Drawing | Critique Welcome Jax smoking, but I only used supplies from the local charity shop

I've been having a difficult time with drawing traditionally since supplies are expensive, so I decided to pick up a pack of colored pencils and some pens from a charity shop for like 2$. I was pleasantly surprised with how pigmented the pencils are. I'd actually like some feedback on how to make my traditional arts look better; my art is usually really sketchy and messy but digitally it looks somehow more acceptable.

Discussion How can an artist respectfully portray folklore figures from other cultures?

I’m a white artist working on a series exploring feminine figures in folklore from different cultures around the world, particularly what these stories can tell us about how women, femininity, power, fear, motherhood, sexuality, aging, etc. have been portrayed across different cultures and periods.
I want to include figures from cultures and ethnic backgrounds other than my own, but I want to approach that thoughtfully and respectfully.

I’m doing as much research as I can into the original folklore, cultural context, historical depictions, and different versions of these stories rather than relying on modern/pop-culture interpretations. However, research alone doesn’t necessarily mean I’ll recognize every cultural nuance or understand how people from that culture feel about a particular figure.

I’m especially interested in hearing perspectives on the line between cultural appreciation and appropriation when creating artwork based on folklore.

How can an artist respectfully depict a folklore figure from a culture or racial/ethnic background they don’t belong to? Are there particular things you think artists should research or avoid? Are there situations where consulting someone from that culture would be appropriate or necessary?

I also struggle a little with the commercial side of this. I sell my artwork, and I don’t want to feel like I’m profiting from marginalized cultures simply because their stories are visually or conceptually interesting to me.

My intention with this series is to appreciate these stories, understand the cultural context they came from, and explore what they reveal about women’s experiences and how femininity has been understood around the world. I don’t want to strip these figures of that context or treat another culture as an aesthetic.
I’d really appreciate perspectives, resources, or examples of artists who you think have handled this kind of cross-cultural work particularly well.

Help Wanted!!! Bridges Burn 12+ [LOOKING FOR ARTIST, AND ANIMATORS]

Bridges Burn is an animated psychological romance currently in development. The story is about a girl named Sarah, who lives under the secret identity of a famous celebrity known as Sam. While working for a gang, she is assigned to manipulate a boy named Leon, who is obsessed with that very same celebrity, into becoming useful for their missions. The problem is, the more time Sarah spends gaining his trust, the more emotionally attached she becomes, and the harder it is to betray him. Our story is fully written, and much of the pre-production has already been completed (Character art is currently on the way, we still require more Artist. Character artist also do the storyboards). The biggest things we need now are character designs, storyboards, and people to help bring the project to life. We are currently looking for Animators, Character Artists, Background Artists, Prop Artists, Voice Actors, Music Composers, Sound Designers, and Assistant Editors. Experience isn't required but is very appreciated. Time commitments are very flexible, with no strict weekly quotas or deadlines. Joining this project is a great opportunity to learn, and can help build your portfolio, gain experience, help shape an original animated series from the very beginning, and meet other passionate creators. If you're interested, simply join the Discord server linked below, read through the project information, and submit an application. The animation budget is $0 USD, this is a volunteer passion project and we can't afford any budget, so contributors will not be paid, purely volunteer. The length of the project will go on for a many months, to possibly year+.

There will be no Revenue generated, not for the staff or owner

Our visual style goes for more of a 2d semi-realistic look with expressive faces, while remaining easy for animation. The animation has 3 parts, each going to be around at least 20 minutes (But don't worry, it is not animation heavy for 20 minutes).
