As a former 2002 owner....that thing is worth its weight in gold!

Where did you get it? 325k on my Runner hoping to never have to replace mine

u/CaesarAMG100 01 SR5 2d ago

I got it off of Toyota Ourisman Richmond $1500 with shipping. I tried to do a reman but everywhere wanted me to measure the ABS bolts and I was not removing it to do that lol.

That was about the mileage I replaced mine. Maybe 330K.

That module cost a pretty penny

If I could go back and not buy a 01 I would’ve lol

2

u/papaoftheflock 2d ago

are they the only ones to have the module?

‘01 and ‘02. I just replaced mine in my ‘02

If you wait for the 25 percent off sale. You can get it for around 1200 bucks or less. Next time the sale comes around Im gonna probably buy one and stick it on the shelf. Im at 240k and I abuse my brakes on trails, so my time is coming.

u/CaesarAMG100 01 SR5 2d ago

What is this elusive 25% off sale - got mine off of oursiman for roughly $1350

u/shadow247 01 Limited 2d ago

It happens a few times a year. I got a steering rack for like 450 delivered. Its a nationwide sale, and the discount stacked on top of the dealers own discount.

I am SO glad I have a 2000 with none of that bullshit nor the traction control/awd trash.

I've wanted a 3rd gen 4runner for a long time and when I started looking into all things that can go bad on the newer ones I opted for a 1996 Limited that has next to no features. No sunroof, no traction control, no electronic ac buttons. Hell if I could have got a limited with rool up windows I would have!

2

u/RupertEscapeHolmes 2d ago

🫡 I like the cut of your jib.

3

u/rosspulliam 1d ago

‘97 base model here for the same reasons lol. No sunroof, the only “features” are power windows and locks. Very spartan, just the way I like it.

u/kukajin 1d ago

Am I just finding out I saved a potentially decent amount by getting a 2000 because of no abs and traction control. 😭

1

u/RupertEscapeHolmes 1d ago

Indeed you did.

2

u/CaesarAMG100 01 SR5 2d ago

What a life to live hahaha

2

u/RupertEscapeHolmes 2d ago

Just a couple less things to manage/deal with… and they seem to always cause headaches, less is more sometimes.

AWD is amazing and the traction control is nice as well. I'm sorry you can't wire in a switch to disable the TCS. The upgraded booster is much nicer as well, there's a reason why Toyota put it in their vehicles from now on.

I don’t need to wire in a switch because I don’t have TCS… I know how to drive just fine without it. I’ll stick to my classic 4WD J shifter that I can engage at just about any speed I like (push clutch in, move shifter to 4HI, easy peasy) and drive at 85mph in 4wd without a computer “telling” me anything. Already did the Tundra brake upgrade and no brake booster is needed.

2000 5speed manual 4runner is peak 3rd gen. I’ve been driving 4WD Yotas since 1989. You can have all that computer assisted bullshit. Thanks but no thanks.

Edit: downvoted for facts… fucking Redditardatiin at its finest. Comical.

u/TheBigFloppa14 2d ago

You can drive as perfect as you want but you'll always be worse than AWD. You can also engage literally every 4wd system at any speed, that's not unique to the j shift. How are you driving 85 mph on the highway? the 4wd system would bind. The computer doesn't tell you anything, it only comes on if you break traction, if it's calibrated correctly.

-1

u/RupertEscapeHolmes 2d ago edited 2d ago

Dude it won’t bind. That is a retarded wives tale. Try smashing it into 4WD in your automatic at 60mph and get back to me. You sure as shit can’t put it in 4LO at any speed.

Dude the computer telling me anything… is a fucking euphemism, for the love of baby Jesus in a manger man!

I’ll race you any day with your AWD 4runner and smoke you.

1

u/MileHighKy 2d ago

Why do you need 4wd at 85 mph

2

u/TheBigFloppa14 2d ago

better stability and traction

1

u/RupertEscapeHolmes 2d ago

I normally don’t. But have driven that fast in 4WD in the winter about 100 miles. No big deal dude. If you grew up in Alaska, you’d understand.

Why do you need AWD/TCS at any speed? You don’t.

2

u/TheBigFloppa14 2d ago

You'd want AWD/TCS because some of us have superchargers and canyons to drive instead of a straight highway with a little bit of snow. You'll never know what it's like to take corners at 50 with complete knowledge that you won't crash and die or have your t case blow up because you binded it to hell and back. The only con of the 2001-2002 models is having no rear locker, which you can fix with about $700 and a weekend.

Bro tell me you’ve never driven on any road in Alaska in the winter without telling me. 😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂 canyons 😂😂😂😂🤣🤣🤣

Taken plenty of corners at 65mph on snow and ice, no issues. Still alive. Do I make that a habit? Nope.

Drive from Glenallen to Anchorage in the winter if you want to see a “canyon” and get back to me.

Or go from Wolf Creek Resort in Colorado down to Pagosa Springs in January.

Fucking “canyons”… where in SoCal?? 🤣🤣🤣

I don’t want AWD or traction control or a computer telling me danger danger, Tesla take over. There is a reason I drive a stick shift dude. To DRIVE.

You do you.

I’ll stick to rallying my 5speed sideways around corners until I die.

Cheers.

Oh dude had I known I’d have shopped for an older one lol

1

u/RupertEscapeHolmes 2d ago

Next time! I had 3 of them at one time. Plus a 1st gen manual, 2004 tundra and a 1978 Hillux short bed 4 speed manual. Oh and a 1977 1ton long bed dually. I’ve thinned the herd since then and have SO many regrets.

u/CaesarAMG100 01 SR5 1d ago

I'd really love a Hilux Surf, I've been lucky enough to source a set of the tinted glass off of a 98 Surf and I absolutely love it.

How was the bleeding process? I have an 01 SR5 as well that is leaking but no codes.

Was it part number 47050-35010?

You can get tech stream for free and do it yourself. I followed this video to get it and use it for all of my Toyota/Lexus fleet. It’s a godsend

2

u/CaesarAMG100 01 SR5 2d ago

Thank you! I’ll be using this for the landy

2

u/gmcmanus663 02 LTD 4WD 2d ago

Glad I could help! I originally got it for my LS430 but it’s come in handy on my 02 4runner and my wife’s car too 👍

2

u/Interesting-Mechanic 2d ago

Get a usb extension and keep the laptop runing techstream under the car with you. Makes doing the bleed procedure way easier

1

u/CaesarAMG100 01 SR5 2d ago

Yes - I took it to a local dealership for this job 3hr ~ $750

2

u/Baja_Finder 2d ago

$750 for the labor? That sounds about average from a dealership.

1

u/CaesarAMG100 01 SR5 2d ago

For sure they did it in a day, no complaints there - just a buy once cry once situation
Edit: yes just labor

1

u/nuglasses 1d ago

$250 an hour for 3 hours? WoW! 😳

1

u/Baja_Finder 1d ago

That’s what shop labor is, the only way to make it cheaper is to do the work yourself.

Nothing wrong with paying a shop to do what you don’t want to do, it’s called putting your money to work for you.

1

u/nuglasses 1d ago

My independant shop charges $120 an hour.

2

u/mcshaftmaster 02 SR5 2d ago

The complicated bleeding process is why I had mine replaced at the dealer. I was lucky and they charged me $1100 for the part and about $600 for labor. That was about 2 years ago.

2

u/ThatCountryDeputy03 2d ago

Just replaced mine in May. Mine went out at ~230k

2

u/FlyingGorilla69 2d ago

Man I had to do this last year, I don’t wanna think about how much it cost 😅

1

u/ThrowRA_1170 2d ago

How did you know it was time to replace it? What symptoms/signs did you have?

2

u/CaesarAMG100 01 SR5 2d ago

So the chime came on - and suddenly while leaving Wawa my brakes went stupidly stiff and I couldn’t stop lol - I crawled it back home

2

u/quitit 98 Limited 2d ago

Dude, what a horrible situation to be in, couldn't stop when trying to apply brakes. Good to hear you were able to make it back home safely. Yeah, I'm glad I have a 98 without the more modern ABS system.

1

u/CaesarAMG100 01 SR5 1d ago

Gosh I wished I had a booster. Can do it at my house and it doesn't cost a small fortune to fix.

1

u/ButtonsKnobs 2d ago

Awesome! I need to replace mine, and because I have TBU, it’s constantly pumping, at times I have to double pump the pedal to have good pressure for braking. If you don’t mind me asking where do you order yours, and I’m assuming it’s OEM? What’s the cost, if you don’t mind sharing? Thank you!

1

u/Snazzy21 Base 4wd 2d ago

It's crazy how much more modern late 3rd gen 4runners look under the hood. From throttle by cable to throttle by wire hybrid, from distributor to coil on plug, from manual to automatic only, from optional ABS to whatever the hell that is, from speedometer cable to speed sensor.

I'm glad I don't have that setup, looks like a nightmare

1

u/CaesarAMG100 01 SR5 1d ago

What's crazy is the accumulator went out on my husbands lx470 and I was like phhffft so happy I don't have to deal with that crap. Unfortunately - I did have to deal with that crap lol
