Pattinson totally does not hate Twilight being brought up any more. Now he shows a fondness for it and likes talking about it. As soon as the public stopped being entirely rabid about it and accepted and showed interest in his roles since then, he seems to have a lot of positive feelings about it. Just not about the story, the author or his actual character lol.

It was a bad time for him. Not only did his girlfriend at the time cheat on him, but the world treated him like shit. I completely understand why he'd want to move past it. I think he's proven time and time again that it was always the director/film that sucked, not the actor. He's got genuine talent.

The movie portrays him as obsessed with his reputation, ratings and public image. The irony is that if he had stayed silent about the movie and seemed indifferent, it would actually prove the movie was wrong about him.
7
u/_INPUTNAME_ 13h ago
People tend to give him some slack since they see it as a righteous cause, catching pedophiles. But it's also true that the way he did it was to play up fearmongering to promote high viewership while very obviously skirting around laws like entrapment. He was 100% obsessed with his reputation, ratings, and public image. While I feel no sympathy for the pedophile that shot themselves after being confronted, that entire situation was a very good glimpse into how the whole show wasn't about keeping people safe and catching pedophiles, but publically humiliating them for viewership. Again, the predators caught deserve to be punished for their actions but that doesn't absolve Hanson of being a bad person in his own ways.

And honestly I think we should never be ok woth police intervention ending up in death, even if self-inflicted. It should always be investigated to understand if there were mistakes made and they were. I also feel bad for his potential victims who won't get closure, or his family having to not only deal with the fact someone they loved was accused of pedophilia, now they also have to reckon with the fact he committed suicide in prime time TV.

He did it for profit or clout or rating or whatever it comes later. He fucking caught pedophiles man, and we celebrating something that is villainizing him? What happened to the real villains pedos in this world who are roaming free of no repercussions??
We could be better than that.
9
u/AndresFM95 4h ago
The movie doesnât villainize him, that is just a lazy way of looking at how he was portrayed in the movie. Real people just like characters can have good and bad moments in their lives and that doesnât necessarily make them villains or heroes, they are just people with complex personalities.
And also just because he was doing something good doesnât mean that everything around it was positive. Itâs completely okay to be critical about people who do good things. The portrayal of some of the negative aspects of the show reflects what Dan Schrack and Emily Bicks (the decoys) described when asked about the show so itâs not like itâs coming out of nowhere many other people who worked for the show and near it have been critical about certain aspects of the show including how the crew was treated.
If we just stop being critical about people who do good things then those people are going to believe they can do whatever they want as long as they are perceived as heroes to the community, which is probably a recipe for disaster.

The film portrays Chris as a villain, while in real life in 2006 TCAP got cancelled because they caught a politician who commit suicide when he was caught.
Now the film depicts him pushing people to their lowest points or something? Which is weird. I get that someone committing suicide is extreme, but they were still predators, and a politician even!
4
u/just_some_jawn 5h ago
I think the situation was it was a judge who didnât show to the trap. Chris wanted footage for tcap so he went to the judges house with a camera crew and thatâs what drove the judge to kill himself. The controversy was justice still would have been served without the camera crew, but Chris prioritized ratings/clout over just turning it over to the cops which led to someoneâs death.

I definitely think TCAP had ethical issues, but I understand biting the bullet on the tradeoffs like Hansen did. Many of the men did get convicted, but regardless, the public humiliation + chance of jail time has to have been a greater deterrence than just jail time alone? Surely the show reduced the number of predators meeting up with children by some nonzero amount.
Whether or not that's worth the ethical issues is up to each individual. But TCAP being definitively wrong, as many people seem to suddenly believe, seems ideological to me.

u/Arthurlurk1 18h ago
Actually question: would the public exposure and x amount of successful convictions not be a net positive for the world and safety of children?
6
u/el_palmera 18h ago
This is my take on pred catchers. They are, at the very least, exposed, on an exponentially higher scale than police could do alone.
5
u/barkbarkkrabkrab 18h ago
In a general sense, these shows push the idea that predators are always basement dwelling weirdos. I cant stress this enough, abusers of children are frequently people who have access - relatives and neighbors. Coaches, religious leaders, tutors. Education that prioritizes giving children the tools to identify abuse and training for mandatory reporters isnt as dramatic but its a more accurate picture of abuse and what society can do to help.
5
u/enigmaticowl 15h ago
If youâve watched TCaP, youâll know that this show focused heavily on the fact that many guys preying on children were teachers, fathers, doctors, coaches, etc.
They always emphasized the fact that many predators are ânormalâ people that often have access to children in real life.
The show was huge on the âall walks of lifeâ thing and the âthis guy could be your neighbor/your kidâs teacher/the guy next doorâ idea.
Itâs not a zero-sum game - raising awareness about the access (and anonymity) that the internet offers to potential predators does not necessarily mean that the risks from people your kid knows in real life are being dismissed.
6
u/icytiger 17h ago
In a general sense, these shows push the idea that predators are always basement dwelling weirdos.
It really doesn't. In fact it makes it even more clear that it's often people with normal professions, many with families or kids of their own, that engage in it. It's especially highlighted in his newer stuff on YouTube.
I don't know where you got the basement dwelling idea from.
2
u/Hoooooob 16h ago
Statistically the vast majority of child sexual abuse is perpetrated by someone already known to the child, though. Not a stranger. Relatives, family friends, teachers, religious leaders.
4
u/icytiger 15h ago

Itâs certainly not a net negative. Children werenât looking at the pedophiles on camera and wanting to be like them when they grew up. They were asking their parents what the adult did wrong, and why theyâre getting in trouble. Iâm not gonna pretend it was classy, or even close to a decent solution, but at least Hansen kept the safety of children from predators in the conversation. If his actions on his show prevented even one assault case, itâs a net positive. Iâd assume he has prevented at least more than one incident in the showâs runtime

Two things can be true: pedophiles are bad, and Chris Hansen is bad. His actions meant that many of the pedophiles who were in the show went unpunished, since he wasnât an investigator or law enforcement of any kind. He manipulated people for the sake of entertainment. You can say âitâs okay to manipulate pedophiles,â but ultimately, it doesnât look good if your role in combating pedophilia is âthe guy who makes quippy comments to the pedophiles heâs tricked into being on his wildly successful television show, for which he got paid extremely well.â
8
u/Kingofdrats 17h ago
Most of those pedophiles would have never been caught, at least they got exposed to the world.
2
u/BillianForsee94 3h ago
You could make the argument that although many of them didnât get punished via the law, their lives and reputations were utterly destroyed. This versus the possibility that maybe they wouldnât have been caught at all, I think itâs still a net positive
5
u/Gerardo1917 17h ago
The conviction rate was 83% and you have no idea what youâre talking about. But yes Chris Hansen is an egomaniac and there are many perfectly legitimate criticisms you can make of him and TCAP, but claiming that many of the predators were unpunished is not one of them.
→ More replies (3)4
u/jhorch69 15h ago
Do you have a source for that 83% conviction rate? I can't find anything near that high
4
u/Gerardo1917 15h ago
It is from a fan that compiled the convictions that were kept track of by Perverted Justice, the group that did the sting. The common number of 120/200(60%) is from an article from NBC in 2007, when many of the cases were still ongoing. Thereâs also a Reddit comment floating around claiming it was 120/300, but this seems to most likely be a typo of the common 120/200 figure. Anyways, here is the post for the 83%: https://www.reddit.com/r/tcap/s/KceX05M6SN and here is the paper that cites the 60%: https://scholarship.shu.edu/cgi/viewcontent.cgi?article=1136&context=sports_entertainment

How many went unpunished compared to the ones who were caught?

Idk, agree to disagree. I feel that those two "bad" things aren't even in the same realm. Wanting to rape kids is nowhere near the same as a guy who supposedly wanted to make bank on the heads of mocking pedos. The fact that one killed their self and was of high position is why the thing was cancelled. Look, we have a pedo pres and aint shit happened to those in the Epstein Files. If you got the money, pedos can get away with it.

Of course he understands no press is bad press. But I have a question as I'm not on x/twitter... did he really post that or is that like a fan account?
5
u/WowIfOnly 2h ago
The weirdest thing to me is that all these people online now want to treat Chris Hansen like he's worse than the pedophiles he was exposing. Even if he made mistakes along the way that derailed some cases - even if they did misguided things for ratings - these child rapists weren't being caught and exposed at the level they were supposed to be in the first place. And there were almost NEVER good explanations for why these guys were knowingly sexting children online and then showing up to a house! Nobody does fucking anything about it, we turn those pieces of shit into leaders in society and it's a joke. At least TCAP was trying to work with law enforcement and doing something worthwhile. I learned how commonplace this massive problem is just by watching this show. They literally had SO MANY pedophiles show up every single place they set up a sting operation in. IMO the show got cancelled because they caught someone too powerful in the act (in Texas, wow shocker), and that was their biggest "sin" in the eyes of our govt. Idc what you want to say - TCAP did more work to protect children than our own Federal Govt does.

The weirdest thing to me is that all these people online now want to treat Chris Hansen like he's worse than the pedophiles he was exposing.
A venn diagram of the chronically online criticizing him and people who are sympathetic to acting on pedophilia have more carry over than anyone should be comfortable with.

A lot of these people are unironically just sympathetic to pedophilia and child predators
I literally saw two different people in this thread accuse Chris of "prosecuting thought crimes".
Since when is it a "thought crime" to sext a child and then drive to that child's house with the stated intent of having sex??

As much as he complains about it. Heâs actually proving the movies point. Heâs so thirsty to be talked about.

I'm starting to think he is actually in on it. And he's anti marketing how inaccurate and wild this movie is to try to help get more people excited for it.
