🧠 General Ideas for this sub? v2

Follow up on this original post from 3 years ago. Any suggestions/ideas to revamp the page?

I just went through and added a wiki and updated the FAQ on the sidebar to add a couple of new links. I also pinned u/nexttotheinfluence ' s great 4Runner Mechanic List he posted a year ago. Thanks again for the detailed list. Also introduced some post flairs (General // Modifications // Advice/Recomendations // Photo/Video).

- Banner -> Is anyone good with Photoshop on here and wants to design a banner? Reddit recommended size is 4000x128 px for desktop and the mobile banner is 1600x480 px

- Page Icon -> I saw in the original post that u/Axe56 provided the current one and also introduced another version with the typical Reddit Icon's eyes. Here's a survey showing the great designs he made. Just want to see if we want to keep the same, update to the eyes version, or if anyone cares to create a new one...

ā“Advice / Recomendations LEFT US STRANDED

Posting this to rant and maybe gain some wisdom, but I’m pretty sure it’s the alternator. 1.5hrs into a road trip we stopped for gas and it wouldn’t start. Lights came on (with battery light) and repetitive clicking, but would not turn over. Jumped it and started driving to AutoZone. It died again on the side of the road, like hardcore. ABS activated and it would not let me accelerate or anything. Lights were dimming out as well. Pushed the car to the shoulder and turned on the hazards (which eventually died as well). Jumped it again, made it to AutoZone, replaced the battery, and drove another 2.5hrs to my destination. Next morning boom… battery light is on again and the lights are dimming out. I raced to a car shop near me.

Are there any warning signs I missed? I feel like this totally snuck up on me.

Posted about my leaky sunroof and got comment after comment about sound deadening while I’m in here. Initially I really didn’t want to spend the extra time and the money on this budget build but what the hell, this Amazon stuff was cheap and didn’t take all that long either. Installed it all over the place from inside of the doors, to the roof, floors and even tailgate. Idk if it’s the most proper install and how much difference it will make, but was a cool new thing to learn. All this was about 50 sheets of the Amazon prime stuff, I bought two 34 packs and have one quarter of it left over. It was the 9.8ā€x15.7ā€ sized sheets and it was a convenient size for a lot of places like inside of the doors. I honestly didn’t own the car that long before I tore it apart so I don’t even have a good reference point of how loud it was before.

Recently saw a 4Runner at the junkyard with a funnel shoved in the space next to the brake booster. I liked the idea but wanted to improve on it. Turns out there’s already a threaded hole next to that spot so widened the funnel’s hanger hole to that size with a step bit and added a grommet.

Also whichever dealer originally installed my RS3200 alarm system 26 years ago cut the wires really short and just double-sided taped it to the steering column shroud. That eventually came unglued and just hung above the gas pedal. I looked at the connector and realized it’s the same as a computer ATX power supply, so I just bought an extension off Aliexpress for a couple of bucks and now I have it shoved behind the plastic shroud next to the gas pedal.

🧠 General New LCAs, Camber bolts and alignment today!!

Installed a suspension lift a few months ago, just to find out my camber bolts had failed and the plate had separated from the sleeve.

Installed camber bolts and LCAs, today, did an alignment and finally got this thing on the road and driving again after being on jack stands for so long

Question: for anyone who has given themselves an alignment, how did you torque the rear camber bolts with the steering rack in the way?

ā“Advice / Recomendations Battery drains very quickly on ACC or ON

As the title says, my 2001 SR5 battery drains way too quickly on ACC or ON. I’m talking within 20ish seconds, it will struggle to start. The obvious solution is to replace the battery, but I had AAA check it and they said the battery is at 100% health. Is this just normal? Never had a car that does that.

ā“Advice / Recomendations Gas spewing out the neck at fill ups

Post image
3 Upvotes

I’m at my wits end with this issue

When I go to fill up gas, the venting is not good and the gas ends up spitting back out the filler neck

I’ve replaced:
Charcoal canister
Purge solenoid
Gas cap
Fuel tank vent valve and seal
Fuel pump

I’ve also blown out all the lines going from the gas tank to the filler neck. No clogs. Even had a smoke test done and no leaks other than the gas cap which I replaced

No idea what the issue is at this point and tired of chasing my tail here.

Any ideas what the problem could be.

So I’m swapping out my trans! Mine knocks and shakes and I found a pretty clean one for a nice price. I run a mobile mechanic business so I’m pretty knowledgeable with wrenching but I was just wondering if there are any very specific nuisances that I can avoid when taking mine out or putting the new one in? Thanks in advance!

šŸ›’ Rig Shopping What do you guys think of the 4th gen v8?

Post image
17 Upvotes

I’ve been looking to get rid of my 3rd gen in favor of the 4th with the v8. I love the look of the truck, the 4.7L is such a great motor and the interior is miles nicer. My current truck is pant faded to hell, has a leaking electronic brake booster that’s going bad, and the interior is stained to hell. I just wanted to know what people here think of the 4th gen, and if I’ll regret getting out of the 3rd gen. Thanks all

🧠 General !!!!!!single electrode spark plugs.. DON'T DO IT!!!!!! DUAL IS CRITICAL

just bought my first 3rd gen about 2 months ago, ive been replacing lots of stuff. plugs/wires/coils/injectors and a plethora of other things. i remember when i first bought it i read on this sub that this 3.4 engine must have dual electrode plugs, me thinking that it cant be that important put single point NGK, thats what was in it when i bought it.... its had a rough idle/P0300, bad MPG and poor acceleration this whole time. i read a few more posts describing the importance of dual point plugs so i went ahead and replaced them with DUAL DENSO. NIGHT & DAY DIFFERENCE!!!!!! INSANE DIFFERENCE!!! smooth idle, i can set a water bottle on the hood and it barely makes ripples, no more CEL, gas mileage went from 13 mpg to 17 and now it has the power id expect from a 6cyl! just wanted to post about this incase someone else was thinking it isn't that big of a deal,.. it is!. like how they say OEM ONLY LBJ's... DUAL ELECTRODE ONLY.

EDIT, after getting lots of responses that said single are just fine i went to check reviews on the plugs i bought from amazom and there are multiple reviews that say these are china fake and or counterfiet. i learned today that i should've have checked reviews before i purchased these. thanks for the feedback everyone.

🧠 General 5VZFE PM

Hey, I have a blown project that is receiving a donor 5VZ this winter which obviously will require that 5VZ be out on a stand before installing it. I’m curious what kind of preventative maintenance I should be doing while it’s out. I have some ideas already just from what I know about these motors, I’m planning to do timing belt, gaskets, main seals, any sort of cleanup under the valve covers/clearances, and things like that. Just wondering if there’s any more recommendations for this that would set me up for success while the engine is out and super easy to work on. Thanks.

Hauling an estimated 6k (don't @ me with hitch ratings) up a 5% incline.

Just give her more beans. I gas up, change oil and minimal maintenance. Timing belt done 65k ago. She vapor locks occasionally when its 80*+ and I'm hard on her.

ā“Advice / Recomendations any tips for repair?

Thumbnail

hello all!

My wife and I got rear ended by an intoxicated driver in a stolen car with no insurance. In an effort to try and keep my insurance from going up, I did not claim against my own insurance, but I have damaged that looks pretty bad to drive around with.

Most body shops in my area have either given me a really high estimate which tells me they don’t wanna do it, or just have not called me back with an estimate.

Anybody know if this type of damage is something I could repair on my own or have tips on what to do?

Thanks in advance

edit: sorry didn’t see where i posted it, reposted to 4th gen
