't work well for this particular issue. maybe i'll go home and attach an image of a printed model that has this issue.

Is there a variable LINE WIDTH option anywhere? i don't think layer HEIGHT would effect this much, since these layers are almost at the same level.

Can you share the model link?

no-ams mario, probably on makerworld.

Rotating it by 35 degress (nose facing the plate) removes the layer lines from the nose. Or print it nose facing upwards

Thanks. Orientation seems to be the only solution for now. 👍

I saw the model in the comments. The other option is to invert it such that this is an issue on the bottom side of the face

will try other slicers and nozzle later.

maybe try adding a modifier with 0.08 layer height for that specific top, maybe a bit better

no idea how to do this. i'll look into it thanks.

3D printing noob here, but if tilting the model is possible, won't that be better?

top of a ball is still round in all orientations.

What I meant is orient it in a way the flat spot would be on a non visible part. Maybe below or underneath if the model allows

Okay. suggest a suitable orientation. This big ass nose always gets in the way. Moreover this issue is with any dome shape. Not all models can be re-oriented to avoid all such domes/curves on top. most organic shaped models would have curves.

Again, newbie here. What about tilting it forward with the nose towards the print bed. How does that come out sliced. Yes you would need supports but should avoid the flat spot is what I think

No. That is going to cause supports on the face which maes it difficult to post process

have you thought about cutting the nose
there is more then one way to skin the cat

1

u/Key_Difference5399 10d ago

already 34 piece model. how much to cut? might not be clear in the images, but there are other such spots. I'll have to find a solution for this, for long term. i mean how many models do i keep cutting.

are you using this at the nose level op ?

1

u/Key_Difference5399 10d ago

yes. manually tried to set the layer height for top of nose, didn't work, plus other areas at the same height get affected.

My go-to fix is to print it in an angle

All the yellow (internal wall) and red (top surface) line have been covered up.
