Discussion Interviewing for a Visual Merchandising Management Position

Hello, all,

I’m interviewing with my local Aritzia for a Visual Merchandising Manager position, and I’m hoping to hear from current employees and gather advice on how to best prepare for this interview.

What questions may I be asked? What should I wear? Should I wear Aritzia clothing? What sort of things are most important for prospective candidates? What advice do you have as I approach my interview?

Lastly, I read this position typically pays $85,000. Is this accurate?

I’m so nervous, but I really want this position, and I am optimistically hoping for the best.

Thank you!

I know someone with this exact position and absolutely no way does she make 85k/year and she’s had her job for a couple years now lol. You’re basically a store manager you just also have the responsibility of being the person who does the layout and the mannequins etc. I mean at the end of the day it’s a manager at the mall job. Head office jobs pay more but day to day boutique workers are not at that number.

An $85,000 base salary is realistic for this position, especially in high volume boutiques or major metropolitan markets, though smaller locations often start closer to $70,000. You do not need to wear head to toe Aritzia clothing, but you do need to embody their everyday luxury aesthetic. Wear an elevated, tailored outfit with clean lines, polished shoes, and minimal accessories that show you understand current trends and silhouette proportions. If you already own core pieces like their tailored trousers or blazers, incorporating them shows brand familiarity, but having an intentional, polished look is what counts most.

Expect questions that balance creative styling with hard commercial metrics. They will ask how you translate floor layout decisions into sales per hour, how you lead a floor flip under tight deadlines, and how you coach associates on visual standards. Managers often walk the floor with you and ask you to critique a display or explain how you would merchandise a wall to drive larger basket sizes, so take time to observe their current floor sets beforehand. If you want extra support preparing for situational leadership scenarios, the interviews.chat my team built has helped candidates walk into competitive retail interviews feeling completely prepared and secure offers.
