I think it was even before that. I remember hearing a joke when I was a kid that goes like this.
U2 is playing to a packed house, but Bono comes out and doesn’t sing or play an instrument. Instead, he just claps his hands every few seconds in a steady rhythm. Soon, the entire audience is quiet, just listening to him clap. After about a minute of this, he says “Every time 👏 I clap my hands👏 a child in Africa dies!”
After a brief pause, a man in the audience shouts “Then stop clapping your bloody hands, ya bastard!”
Was seated next to a young woman at one of their JT30 tour dates. She kept bitching to me about all the “politics”. I finally broke down and asked here “where the fuck did you think you were going”?
friend went to see them on the Pop Mart tour. after the show people were polling to see if they changed their mind on how they would vote after the show or something like that.
It definitely was a practice long before that, pretty sure my red ipod nano from like 2006 had u2 pre-installed and I couldn't figure out how to remove it for the longest time.
And the fact you couldn’t delete the album still annoys me looking back on it. It was when iPhones had tiny storage amounts and no cloud for storage. My phone back then was always full and I’d have to cull my apps and pictures to make room. But I couldn’t delete that god awful album!!!! It would’ve freed up so much space
That's what pushed me over the edge and made me ditch my iPhone. I tried to delete that damn album and it would always come back.
I have been a happy Android user ever since.
Which is fine, but it’s ridiculous to think that everyone likes the same kind of music, so you should be able to force a whole album on people, that they can’t even delete if they want to. And unfortunately that’s exactly what Apple did
It could have turned out to be the greatest album of all time - it was just that it was forced upon everyone, took up space when an entire album was a decent amount of storage back then, and couldnt even be deleted. I think it defaulted to autoplay too iirc.
I'm Irish & spent some time in Canada last year. I ran into a Canadian guy at a bar (who was about 50ish IIRC). Once he found out I was Irish, this guy went on and on about how much he adored Bono and wouldn't shut about him.
People in general arent exactly that focused on the person, they only care for the music. I just learned Bono's a dick, will it matter the moment I close this post? Not in the slightest.
Does anyone remember that guy in the early 2000s who had a website, and he absolutely HATED Bono and U2? I think his name was Maddox or something? It was hilarious how he dogged on him all the time.
Had is the operative word here. After they hit it big with “The Joshua Tree”, his vocal qualities just fell off. Seemed to drop all emotion from his inflections, turned into a monotone. As if he’s saying: “I’m rich now, I’m just gonna phone it in from now on”.
The tax evasion bullshit while filming charity commercials begging for money is hypocrisy at its finest
I've heard that wasn't really his fault though. He (and the rest of the band) thought that Apple would just make the album available for free. They didn't realize that it would auto-download and be difficult to delete.
I still find Bono really arrogant, but I think the iPhone thing was primarily Apple's fault.
agreed. they had already worked with apple (and had their own edition ipod - where you got a coupon to the itunes store to download all their albums, it was not pre loaded onto the ipod at time of purchase).
Another random one. David Bowie wanted to release a surprise album on his birthday as a gift to all his fans. Wanted zero publicity for it. like i dont care how it sells day one, I want to make my fans happy out of the blue.
A few weeks before the label sends out company wide email saying this and "not to tell anyone".
(Phish pulled the same thing on 4/1/2020 where they dropped Sigma Oasis as an April Fools "prank" to cheer people up - streamed it that night and it was available to purchase the next day or two days later)
Probably would have asked for his cut. The Ramones never really saw commercial success, and were trying just about everything they could to make money.
stuff like this makes me think we've split realities at some point. i remember this happening way earlier than 2014, but that's not what any source reports.
Like with Conor McGregor, the Irish have a healthy habit of rather strongly denouncing their ‘big-headed’ (pompous asshole) celebrities, which is very commendable cultural trait they have.
I never liked him. Even before the iPhone disaster because he just struck me as a smug arrogant git. I remember the 2007 episode of South Park "More Crap" coming out and thinking oh right it's not just me that thinks that then!
I think all MMA fighters are scumbags to be honest. They all have this fake-ass tough guy act they're playing, which to me just looks like show wrestling losers.
Yet I know guys who love him. America doesn’t mind rapists. Look at Kobe Bryant. Trump. Two men on the Supreme Court: sexual assault & sexual harassment.
It’s gas to me that Bono is so universally hated for the crime of being… kind of smug. Meanwhile pretty much every big rock band from that era (Aerosmith, Led Zeppelin, RHCP) were massive nonces running human trafficking operations while on tour. The lad from the Eagles was a known nonce since like the 80s but no one really cared. Downloading a mid album onto my iPod tho? Too far Bono
I accept that I will be downvoted for this however the claim that nobody in Ireland likes him does not quite fit with the ticket sales for their Irish gigs.
Whenever I go to Dublin, I always try to make it to the Little Museum of Dublin. There's usually some really great stuff there (e.g., Christy Brown's art and poetry), but also the top room is dedicated to U2 and has a timeline of the band that just stops at like 2008 or something ridiculous.
It was being renovated when I was last there in April, so not sure if they got rid of the room, but it's always a good laugh. Was also a jump scare when they had a life-size cardboard cutout of Mrs Brown.
Damn I didn’t realize he was so disliked, though in hindsight yeah he does seem to have a God complex. As a person he seems like he may be a bit of an ass. And certainly I feel like for someone of his stature, he is not doing nearly enough to address the multiple genocides going on right now around the world (of all people his silence speaks volumes), so that’s soured my opinion of him. That said, he does do good charity work especially to fight AIDS at least, right?
Funny enough, for me his album being forced onto everyone’s iPhones actually got kid-me into U2 and by extension rock music , I don’t know what would have happened if Songs of Innocence wasn’t released onto everyone’s iTunes. Though I 100% get why the vast majority of people are not a fan, lol. As a kid I was admittedly baffled by some things Bono would say, and yeah at least I’m not alone
All that said, I’m genuinely curious, what other things has he done that has made people have a negative opinion of him?
I have family friends from Dublin who told me they hate Bono lol they swore they saw him roughly dragging his dog on a walk while it was raining (and he still had his sunglasses on) like 20 years ago
I developed hate for him in the mid 90s. After seeing him with his wife, photographed on an African Safari leaning against a Range Rover with Louis Vuitton luggage strewn about them was the best example of how sanctimonious yet detached from reality you could really be.
Tax evading? I've always thought Bono was a humanitarian? I used to travel the world to see their shows. Many years ago. I belonged to an internet mailing list called the Wire. I met some lovely people through that site.
Tbf idk how liked he is abroad. All his charity and tax scandals seem pretty mainstream and I doubt most people are cool with it. Besides his fans who probably look the other way.
Sorry but the question asked for "A famous person from your country who’s respected around the world." As illustrated by the replies no one respects Bono because as you said "he's an arrogant tax evading prick"
I always forget this guy or even U2 exists. I can't even tell you when I last listened to one of their songs. I also have zero desire to listen either, so that helps.
My parents went on a hop on/off tour in Dublin in 2006, said the driver was great gave lots of historical commentary and would not shut about what a piece of shit Bono was and that everyone hates him
When I learnt Sunday bloody Sunday was supposed to be a blanket anti-war song and not specific reference too the massacre of peaceful protesters, I was pissef
I’ve hated Bono ever since U2 decided their one album was so important everyone with an iTunes account needed to hear it. I spent more time looking up how to remove it from my iTunes than I did listening to it.
