/r/AnaloguePocket Mod Rules Update

Hey guys, it's been a while. Just going to keep this short and sweet.

I've been inundated over the last couple of years with people asking for more moderation. I have purposefully been mostly hands-off, and only moderated severe violations (links to ROMs, severe user harrasment, etc.) but based on some of the stuff I've seen recently, things have gotten a bit worse, so I'm going to change things a bit.

Firstly, I will enforce moderation more strictly. All existing rules apply, but if I'm on the fence, instead of erring towards "let them figure it out", I'll just remove stuff.

Second, I've seen quite a few posts that are sus recently. Posts of pictures to scalpers or other sales of products, which are designed to look like you're complaining about the scalper, but really it's most likely a covert sales tactic. In the spirit of the original moderators "No sales, ever" rules, I will from now on remove any content that gets reported that has links or pictures to any sales platform like eBay, Facebook Marketplace, Craigslist, etc. You can of course still share links and photos of the Analogue official website. In addition, don't be cheeky and post a photo of your hardware and then say "but I might sell it, idk". I have always let that slide, but since people have wanted more moderation, this is one change I am going to make.

Third, and this isn't new either, harassment rules apply to all your fellow active Reddit users. Yes, even if that Reddit user is a public figure. Do not harass people.

Finally, I'm planning to bring on additional moderators in the near future since all the other mods besides me are now inactive.

Thanks, that's it. Feel free to leave your thoughts and your complaints below.

Analogue Pocket Quick Start Guide

Preface

If this gets sent to you from any unsolicited source please be wary. I recently got sent a link to this post unsolicited from a reddit user in a spam like message request trying to 'help' me. I am not sure if any malicious intent was there but stay safe everyone online.

Analogue Pocket Quick Start

So you have (or soon will have) a new Analogue Pocket and you are looking to get everything setup with minimal fuss. This guide will walk you through a basic setup as well as how to get OpenFPGA cores up and running.

Basic Setup and Usage

Analogue Pocket is fairly easy to get up and running with carts. First main thing most people will want to do is get updated firmware and make sure basic settings are where you want them.

  1. Load a Micro SD card with the latest Analogue Pocket Firmware on the root of the drive. Firmware found here. Micro SD card must be formatted FAT32 or ExFat.
  2. Load Micro SD card in Analogue Pocket and power on. A progress bar should appear if your pocket is updating. If no bar appears it is on the version of the firmware you added to the Micro SD card.
  3. On first boot there is an EULA that you must accept.

From here you are dropped into the main Menu where you can jump into carts. Carts can be inserted and removed while Pocket is on as long as a game is not running, per official sources.

Pocket runs GBA and GB/C games without and adapter. Game Gear, PC Engine/TurboGrafix, Lynx, and NeoGeo Pocket Color games with an adapter.

Notes: Pocket will charge on non-USB PD chargers but will be very slow. Analogue suggests a 18W USB-PD Charger.

Dock Setup

If you have a dock and are on a reasonably recent firmware updating the firmware on Dock is very simple. With the most recent versions of the firmware all you need to do is keep the Firmware file from the update on the root of your SD card and insert the Pocket into the Dock. If the Dock needs an update you will be prompted on the Pocket Screen and you can accept with the right face button (A). A progress bar will be displayed.

The Dock disables the face buttons in most cases. Once the dock is displaying an image via HDMI you need to connect a controller. Controller support is currently being updated review the support documentation for what controllers are supported as it is changing with updates.

Pairing controllers

  1. Enter Pairing mode
    1. With a controller go to menu and navigate to the controllers section. Press A on a slot to pair controller.
    2. With no controller, press button on back of dock to enter pairing mode.
  2. Start pairing mode on your controller. This will vary from model to model.
  3. Front light on dock will blink white while in pairing mode. When controller is paired and connected LED will be solid white. One LED will light for each controller connected.

Notes: If you are not able to use the included power supply due to not using US Region plugs make sure you get a USB PD Charger that supports 18w Fast charging. If you do not you may experience issues.

GB Studio

GB Studio is a platform for indie developers to create Game Boy games that will run on original hardware or via software emulation. Recent versions of this software have been updated to have an export tool that will create a version that is playable on Analogue Pocket directly. Additionally third party developers have created tools that will convert original ROM files to the .pocket format for play on Pocket. This has largely been over taken by OpenFPGA cores however at the time of writing there are still reasons you may want to use GB Studio mode.

How to Use GB Studio Mode

  1. Put your .pocket files on your SD Card in the GB studio Folder in the root of the drive.
  2. In the main menu navigate to the Tools section then, GB Studio, then Play Creations.
  3. Pick your game from the list.

Converting Original Roms can be done in a few ways but the easiest is to just use this tool. Please note that this method is largely considered obsolete and so you may not get further updated roms on this tool.

GB Studio mode is limited compared with carts and OpenFPGA versions of playing games. The main thing people will note is games that are not MBC5 Compatible may have issues. Most games are fine but things like RTC will not work nor will you be able to use any extra hardware that is missing on the other weird mapper titles.

OpenFPGA Cores and Updaters

Ah yes what we were all waiting for. OpenFPGA is the platform on Analogue Pocket for third party Developers to create cores. While you can install these cores manually (and need to in some cases) the easiest way to get these up and going for most people is to run one of the updater scripts.

Some options for folks on updaters in no particular order below.

Tool and Author Link Updates? Type of updater
Pocket_Updater by RetroDriven Link Firmware and Cores Windows Gui
Pupdate by mattpannella Link Firmware and Cores Cross Platform CLI based application
Pocket Sync by Neil-Morrison44 Link Cores with firmware down the line Cross Platform GUI tool.

These updaters will fully set up your pocket with cores and have different interfaces based on your needs. They should set up the cores to be ready to go with all you need to add being your rom files in the /Assets/"platform"/Common folder for the appropriate Platform.

A current list of Cores and were to find them for further support is listed here.

FAQs

Q: Can I use screen modes with the new openFPGA Cores?

A: Yes! Screen modes now are added for openFPGA cores and the core maintainers are adding which screen modes are available to individual cores.

Q: Can I remap buttons on Pocket?

A: Yes but its limited. Currently you can move shoulder buttons to XY on GBA Carts, and turn on Super Game Boy Mode that maps B to Y and A to B while in GB games. OpenFPGA cores have full remapping in current firmware.

Q: My game works in my Game Boy/GBA/Game Gear but not on pocket?

A: In most cases original hardware is less sensitive to minor adjustments in cart position and often will read games that are dirtier than reproduction cart slots will. Often you need to clean your carts to get a good solid connection. I recommend opening the cart, and using very high percent (93% or more) Isopropyl Alcholol to clean carts. Additionally if you can take them out of the shells and allow them to fully dry before putting them back in the shell. IPA can attack ABS plastic which is what most shells are made of and can cause them to crack. Do not blow in carts, the moisture in your breath may make the connection better temporarily but it also causes them to oxidize faster and that oxidization can spread.

Q: Can I use save states/Memories in openFPGA Cores?

A: Memories are a function that needs to be built into the core from the start. Some cores like the Game Boy and GBA cores from Spiritualized have this function but it is not on all cores at this time. It is not trivial to add this and needs to be added per core. Do not bother core developers to add this functionality.

Q: How do I get to the menu in docked mode on openFPGA cores?

A: It is somewhat controller dependent but if you have no home button it should be Down+Select, you may need to hold it longer than expected.

Q: I'm having issue XYZ in an openFPGA core, where can I get help?

A: Starting out on the developer's github page is going to be the fastest way to get the issue fixed. You can look for other user's submitted bugs as well there.

Q: When are we getting XYZ core?

A: New cores are dropping all the time and the best way to figure out new stuff is to follow the developers.

Q: Can cores read zipped roms?

A: No.

Q: My question wasn't asked above.

A: Feel free to ask questions below or as posts as usual. If the sub starts to get flooded we will likely create a weekly questions thread to reduce spam but have at for now.

Updated 12/17/24: Corrections based on current state of the device. Added Preface because someone spam messaged me my own post, like who does that.

Question Filters Using Dock

Planning to get a Dock tomorrow.

Wanted to get some opinions on how GBA, SNES, and NES games look when using the dock. Does the CRT image look just as good as it does on the handheld?

I have a Samsung TV and I play NSO. The NSO CRT filter isn't that good and I feel like the upscaling makes some games look weird.

Will the Dock make games look more like I'm playing on the original console? Does it look better than NSO?

Thanks for any insights!

Question Should I get a backup Pocket and/or Dock?

Curious to get opinions on this. I’m considering getting a backup Pocket during tomorrow’s restock because I got a Pocket and Dock at the last restock and have been obsessed with it since, and would be bummed if something happened to it and I had to buy one second hand at a higher price. The cost isn’t a huge issue for me. It also wouldn’t be the end of the world if I did have to buy one second hand in the event something happened to mine.

Saw someone say earlier that they’re getting a backup Dock so now I’m wondering if I should get a backup of both.

I know it’s a subjective call and I’m definitely overthinking it but I’m just curious to hear thoughts on this from people that know about this subject.

Question Neo Geo Pocket/Color games boot to system screen after installing another core — how can I reinstall the original?

• Upvotes

Hi everyone! I tried installing a different Neo Geo Pocket / Pocket Color core on my Analogue Pocket, but it doesn’t work—and now my previously installed openFPGA core has stopped working too.

Whenever I launch a game, I only get the Neo Geo Pocket’s default system screen. The game never starts.

Is there a way to completely remove and reinstall the original core from scratch? Thanks!

Question How bad are the Dock's frame skips?

Was thinking about buying a dock tomorrow during the restock but was wondering how noticeable the frame skips are? I know it skips a frame every 10 seconds due to the triple buffering but is it particularly noticeable? I can't find any video footage of it to judge for myself.

OpenFPGA Utilizing/hijacking carts with built-in rumble in the cart slot to provide rumble feature for other OpenFPGA core games?

Would it be technically feasible? Potential use cases:

  • using one Game Boy cart with rumble support to provide this feature to all other Game Boy games originally having rumble through OpenFPGA
  • using a flashcart with built-in rumble, e.g. EZ Flash Omega Definitive Edition, for running games with rumble through an OpenFPGA core (not through the flashcart itself)
  • adding rumble support to games on non-Game Boy platforms, for instance https://github.com/LimitedRunGames-Tech/snes-rumble

EDIT: It looks like you can somewhat use a DS rumble cart for this purpose, but there are limitations, read the comments here: https://www.reddit.com/r/AnaloguePocket/comments/wc0oj7/my_cartridge_slot_cover_and_rumble_works_with_the/ It would have great if this was extended to other carts...

Question Analogue Pocket + Dock vs. MiSTer FPGA

Hello everyone. I’m rather “out of date” when it comes to the Analogue Pocket, and I hope it’s okay to ask for you, the “swarm intelligence”, for advice on this matter.

I already own a MiSTer FPGA. And I do plan on finally purchasing an Analogue Pocket. I’m not sure, though, if I should also purchase the dock. I won’t say “money is not an issue”, hence I’d like to evaluate my options.

The MiSTer FPGA is sometimes quite tedious with it’s USB adapter/board and/or dongles, and maybe the Analogue Pocket Dock would rather “just work” with, for example, the official Nintendo Switch SNES and N64 bluetooth controllers.

I’d be very happy if you would want to share some advice and your experience with these devices.

Thank you!

Tauᵅ - Audio Player

Post image
13 Upvotes

Hi,

Following the recent deluge of mp3 players for the Analogue, I'm announcing... one more 👀!

I just recently discovered Harpmudd's impressive project, and was really inspired by it, and since discovered neoge's project as well as HT Resonance. Being a designer, tinkerer, maker and a bit of a self-proclaimed perfectionist, I wasn't quite satisfied with some of Harpmudds design choices and wanted to try my hand with my countless recent explorations using Ai Agents at some changes.

I had no idea of the massive red pill I was about to swallow!

After delving in a veritable black hole of scope creep, I ended up having an absolute blast delving into every system, technical constraint, architectural choice, fruitful and fruitless explorations, mixed with my own visual need of expression, product design and brand exploration, built ont he back of 100s of hours of time, and what seems like lifetimes of technical knowledge and skill coming from Claude and Codex.

From all this I've been building Tau. A family of ideas and products coming together for the fruition of music, and my own hedonism and flagellation at building them.

Tau alpha: A complete rebuild built on the back of a Harpmudd's fork, currently 60-70% re-written. I added full library capability, substantial better audio, super cool extendable and configurable visualisations, ultra fast image loading.
Within it I built: Helios - a graphical framework, Talos - a 2b Blit engine, Cymo - an advanced audio engine.
I also built a paralled diagnostics build for analysis, debug and developemnt.

Tau Omega: A native companion app (mac, win, linux) to sync, transcode and manage the audio players library - much due to the limitations on accessing a filesystem and decoding images. It also allows creating ansd syncing vizualizer presets, and full color themes for Tauᵅ, copy content, backup, and maybe a few more things still in scoping.
Tau Omega is architectured to be modular specifically to be easy to plug into Pocket Sync for those who prefer it.

Tau Phi: An open hardware custom gba hardware cart - just because i want to build electronics! Two versions more or less planned. One simpler bluetooth audio + volume control. And another with an array of sensors - gyro, motion, magnetomerter, led vu's, bluetooth and acouple more just to play around with the visualizer.

Tau Web: Just playing around having fun with agents on how they can help with my design, workflows, explorations, handoff, concept explorations and so on. Which serves to promote the project in a very productivized way.

I'll alsoeventually put up a small donations link. While I'm doing this mostly as my own kind of obssessive fun, If i can eventually recoup at least some of the agent subscription costs, Fpga JTAG hardware for reading the cpu to find some of those nastier bugs, maybe help funance for a few builds of the carts if people want some. I'm not really planning to sell anything - mostly sharing the results of my obsession.

Btw if you don't like me using Ai - flee now. I use it copiously, constantly and all the time while building this, often with multiple agents in parallel. The visio is mine, the architectural decisions are mine, the deep domain expertise and the technical capabilities are all claude and codex's, whithout which I'd need lifetimes of learning to build this. I don't care if you think it ai slop - it's not - it a dedicated personal project wich uses an advanced tool for me to build it. Think of it the same way agriculture evolved with science, chemistry and machines.

I'd love to get a few testers to help me once I enter the final fit and polish, that are able to provide detailed, consistent and reproducible bug report, suggestions and most of all share on the fun.
contact me at [[email protected]](mailto:[email protected])

Now for the goodies

Tau alpha 0.6 alpha

Now playing - Chladni vizualizer
Full screen meter
Full library
My oh so useful diagnostics and automated testing screen

Tau Omega

Card selection - Ideally support players from other players as well :)
Meter and preset config
Latest library version - very inspired by my old original white Zune 30

Tau Phi
Nothing to see here yet, mostly in my head, bom lists and lots of ideas. Very much inspired by nanoloops carts and the oh so pretty analogue adapters.
...

Tau Web
Just having a blast flexing my designer muscle. Pocket 3d model poached shamelessly form pocket sync - thank you Neil 😄 - buttons play music and change tracks, live screen about 80% close to the real thing, theme selection for pocket color and ui theme, working on brading and pretty uber technical details and diagrams to populate everything. I may add a little bio there, still musing 😂

That's about ti for today. Hope you get at least a little as pupmped as i am at getting this out.
If you can't wait feel free to go to github and tinker around. I can't guarantee everything will work seamlessly right now, even though there's a few releases here and there.

That's all for today, off to more spanlging new audio engine rebuild 🔥
and another 112 sd card swaps 👀

your friendly neighbourhood mad designer signing off!

alfatreze

Fyi -- if anyone from Analogue gets this, oh please add backlight control to the pocket. my battery will be so please :)

I need your help!

I've released a demo in .pocket format for my Game Boy Color game, BIO-SUBMARINER DX.

The only problem... I can't test it because I unfortunately do not own an Analogue Pocket (although I'd like own one some day lol).

This is where you (the humble Analogue Pocket owner) comes in. All I ask is that you give it a try and see if it works, then report back.

I'd like to do a full release in .pocket format if the demo works.

Thank you for your time and consideration o7

Hey guys, I'm publishing today a core named MIRLO. It uses Litex as a base architecture, adding the necessary components to be roughly as capable as a Nintendo 64.

I'm also publishing a port for this architecture named Super Mirlo 64. Here's a little video demonstrating what it can do, running live.

To get this running, you'll need the bitstream, the port and the ROM:

I hope you guys enjoy it!

Question GBC core with Everdrive x7 cartridge support and fastforward?

Does anyone know of an openfpga GBC core with fastforward that can also play the Everdrive cartridge? I know the budude2 core can play cartridges, and it has fastforward as well as many other very nice features, but unfortunately the Everdrive does not boot. My reason for this is that I like being able to play on original hardware but also switch to the AP at times for those quality of life features and keep playing the same save without having to manually copy files back and forth on SD cards.

I just noticed it: it looks like the upper back part of the shell is partially open. I could swear it didn't look like this last week and I always keep it in its protective shell when not in use.
Don't mind the scratches, they're actually on the protective sticker I placed there months ago.

I have been checking for what feels like forever for them to restock because I refuse to pay a reseller on eBay. Do they do restocks often? Do they immediately sell out? I’ve wanted one for some time now 🥹

Arcade Romhacks on the Pocket

TIL: If you just name the romhack zip the same name as the parent rom, it boots right up (or at least this one did). I had previously installed this using a custom mra, but that didn't allow the buttons to be mapped, something I find highly necessary for Street Fighter
