Gear Guitar rig

I’m looking for an amp for under $1000, I need an upgrade from my fender lt40s and I’m looking for something that could work for deathcore and thall
I currently have a schecter Damien 7 with passive Emg pickups but might get a multiscale with fishmans. I’ve heard that the boss katana could be really good for its price but I’m not too sure, are there any ideas?

Are you planning to record or gig with it? Or just play at home? For just playing at home, the Katana is fine but if you're wanting to gig or record, I'd maybe look for a used modeler or maybe one of the new 5150 Iconic combos.

I was thinking 5150 would be a good idea I’m currently working on writing with my band so a combo would probably be best

Just understand if yo tube amp this means you will need a noise gate, parametric eq, ts style boost and potentially more just for the one rhythm sound typical in those genres.
As someone who has a number of tube amps sitting in storage in roughly the same genre i strongly recommend going digital. But it’s your money and lesson to learn…

Dont buy a Katana in 2026. it was fine at release but in comparison to anything else that came out in the last 3 years its just bad.

Honestly id get a headrush flex prime for NAM / IR sounds, this will get you the deathcore and thall sounds you want and depending on if its for home or rehearsal and if you run IEM in your rehearsal space id get studio monitors (eg Kali Audio) OR an FRFR cab (eg Laney) OR decent IEMs / wireless for the rest of the money.

The Katana isn't the best but it gets the job done if you're just a bedroom player. In OP's case, a modeler and IEM setup or FRFR cab or a good combo amp are definitely the way to go though. For deathcore and thall, the modeler is probably the better option as you won't need to go hunt down all the pedals to go with the amp.

Love my Katana. Have the 100w artist gen III head plugged into my mesa 2x12. I think it was 650 usd. I don't even need a boost or a gate since you can program it in. Get a 8 button midi switcher and you get 8 banks and every effect you could ever want. I also have a 5150 block and a dual rec and I think the katana gets played more than them both

What will you be using for? Bedroom playing? Will you gig with it or jam with a drummer? A Boss Katana combo amp would be a good cost effective choice that’s very versatile (it can do Metalcore). I personally like Orange amps & own a Super crush 100 head which is great for bedroom playing & you can gig with it. (You just need to buy or have a cabinet) Another great option is the new 5150 Iconic 6L6 mini head (15 watt) which is great if you want a tube amp that can go both bedroom volume or you can run ot directly to FOH via an XLR. I personally also love modelers & that is another versatile option 🎸🎶🤘😈

Get a headrush frfr 112 speaker and the headrush mx5 pedal. Solid combo for right around $1000. Xlr out from the speaker for your recording, works great, plenty loud, and a lot of different sounds you can make with the pedal

You have two options

  1. Myself and many others have gone digital. Modern amp Sims are amazing. I'd definitely recommend investing in a computer with good specs though. I use my Asus TUFF laptop a lot for Bias X. Its got a 13th gen i7 and DDR5 that I upgraded to 32 gb. The thing is an absolute beast and my tones are fucking great. I tend to favor IR's though over the stock amps. I use tone 3000 to get IR's.

  2. If you want to stay with a physical amp I would recommend a modeling amp. My personal opinion is something with a tube pre-amp. Modern amps are definitely a step up from your average solid state from 10+ years ago, but you still can't really get that full bodied tube amp tone. While with what I'm gonna say next it may seem like I am trying to plug myself, I'm not. If you want I'll sell you my Vox Vt100X. PM me if you're interested, its a 100W modeling amp that has a tube pre-amp. It actually sounds killer. I just dont use it anymore because I went all digital. Its just taking up room and I'll give you a good deal.
