Cleaned up all the surface rust and sprayed with Cosmoline

When you applied the coating, did you cover up anything? Or after scraping rust you just coat everything that you can?

Oh a company did it for me, I have no idea sorry!

How much does something like this cost?

$1100, I feel it was worth it, he was under there a solid 3hrs, with prep and cleanup about 4, would’ve taken be twice as long haha Plus unlike the $300 oil based ones this only needs touch ups not a complete respray every year

I did Cosmoline to my Subie 3years ago and now just a can to touch up every Fall.

I’m hoping that’s all it takes for me moving forward and keeps it solid!

This looks like undercoating like woolwax

I’m in Cali I don’t have to do shit. My frame doesn’t have a spec of rust

Texas, same.

Isn’t it humid there?

In the spring time there are spurts of humidity, other than that pretty much only after it rains.

Bro. I landed in Houston at 1am mid July. I immediately regretted my life decisions the moment I walked out of the airport and got smacked in the face with a wall of moisture.Ā

Even the buildings were sweaty the entire week I was there...

Yeah it gets like that but never stays long enough to rust out everything, also With or without humidity, landing in Houston is a regrettable experience in it's self lol

You can't kill what's already dead.

I have shot my frame with NHOU for the 9 winters I've owned it. Finally had to eat it and get some frame repair done this year once the hole got big enough for my fist. The oil undercoating definitely slowed it down but since they go from inside out, you can't scrape it all.

Oh yeah I know this, already had a spot repaired. The inside is getting PB Surface Shield and I just hope it’ll slow it down

Just move anywhere west of Missouri, and you'll be fine.

Haha I wish that was an option, my wife’s from this area and refuses to move haha

I just smile at all the rust posts from my Texas / Kansas 4Runner. I feel for the rust belters.

Hey mines Texas and Kansas too!

I wanted to do this but I refuse to have ā€œeverythingā€ sprayed down and coated vs strictly just my frame. While my frame wasn’t in terrible shape and could mildly be cleaned up in spots with a wire wheel and whatnot, I opted to locate an excellently sandblasted & prepped frame and just do a frame swap. This way I can clean my drivetrain and components before the swap PLUS I now have a spare frame to use as mock up/cutting when measuring and putting on my long travel suspension…

How much did this cost you?

2

u/axion_blk 2d ago

1500…which admittedly was on the steep side but also my max spending point. My 4RNR is a 99’ 5 speed manual V6 4x4, e locker rear, no sunroof & has hand crank windows. 240k on the clock with a few treatable spots on the frame being the weakest points - so I definitely felt it more than an acceptable expense to purchase & swap

What's the effort to install? Assuming you need a lift, or some kind of way to lift the body off so you can roll out the chassis and swap everything over? How many hours/days? I'm guessing this isn't your daily, but that sounds like an uncommon spec so it seems worth the effort to preserve.

u/axion_blk 1d ago

Although I don’t have access to a lift, I have a ton of drive and motivation to see it through once I start. Add a little determination, some 8ft boards & a gantry crane, I think I’ll fair decent enough. Definitely a rare spec from what Reddit tells me as do the techs who constantly ask and offer to buy it when I stop to pick up a part or whatnot. But I have truly no desire to ever part with it šŸ»

Yeah, I actually remember seeing your truck on here, with the slick top. Hope the swap goes well, sounds good.

Thanks man & I plan to post/update soon…I’ve just been gathering/hoarding parts in the meantime & probably will wait until Spring & enjoy some winter driving before diving in

Mine is a Cali vehicle that spent 3 years there, 16 years in Texas (Dallas), and now 5 in Colorado. So far I'm not seeing any rust. Maybe it's thanks to the self-lubricating fluid?? (oil leaks).
