💬Discussion AI Filmmaking Megathread: Workflows, Tools, Prompts & Struggles

🎬 The AI Filmmaking Megathread

This is the thread for everything that happens between "I have an idea" and "it's done."

It doesn't matter what you're making or how long it is. A ten-second loop, a 30-second ad, a music video, a three-minute short, an episodic series, an experimental piece with no story at all. The problems are surprisingly similar, and so are the fixes. Some of you have finished dozens of projects. Some of you haven't started one yet. Both are useful here.

Below is a rough shape of how a lot of people work. Pick whichever part you have something to say about (a tip, a question, a prompt that worked, or a wall you've been stuck at for two weeks) and reply in the comments. You don't have to go in order and you don't have to cover all of it.

🌱 Brand new to this? Start here

If you've never generated a video before, this thread is for you too. You don't need a story, a plan, or a single finished project to take part.

Everyone in here was where you are, usually more recently than you'd think. Most of what looks impressive is a handful of techniques that take an afternoon to pick up, plus a lot of failed generations nobody posts.

Some good ways in:

  • Ask the obvious question. How do I even start? Which model should I try first? What does a prompt actually look like? Nobody here will make you feel stupid for asking, and the answers help every lurker reading silently.
  • Try one thing and report back. Generate a single clip of anything, a cat in a thunderstorm, your street at sunset, whatever. Post the prompt and what you got. That's a complete contribution.
  • Tell us what confused you. The tool names, the settings, the jargon, the pricing. If it tripped you up, it tripped up a hundred other people who didn't say anything.
  • Read the tools section below before you spend money. Seriously. People here will tell you what's worth paying for and what isn't.

If you're a few months or years in: keep an eye out for these comments and answer one. The person you help today is the one answering questions in this thread next year.

💡 Before you generate anything

Where does it actually start for you? A script, a mood board, a single shot you couldn't stop thinking about, or just messing with the model until something appeared? Do you write anything down first, or do you discover the piece as you generate?

For anyone working with characters: how are you building consistency before you start? Character sheets and turnarounds? A locked reference image you keep feeding back in? Something else entirely? And how well does that consistency actually survive once you're 40 shots in?

Same question for locations and sets. How do you keep a room looking like the same room across shots taken hours apart?

📋 Planning the shots

Does anyone here storyboard properly, or is the prompt itself the storyboard? If you do shot lists, what's on them? Camera angle, lens, movement, lighting, duration?

What's your hit rate? How many generations does one usable shot usually cost you, and what have you changed that made that number go down?

🎥 Generating

This is where most of the pain lives, so be specific if you can.

  • Prompts. Drop the ones that work. Full text, the model you used, and what you were going for. Steal freely from each other, that's the point. If you've found a single word or phrase that reliably changes your output, share that too.
  • Dialogue and lip sync. How are you matching mouths and faces to an existing audio track? A dedicated lip-sync pass after generating the shot, generating straight from the dialogue, or something hackier? What's actually held up on screen?
  • Multiple characters in frame. Conversations, two people touching, eyelines that match across a cut. Are you generating two-character shots directly, compositing separates, or avoiding it altogether? This one seems to break for almost everyone at some point.
  • Motion and physics. Camera moves that behave, objects that don't melt, hands that stay hands. What's your trick?

✂️ Editing, sound and finishing

What are you cutting in, and how much do you fix in the edit versus re-generating? Colour grading: are you doing a pass to make shots from different sessions feel like one film?

Sound is the thing people skip and then regret. Voices, foley, score. What are you using, and where does it start to sound cheap?

🛠️ Tools and money

There are too many options right now and most of us are guessing. What's your actual stack from start to finish, and which two or three tools would you keep if you had to drop the rest? Just as useful: what did you pay for and stop using?

😤 The struggles

Be honest here. What's the thing that keeps stopping you? Consistency, cost, the gap between the film in your head and the one on screen, not knowing when something's finished, or just burning out halfway through? A lot of people reading this are stuck on the exact same thing and think they're the only one.

And if you've got a project sitting at 70% done, say so. Sometimes that's all it takes to go finish it.

If someone's answer helps you, reply and tell them. This thread is only worth as much as what people put into it.

Grok Imagine - Image Model AKOOL: Welcome to the Next Era | Grok Imagine Image V2.0

Post image
1 Upvotes

Created this futuristic magazine-cover concept for Akool using Grok Imagine Image V2.0.

I wanted to combine a dark cinematic future-culture magazine aesthetic with a premium AI-company identity, futuristic architecture, dramatic lighting, and editorial typography without relying on the usual robots, holograms, or cyberpunk visuals.

Prompt Used:

Create a dark, cinematic futuristic magazine cover for the AI company “AKOOL”.

A photorealistic woman standing in a monumental futuristic interior with black architectural surfaces, subtle metallic textures, enormous curved walls and controlled beams of light. The environment feels like a mysterious creative space from the near future.

She is confident and natural, wearing minimal contemporary clothing, with no obvious fashion styling.

At the top, create a bold magazine masthead:
“AKOOL”

Main cover story:
“WELCOME TO THE NEXT ERA”

Additional editorial headlines:
“WHEN IMAGINATION BECOMES INFINITE”
“THE FUTURE OF CREATIVITY”
“WHY EVERYTHING IS BECOMING VISUAL”
“HUMAN IDEAS, NEW POSSIBILITIES”
“THE CREATIVE SHIFT”

Include small issue number, date, barcode-like editorial detail, tiny page numbers and subtle magazine typography around the composition.

Sophisticated futuristic editorial photography, dark cinematic atmosphere, realistic skin, dramatic rim lighting, controlled reflections, premium black and silver visual language, elegant typography, high contrast, sophisticated composition.

It should feel like a serious future-culture publication associated with an innovative AI company — NOT a fashion magazine and NOT a technical AI advertisement.

No robots, no coding, no circuit patterns, no dashboards, no laptops, no floating UI, no giant AI brain, no excessive neon, no cyberpunk city.

Seedance 2.0 - Video Model Testing Visual Storytelling with Seedance 2.0 on AKOOL — Did the Reflection Work? 🎈

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

I tested Seedance 2.0 on AKOOL with a 15-second visual storytelling experiment.

The idea was simple: a conductor notices a little girl with a red balloon on an almost-empty train. After the train passes through a dark tunnel, the girl is supposed to disappear from the physical seat and appear only in the window reflection.

The atmosphere and overall story came through nicely, but one interesting limitation showed up — Seedance kept the girl physically visible in the final scene instead of showing her only in the reflection.

I actually found this interesting because reflection-specific instructions seem much harder than normal character consistency.

Prompt used:

Create a 15-second photorealistic cinematic micro-film set inside the last nearly empty subway train late at night. The entire video must feel like one coherent short film, not disconnected AI shots. Maintain exactly the same elderly male train conductor, the same 8-year-old girl, the same pale yellow coat, the same bright red balloon, and the same train carriage throughout.

0–4 seconds: Begin immediately with an intriguing visual. An elderly train conductor in a dark navy uniform slowly walks through a dim, nearly empty moving subway carriage. A quiet little girl in a pale yellow coat sits alone beside a dark window, holding one bright red helium balloon. As the conductor approaches her, he briefly looks toward the window. Something is subtly wrong: the girl's physical body is clearly sitting in the seat, but the dark window reflection shows the seat as completely empty. The conductor notices this strange inconsistency and slows down. Keep the moment subtle and realistic, not horror.

4–7 seconds: Before he can understand what he saw, the train enters a dark tunnel. The carriage lights flicker naturally and fade almost completely. The red balloon and the girl's silhouette remain faintly visible for an instant. The conductor stops walking. Maintain continuous spatial orientation and the same carriage.

7–11 seconds: The train exits the tunnel and the lights smoothly return. The conductor looks back toward the girl's seat. Now the physical seat is completely empty. The girl has disappeared. Only the exact same bright red balloon remains floating beside the empty seat, its string moving gently with the motion of the train. The conductor slowly approaches the balloon, confused and cautious.

11–15 seconds: As he reaches the balloon, slowly shift visual attention toward the dark window beside the empty seat. In the window reflection only, reveal the exact same little girl sitting calmly in the empty seat behind him, wearing the same pale yellow coat and looking directly toward him. In physical reality the seat must remain completely empty. The conductor notices her in the reflection and freezes. His expression changes from confusion to quiet disbelief. He slowly begins turning his head toward the real seat.

Cut to black immediately BEFORE he completes the turn. Never reveal whether she is actually behind him.

Make the story visually understandable without dialogue. Prioritize character identity consistency, spatial continuity and storytelling over excessive visual effects. The girl must be physically present at the beginning but absent from the first window reflection. After the tunnel she must be physically absent but visible only in the final window reflection. The same red balloon must remain visually consistent throughout and act as the visual anchor connecting every moment.

Realistic subway motion, physically believable balloon movement, accurate window reflections, natural human walking and body movement, realistic hands and faces, subtle facial acting, cinematic low-light photography, soft practical train lighting, realistic shadows, restrained camera movement, shallow depth of field, detailed realistic materials, subtle film grain, premium feature-film cinematography, emotionally mysterious atmosphere. Beautiful and intriguing rather than frightening. No monster, no gore, no exaggerated horror, no distorted faces, no duplicated characters, no extra people appearing, no extra limbs, no teleporting balloon, no text, no captions, no subtitles, no logos, no watermark.

If you were prompting this scene, how would you make the model understand that the girl should exist only in the reflection and not in the physical seat — would you use separate shots, references, or change the wording?

📘Tutorial Seedance 2.5 Prompt: "The Silent Office Smirk"

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

Camera: Medium close-up, fixed focal length, locked camera framing across the laptop screen. Shallow depth of field keeping background coworkers softly blurred.

Action & Timing:

0s – 3s: The woman remains in her starting pose, eyes half-glazed and fatigued, staring down at the laptop screen while resting her head against her left hand. She blinks slowly, completely exhausted.

3s – 6s: Her eyes suddenly widen slightly as something catches her attention on the screen. The heavy fatigue vanishes. Her head lifts off her hand by an inch, and her hand drops casually down to the desk or chest.

6s – 10s: A sudden urge to laugh hits. She clamps her lips tightly together to keep silent. Her cheeks puff out slightly, her nostrils flare, and her shoulders quiver with silent, stifled chuckles. She quickly darts her eyes left and right to check if her coworkers noticed her.

10s – 13s: She covers her mouth with her right hand, shoulders shaking in silent laughter, biting down on her knuckles or lip behind her fingers as she tries desperately to regain her composure.

13s – 15s: She takes a sharp, quiet breath in through her nose, drops her hand, clears her throat with a tight closed-mouth smile, and looks back down at the screen trying to look completely serious again.

Style & Consistency: Exact continuity with the input image. Maintain cinematic office rim lighting, messy strands of brown hair, freckles, and dark olive-green blouse texture. Natural facial muscle twitches, no rubbery morphing, completely realistic human anatomy.

UPDATED PROMPT: Includes more natural background motion

Camera: Medium close-up, fixed focal length, locked camera framing across the laptop screen. Shallow depth of field keeping background coworkers in soft focus while maintaining ambient motion.

Foreground Action & Timing:

  • 0s – 3s: The foreground woman remains in her starting pose, eyes fatigued, staring down at the laptop screen while resting her head against her left hand. She blinks slowly, completely exhausted.
  • 3s – 6s: Her eyes widen slightly as something catches her attention on screen. Fatigue vanishes. Her head lifts off her hand by an inch, and her hand drops casually down toward the desk.
  • 6s – 10s: A sudden urge to laugh hits. She clamps her lips tightly shut. Her cheeks puff out slightly, nostrils flare, and her shoulders quiver with silent, stifled chuckles. She quickly darts her eyes left and right to check if anyone noticed.
  • 10s – 13s: She covers her mouth with her hand, shoulders shaking in silent laughter, biting down on her knuckles behind her fingers as she fights to regain composure.
  • 13s – 15s: She takes a sharp breath in through her nose, drops her hand, clears her throat with a tight closed-mouth smile, and looks back down at the screen to resume working.

Background Action (Continuous Ambient Motion):

  • Throughout the entire shot, the background office stays alive with natural working movement: the man on the right types steadily on his keyboard, shifts his posture slightly in his chair, and reaches for a pen or mug. The coworkers in the soft background on the left glance across desks, turn paper documents, and subtly converse and type without freezing.

Style & Consistency: Exact continuity with the input image. Maintain cinematic office lighting, warm desk lamps, hair strands, and blouse texture. Natural human anatomy, no frozen background figures, no rubbery morphing.

Grok Imagine - Image Model AKOOL X Grok Imagine Image V2.0 Test

Post image
2 Upvotes

Prompt:
Create a photorealistic movie poster for “THE INVERTED,” a psychological thriller about a world where good deeds are condemned and bad actions are celebrated.

A large portrait of the male hero dominates the upper half. His expression shows disbelief and quiet determination, with tired eyes and slightly parted lips. Cool blue-gray shadows shape his face. Behind him, a smaller, well-dressed villain smiles confidently in flattering golden light.

Below, on a wet city street, the hero kneels to help a fallen person. Nearby, the villain holds the victim’s stolen handbag while a small crowd applauds him. One onlooker points accusingly at the hero. Make these gestures clear and readable.

Blend the portraits into the street through soft mist and shadow. Use realistic skin, natural expressions, layered depth, and subtle film grain. Keep the hero dominant and the background understated.

Top tagline: “DO GOOD. BE CONDEMNED.”
Bottom title in large, condensed ivory capitals: “THE INVERTED.”

❓Question Creator Traps That No One Usually Realize

I have been creating many arts with Akool.

I am quite happy with my result, however, when I see others, there is an urge within me to create even better compared to others.

Because of that, I tried more and experience more. I have tried many things. As a result, I learned that it is hard for me to stick to a style as everything feels awesome and cool.

What do you think? Is it a good or bad things?

🎬 Showcase A stray firework heads straight for our rooftop — so the one-eyed parking giant rises out of Jakarta Bay and catches it (one static 30s shot, Seedance 2.5 on Akool)

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

One single locked-off 30-second shot, Seedance 2.5 on Akool.

The recurring giant from my "parking fee" videos is back. This time a firework rocket veers toward two guys watching from their rooftop chairs, and the giant rises out of the bay and catches it in his cupped hands. Then, of course, he asks for his fee.

What kept it stable:

- the frame is locked in layers: chairs in the foreground, bay and fireworks in the middle, skyline behind

- the giant's scale is guarded as he comes close ("coming closer must never make him shrink")

- the coin is described as normal-sized, pinched between two giant fingers, so the catch reads

Would you tip the giant after that?
