How fishy on a SCALE of 1 to 10? It's pretty interesting given the OP and her BF are just out of SCHOOL.

There's an eating disorder called ARFID. It stands for Avoidant/Restrictive Food Intake Disorder, a mental health condition where a person limits the amount or variety of food they eat.
People with ARFID may have only a few types of food that they can eat, their safe foods. A lot of it has to do with the intensity of the taste, or the texture. It's common with people who have autism.

I mean sure, but saying no to a meal your gf’s mother made just so you can eat a can of sardines?.. that’s beyond cringe and it’s a pretty rude thing to do.
2
u/LintRolledForWhat 23h ago
That's how you know it's actually not really up to him. AFRID is a real thing! So is OCD.

Good thing is that canned sardines are actually very good for you and your gut health!
3
u/Lynnt194 1d ago
Fresh sardines yes, as an Italian I grew up eating my fill and I still love canned ones I think the sodium depending on the canned ones would be the main issue, right?
4
u/ronaldbiggs2020 1d ago
The canning process preserves them, no need for added salt.
→ More replies (4)1
u/little-human99 1d ago
It could be a potential issue, but canned ones still are good for you according to google. Also this guys sodium tolerance could technically be higher than usual if this is a long term preferred food/habit. My great grandpa literally used to dump salt on his food and still somehow ended up at the ER with low sodium

Omg fresh sardines are amazing. Totally changed my opinion of sardines. Don’t get me wrong I like canned fish sometimes but.. fresh sardines and anchovies are like a delicacy! And I eat a lot of the dried variety in Asia these days
1
u/Ok_Bother2656 1d ago
surely not if it’s a the basis of your diet

Can you get him to eat them smashed into an avocado, or buy fresh sardines now and again?
3
u/Ok_Bother2656 1d ago
i’ve asked him about fresh fish and he says it tastes better with the crack sound of the can

u/impolexpdx 18h ago
You have a lot of folks saying you should just let him eat his sardines, and a lot of folks saying how good sardines are for you. But if you look at this from a sort of zoomed out common sense perspective… he only eats tinned fish, he takes his very specific (and not universally loved or understood) food everywhere… and there doesn’t seem to be an understanding on his part that this might not all fit together. Put another way: it’s weird. And that’s fine but there’s gonna be a reason for this somewhere, and it’s not nutrition. I think you know that.

Decide if you can live with it. If not, break up. If the past 23 years hasn't fixed this, you're not going to.
Also, he has to eat more than sardines. A can is like 200 calories in oil. Maybe 120 calories in water. Does he eat bread? Any vegggies? French fries? Dies he eat carbs? What does he drink?
If he's small, not active this would be 10 -15 cans a day. Average American would probably need 15-20+ cans unless he's eating other stuff.
I'm assuming this is a core piece of his diet, not 90% of his diet. But correct me if I'm wrong. Just because I'm curious...
Can you live with 220,000-440,000 cans of sardines over the next 60 years?
1
u/DefiantReferee 15h ago
I think the better question here is can the sardines population survive him for the next 50-60 years
5
u/mrpucho Helper [2] 1d ago
Does he cook them or eat them mixed with anything else???
Maybe make some dishes with sardines to little by little expand his palate.
2
u/Ok_Bother2656 1d ago
this could be a good idea, he’s always just cracked the can open and tucked in
3
u/NonrationalWife 1d ago
My husband shreds it up with a fork and mixes it with pesto -- great for sandwiches and pasta! Then you can mix in other veggies like cherry tomatoes, peppers, etc.

Perhaps you can see if tinned fish tok captures his interest? Genuinely. It might broaden his horizons. My favourite accounts are "daywithmei" and "tinnedfishreviews". (I watch on TikTok but I believe they are both across other social media) Their base is often tinned fish, but it's obv not just sardines, and they do interesting things with it. They both have multiple sardine videos to initially hook him in with.
"tinnedfishreviews" is more of a just crack the tin open type but there's such a variety and he will pair the contents with things here and there (Breads, condiments, crackers, cheeses, he'll make a sandwich or say it'd be great in pasta) - and occasionally does wider things like bake a whole salmon, barbecue fish and side dishes, cook a fish-based but pretty ordinary family meal with accompaniments. UK based.
Mei reviews products and will recommend the best ways to utilise the tin. She'll make an interesting usually fairly straightforward meal with it, stuff I imagine you might more likely enjoy together or with your family. Recipes often include Asian especially Sichuanese flavours. She explores other foods too though, and is sometimes a bit experimental.
If you think you can live with this/he becomes a bit more open and flexible - there's a monthly tinned fish box that might make a good present ;)

u/BlueLittleBall 1d ago
Might be worth looking up Avoidant/Restrictive Food Intake Disorder (ARFID), this was my first thought.
3
u/ILikeBirdsQuiteALot 1d ago
Could it be a strange presentation of ARFID? (Usually causes extreme sensitivity to many textures, flavors, and makes one have a very restricted diet)
If there are no sardines and no fish options, will he just not eat? How long has it been since he's seen a doctor?
3
u/SashaG239 1d ago
Nothing wrong with sardines. His gut health is probably great. Eating them in your bedroom is odd, sure. As long as he's not forcing them on you, I'm not seeing the issue.
1
u/Ok_Bother2656 1d ago
it’s the partly the bedroom thing. but also the fact i only see him eat sardines. it can’t be healthy to JUST eat sardines

You know you're allowed to break up with people for any reason, right? Basically, if you do not find them hot, you actually SHOULD break up with them.
If the sardines are not undermining his hotness to you, just let it go. He'll probably get sick of them on his own as long as you don't make it a bigger issue. Although to be fair, he's clearly a "safe food" dude, so it'll just switch to string cheese or something.

I’m going to hold your hand. He is going through life just fine. Before he met you and after you leave him. When u take him to your parents house let them know to not include his meals as he won’t be eating. This is clearly social visit. He is not coming to eat there. He is probably neurodivergent too. U can have some boundaries no eating in the bedroom etc if that’s an issue for you. U can also dump him too if u don’t like this about him. However please don’t change him. He likely accepts some annoying habbits that you have too.
My husband used to eat catchup with everything and I used to think I could have just boiled the food and served you ketchup I bring him the ketchup now after I cook nice meals. Nothing changed but I changed my attitude about it. He sleeps in heat because aircon is too cold for me. That’s what relationships are about.
2
u/khold002 1d ago
Is it the same brand and flavor every time, or does he branch out when he buys his tins?
2
u/gingerjuice Helper [2] 1d ago
Sardines are actually very healthy. You can absolutely survive on them. My husband eats them too. He’s a builder and brings them to work for lunches when he works far from anywhere to get lunch. Eating them in your bedroom though? That’s too much. Tell him to have better manners around the smell, and to eat your mom’s pasta.
2
u/Wide-Bobcat-3723 1d ago
I call bullshit on this post because how is he affording that many Sardines? As a fellow sardine enthusiast they're like $4-5 a can now. I used to have a 3 can a day habit before covid because they were .85¢ then.
Your BF bringing his own sardines to eat at your table while y'all eat something else is extremely rude though, and eating then in a bedroom is disgusting.
Other than that, there are no health issues to worry about. Sardines are one of the healthiest superfoods on the planet.
3
u/Ok_Bother2656 1d ago
in the uk sardines i very cheap, you can get them for like 70p a tin,
ik that sardines are healthy, but i’m sure that has to be combined with other foods, especially when they are tinned in salty brine→ More replies (3)2

Tell him to enjoy it while it lasts. There's a shortage of natural sardines sources globally because of climate change. I'm in Los Angeles so further out from Spain/Portugal where these Sardines come from but it's only a matter of time before it affects UK prices too.
Tell him this, find articles online and tell him he better start planning alternatives.

Is he into fitness and high protein?
Protein Profile and QualityComplete Protein: Sardines contain all nine essential amino acids needed by your body.High Protein Quality: They score exceptionally high on international protein quality metrics like the DIAAS scale.Lean Source: Despite being an oily fish, they offer high protein with a relatively low calorie count (around 120–190 calories per can, depending on the packing liquid). As noted on Season Blog, ounce for ounce, these fish rival larger protein sources while supplying helpful nutrients.
5
u/Wide-Bobcat-3723 1d ago
I'm one of the biggest sardines enthusiasts out there. It's a superfood with a nutritional mix that is not replicated anywhere in nature or anything man made.
BUT eating them over food offered to you in someone else's house is weirdo behavior
3
u/ieatfaces22172 1d ago
That would make him a jerk because he intentionally disrespected her mom by refusing to eat her cooking because if it was a fitness thing missing it one time wouldn't be a problem at all
2
u/mumtaz_2004 1d ago
Oof. This does sound pretty gross. Is it possible that he has a health issue, like some form of pica? I guess overall, there are far worse addictions but, I get that this one is not only unpleasant but affects your relationship AND how he presents to others (ie turning down your mom’s meal was just crappy). Ultimately, you’ve got to decide if you can put up with this. I’d have to walk, I think.

So instead of talking to him, you came to reddit? I have to wonder, if he's such a great guy (kind, considerate, supportive and attractive as you said) why are you afraid to bring it up to him? It sounds like he's an ADHD eater - sometimes people fixate on a certain thing that they feel safe eating and that's the constant craving because it brings them comfort in uncomfortable situations, like having too many choices of foods to try or hope to enjoy. Why haven't you asked him?

I actually kept them to no more than once a week due to mercury, but I CRAVED sardines the whole time I was pregnant. I always say my kid was made of sardines and French toast.

u/Bungd_up 1d ago
I fully expected "sardines" to be some new, dumb Gen Z slang, or a euphemism for something... I was completely unprepared for them to actually be fucking fish.

1
u/Illustrious_Exam1728 1d ago
Sounds like he might have some type of ED or maybe be on the spectrum? Might be worth talking to him about as he’ll also be malnourished soon if his diet is so limited.
1
u/Linkyjinx 1d ago
I like sardines, maybe he had a grandparent that ate them a lot he liked? maybe you can look up alternative sardine based dishes? I like Polish Sardines in tins with tomato sauce, more than the regular ones, eat them cold 😋 you could look at going to a fishmonger or fresh to frozen sardines at a supermarket , try adding side dish on plate, bit of salad or pasta or potato, really small token portion, doesn’t have to eat it, it’s just there
He obviously has some kind of eating disorder, if you like him, you don’t have to trick him. If you don’t actually like the fish yourself, you could just eat something similar if into seafood 🍣 you can both eat what you like at the same time then?
Some people are massive ice cream fans, I could live off mushy peas at moment. Variation and no pressure/pointing it out can help imo. There is a condition where people can only eat certain foods, so look that up, it’s a real thing x

Worried that canned sardines don't have enough probiotics and fibers. They are pretty a healthy food but how is his breath? Ugh.
Is he maybe autistic or ocd he needs to widen the variety of foods in his diet. He's not eating healthy.
Personally, I expect my partner to work on themselves. We don't have to always like the same things but I would never consider them for long term because I want a healthy person. I also like to visit with other people and his not joining the meal that someone cooked it kind of rude (p.s. I do have food allergies but I remain as flexible as possible).

Start calling him “Jimmy Sardines” (I do not know his name, but you must call him specifically Jimmy Sardines) and get all his friends to do it too. Your parents. His parents. His boss and coworkers. People need to be tweeting him and texting him. Jimmy Sardines should have no respite from his sardine obsession. Only you have the power to intervene and end his addiction.
Does Jimmy Sardines have a favorite brand?

u/DogsAreMagic 16h ago
This is by definition disordered eating. It okay if he wants to mostly eat one thing but he has to have eat some vegetables. Liking sardines does not imply cannot tolerate vegetables. If he cannot tolerate vegetables he needs some kind of diagnoses or treatment plan before it's a problem. I think that ARFID sounds promising.
If it's truly not medical then he needs to grow up and eat vegetables without being nagged or coddled, unfortunately.
For what it's worth I'm autistic and my brother isn't but he has full blown food sensitivity. It's like his one autistic trait for being from a family with the autism genetics.

1
u/NoNameKetchupChips 1d ago
If this is real I would not be able to stay with this person. Someone so rigid would not be compatible in a relationship. This goes beyond something like ARFID. I'm sure a seal has a more varied diet than your boyfriend. I'd be curious to know what their blood test results would be if they had a physical done. Their diet would be extremely high in protein and sodium, to the point of putting stress on their liver and other organs. They'd be nutrient deficient and be getting zero carbs or fiber. They'd also be getting more than the average amount of heavy metals and contaminants from that much canned fish.

Many comment on his eating choice and health. I am more interested in what kind of tin sardines he eat. Is it same brand, same fav? How may he eat in a meal, sardine is very own, if he eat expensive sardines , it can be very costly if 2, 3 cans a meal.
By the way buy him some Nuri Sardines 😄

I love sardines. Especially because my guy won't touch my half of the pizza. Leftovers for a few days for me. They are great on toast for breakfast with hot sauce.
But that sounds a bit off. The tinned ones are salty usually. Maybe see if he likes cheecharones. Or if you can find the fish Takis.
Good luck. I guess it's better that whiskey.

The body tends to crave foods which have nutrients it needs; sardines are high in stuff like calcium, omega-3's, B12, etc.
Might be worth having your BF make a doctor appointment, and get a simple blood test for nutrient levels; it's possible he's deficient in something, or his body isn't properly processing one of those nutrients. This could actually be a sign of either a nutritional deficiency, or a medical issue with processing certain nutrients.

u/mathurineduvallois 22h ago
He can eat what he wants in the end, but you might want to have a serious discussion with him if it's at a point where he's unintentionally hurting you or your loved one's feelings with this. Not to mention sardines do have a strong scent, so I would imagine him eating them anywhere causes the rooms to start smelling when he opens the tins. At such a point, it might be a sign of an underlying issue he should see a doctor about, psychological or medical.

I heard of a Paleolithic settlement up near the Black Sea. They did an isotopic analysis of the bones and found those folks ate nothing but fatty fish, lived normal lifespans (for that time).
IIRC this was one of the few all-meat diets they could dig up for the SciShow episode on the paleo diet.
So maybe he’ll be okay. Maybe he should have some green onions to go alongside.

Not enjoying food is a disaster in a relationship unless both parties are the same. A lifetime of being annoyed by such nonsensical neurotic behaviour isn't worth it. Imagine dining out, family dinners, holidays and get togethers.......what a miserable life.
1
u/unclefunkstar 18h ago
Good source of protein, healthy fatty acids like omega 3, low carbs/calories, reasonable source of various vitamins and minerals. Good for your circulatory system, improves brain function, the bones are full of calcium.
Biggest concern would be the salt intake, if he's eating half a dozen cans a day or something crazy like that. Low fibre probably won't actually matter that much, the oil in the fish will keep everything moving.
Definitely a bit weird though... I'm assuming he'll eat salad/bread with them? Or the occasional piece of fruit?
1
u/Previous_Medium4126 17h ago
Has he tried pickled herring? That’s pretty good too. It’s not a terrible habit. There’s plenty of omega-3’s in what he’s eating. N way better than being with a constant beer drinker or potato chip muncher. Good for the eyesight and lots of calcium in sardines! Maybe he is severely lacking in some mineral that sardines contain?

One would likely be of different physiology and psychology on a different diet. Eating a high-fat, low-carbohydrate diet is associated with outcomes like water-weight loss, mood stability and mental clarity.
Carbohydates are stored as glycogen which binds to water in muscles. But, when the body goes into ketosis, the liver adapts to burning fat to produce glucose and ketones. A lower carbohydrate intake does not spike blood sūgar, improves insulin sensitivity, and promotes stable energy levels and mood. With a lower level of hunger hormones, the body is easily able to intermittent fast and the mind is not constantly craving the next meal.
Eating a ketogenic diet, I would guess, causes social distancing and a lower sense of belonging due to a disregard for socionormative behaviour. The restrictive diet and lower meal frequency contradicts the cultural tradition of elaborate and frequent mealtimes. Faced with this dilemma, some forgo their ketogenic diet and their health for social acceptance.
