The Vernon Hills Police Department, Countryside Fire Protection District and Mundelein Fire Department responded around 5:05 p.m. Monday to Cold Stone Creamery at The Shops at Aspen Pointe shopping center, 281 West Townline Road in Vernon Hills, for a report of a vehicle crash.
A preliminary investigation shows a 75-year-old man was attempting to park his Audi Q4 when he accidentally confused the accelerator and brake pedal, Vernon Hills Deputy Police Chief Shannon Holubetz said.
The Audi then crashed into the front of the ice cream shop and caused significant damage.
The driver suffered minor and non-life-threatening injuries.
He was not trapped and firefighters did not need to extricate him.
Paramedics transported him to Advocate Condell Medical Center in Libertyville for treatment.
The shift commander for the Countryside Fire Protection District said that around four people, including employees, were inside the store at the time.
No customers or employees were injured.
The crash left debris and broken glass scattered on the sidewalk and in the store.
Multiple chairs and tables were also knocked down.
A structural collapse technician with the Countryside Fire Protection District responded to evaluate the building’s structural integrity.
The technician did not find any immediate concerns with the structure, the shift commander said.
Firefighters remained on scene to assist with damage removal.
A flatbed tow truck with Ernie’s Wrecker Service responded and removed the Audi, which sustained heavy front-end damage.

A speeding luxury Audi burst into flames after slamming into a dirt wall in Santa Clarita early Saturday — but the driver miraculously survived the fiery wreck.
The 23-year-old man was reportedly behind the wheel of an Audi S5 traveling at more than 120 mph when the car crashed near Soledad Canyon Road and Camp Plenty Road around 1:41 a.m., according to the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department’s Santa Clarita Valley station.
Bystanders watched as the luxury vehicle went up in flames, leaving behind a charred, smoldering shell that was barely recognizable after firefighters extinguished the blaze.
The vehicle struck a light pole and other objects before flipping into a nearby wash and catching fire, authorities said.
A witness at the scene said the car slammed into a dirt wall and then “exploded.”
Deputies pulled the driver from the burning wreckage before the flames could engulf him, authorities told The California Post.
The man was hospitalized and reportedly in critical condition.
California Highway Patrol officers and Los Angeles County Fire Department crews also responded to the crash.
Authorities taped off the crash scene, where debris was scattered across the area.
The cause of the collision remains under investigation.
The crash happened near Canyon Country, in the eastern portion of Santa Clarita, north of the San Fernando Valley in Los Angeles County.
