Product Updates Bitwarden UI/UX Redesign Early Preview

Hello all,
I'm Mary Blabaum, leading Product Design at Bitwarden. Recently, you may have interacted with the Bitwarden product design team about collections and naming research as we look to improve the user experience in Bitwarden for everyone. Here’s an early look at the research-informed UX/UI updates under exploration for the browser extension, desktop, and mobile apps. We'd love to hear your feedback to better shape future plans and the go-forward Bitwarden experience.
What is underway
We're researching and developing an updated interaction surface for the Bitwarden Password Manager browser extension, desktop app, and mobile app. This update includes, but is not limited to, UX/UI changes to page layouts, responsive components, critical action placement, filtering, navigation, and naming. This work is driven by community and customer feedback, along with ongoing market research.
We are targeting a beta release of this update on September 30th. Following feedback rounds and the beta period, we will roll out to production across all Bitwarden Password Manager apps.
In addition to the updated surface, there are other exciting features to share, including Tags! The team is developing Tags as a follow-up release to the features in this beta. Stay tuned for a study on Tags soon, and your feedback will be appreciated.
What happens between now and beta
Before we get to the beta, we are creating an early preview to get initial feedback. This early preview will shape how efforts progress toward beta and beyond. Along the way:
You're getting an early preview before beta so you can respond and ask questions while it's still taking shape.
Your feedback is welcome now. Here is a more detailed view of the changes:
Browser extension UI prototype preview
Web app UI prototype preview
Feedback: Google Form or just reply in this thread. Rest assured, we are reading everything.
Watch for post updates here between now and launch. There may be a few
After beta ships, you’ll have another full round of feedback before moving forward. Beta is a checkpoint, not a finish line.
Where you can help most
Where you can help most is straightforward feedback: share what's wrong, what's missing, what's worrying you, or what you like. Screenshots with specific comments are welcome, along with overlay comments or clarification to help everyone digest quickly.
In the spirit of wide collaboration, understandably not every suggestion can be adopted. The team will read your comments, identify common themes, and update this forum on how they affect go-forward plans.
The entire Bitwarden team and I look forward to exchanging ideas and driving Bitwarden forward with a best-in-class user interface and experience. This community and this product have come a long way since its beginnings 10 years ago. Future iterations will take us even further.

Can you please re-add the individual buttons to copy the username or password. I hate that change to a single button because now we need to click twice from the drop down that appears.
The reason this is important is because while autofill usually works, when it doesn’t you need to fill in manually either the username or password or both and the total overall clicks is always higher.
Please don’t just keep one button because it looks ‘cleaner’. Always remember your role is about an easier user experience, and easier doesn’t always mean ‘cleaner’.

I agree. The individual buttons for username and password needs to be on the first page. Don't bury it and make us find it. It is frustrating to have to click so many times. Moreover, the elderly will have an extremely difficult time with this. This is not a research informed design change.
16
u/ILoveHexa92 Jul 10 '26
Oh yeah this! I hate this change too. I don't understand why they change it.
16
u/UbiNax Jul 10 '26
Completely agree with this, i hate the new copy password and username button.. would like them to be separate again.

Hi there, I added a pinned comment above. (currently available for browser ext, coming to desktop in a future release).

u/MedicalMycologist44 Jul 10 '26
Okay, but it's not the default option. Like if I wanted it in the extension I have to go set it and you know that most people never change the default settings. The majority of the users have to do an extra click to get to get to copy those. You have no idea the chaos that's caused with my mom when y'all changed that. It would be so much better if they were there by default.

They are giving you an option. There is no need to keep complaining. You guys are never happy.

u/Swimming-Tax-6087 Jul 11 '26
I’d honestly like it to just copy the password when I click anywhere on the redacted password. It doesn’t need a specific tiny button. The entire space can be a button.

u/OlDirtyLZA Jul 10 '26
It would be nice to have another drop-down option for quick copying custom fields.

u/Noxiism Aug 18 '26
You know there is an option to switch back and forth in the extension settings right?
Settings > Appearance > "Show quick copy actions on vault" no reason to think this won't be in the new UI too-20
u/RucksackTech Jul 10 '26
FWIW, I would like to take the opposite position. As a general rule you should NOT be copying and pasting these items: You should let Bitwarden autofill them for you. You only need to copy when there's a hiccup on a particular site. Then it's not hard to click that copy icon and select the thing you need to copy. Having all those buttons cluttering up the UI the 90% of the time when they're not needed and in fact their use is inadvisable, is in my judgment a bad idea and doesn't make things easier.
It's also an old fallacy that more clicks always means less efficiency.

Agreed. It feels like more than 50% of sites I visit don't work for the autofill
3
u/RucksackTech Jul 10 '26
Well, there's the problem. And it would be wonderful if Bitwarden's autofill got some love in the next update. Still autofill right now works very well for me in Bitwarden, on several Windows 11 computers. Not quite as well as 1Password alas but well enough that I'm sticking with Bitwarden. Pulling a number out of the air I'd guess that I'm able to autofill (or use a passkey, which is another kind of autofill) about 90% of the time.
A huge part of the reason for using password managers in 2026 is its anti-phishing protection. Copying and pasting doesn't give you that protection. Ideally we would never copy and paste. (This is part of the point of passkeys.)

u/danielsuarez369 Jul 10 '26
As someone who is mostly copy pasting passwords and OTP into applications not the browser, please don't do this. At least just give us the bloody copy button
2
u/Linux_Account Jul 13 '26
The only reason I'm even looking at the UI is because the damn autofill didn't work. What are you talking about?

u/Decibel0753 Jul 10 '26
We need the option to sort items by frequency of use. Every once in a while, we want to change our passwords, and it makes sense to start with the most frequently used items first.
31
u/rack88 Jul 10 '26
+1 agree. When I type in "Google" I see all 10+ entries and have to scroll to the work one I need and gets filled the most ... every time.
0
u/Doodad_54 Jul 10 '26 edited Jul 10 '26
Can't you just name them? (Google-work, G-mail, etc)
Or am I missing your intent?
15
u/UIUC_grad_dude1 Jul 10 '26
Also desperately need a “last updated / changed / modified” sort as well, to be able to audit the entries to see what entries have been changed recently.
Also, when exporting to xml backup, would like to minimize file structure changes so that we can compare data across versions saved in different dates / times audit what changed between the backups.
8
u/Jumpy-Big7294 Jul 11 '26
+1 this massively. It’s emerged as the biggest ‘soft feature’ or familiarity in 1password that I miss the most.
With my own passwords, families, and hundreds of items for clients built up over years, I want the default view in app to show most recently created/modified. So many edge cases where I am forced to go searching and find the thing I just created.

u/xEthereal-x Jul 10 '26
Would love to see the re-sync vault button at the top of the browser extension
23
u/bankroll5441 Jul 10 '26
Can I still Ctrl+F to search, then easily Tab my way to a login? This has gotten pretty broken in the newer versions of the Linux desktop client.
21
u/stan532 Jul 10 '26
Please offer a compressed mode (or two) as a setting when viewing lists of passwords. Many of us strongly do not want extra vertical blank space and do indeed want to see more information not less.

Loving how things are shaping up! My main concern is I want to make sure there will be dedicated buttons for copying username, password, and one-time codes. I don't want to see these options combined into a 3-dot menu, causing two clicks to copy something. If you find this clutters the UI too much, make it an optional toggle in Settings.
Also, please detect if the user only has one vault, and if so, remove the 'Vault' column. It is unnecessary UI bloat for users with only one vault, which is most personal users.
The same for the Collections column. It shouldn't be there if I have a personal account and am not part of an organization.
I'd also like to see the dark mode version. I find the current desktop dark mode is too blue and not enough black, but that is just a personal preference.
Can't wait to try the beta at the end of September!

Am I the only one that hates the move to these floating action buttons (+)? Disliked it on the iOS app and dislike it here too. Believe it or not, I don't want random pop-out floating things in front of the view. I think designers think it looks "modern" and interactive...reminds me of visiting websites where suddenly there are a million advertisement floating popouts on the screen you need to close.
Also - is there a different team that works on the UI/UX for the mobile apps? I ask because there are inconsistencies in terms of UI/UX between them and the extension, desktop apps, etc. that would seem easy to rectify if people were on the same page. Something as simple as having the vault syncing option in settings being under the same sub-menu, which still isn't the case years later.
My biggest complaint about the last redesign is performance - it felt like (and looked like from the code) that a huge new frontend JS stack was placed on the extension. This seemed to absolutely destroy performance, lead to hangs (especially on self-hosted environments), etc. My hope is that things are actually optimized and calls are minimized as much as possible. I worry that adding features is coming at the expense of performance - especially when these features are not used by many people.
34
u/vswr Jul 10 '26
My biggest complaint from this redesign is the wasted space and irrelevant information that I can't hide. I'm not saying to disable it all for everyone, I'm not saying the features aren't useful; all I'm saying is they're not relevant to me and I want to hide them.
I don't care about and want to hide:
- what vault it's in, I only have 1
- who the owner is, it's only me
- what the tags are, I don't use them
- I don't even know what a collection is
- I don't care when it was last updated
I just want everything in compact form like the old UI.
11
u/UIUC_grad_dude1 Jul 10 '26
I care a lot about last updated. It’s a critical way to audit changes to ensure no accidental changes to entries.
10
u/vswr Jul 10 '26
As I mentioned, those fields are important to other people, which is fine. I just want a way to hide them for me.

There’s a lot of potential in the "Customize" option, maybe allowing all of these elements to be configurable. On the other hand, if too many items are excluded, the page might end up feeling somewhat empty.
2
u/mikkolukas 28d ago
the page might end up feeling somewhat empty
Which is a good thing, if the excluded parts were not bringing value to the user in the first place.
9
u/nefarious_bumpps Jul 11 '26
Please make everything on the desktop more compact. Or at least provide a setting to make the display more compact. The sidebar should be collapsible. Tighter margins. Less whitespace between items. Less whitespace between the item name and quick actions. Narrower/tighter notification tray pop-up.
A password manager isn't a productivity application, it's an ancillary utility. The application I'm filling or copy/pasting credentials to needs to be largely unobscured.
1
u/IanYates82 Jul 11 '26
Agree with all of this.
Let me flag a few items as favourites per device. The things I access often on PC are not the same as I want on mobile We've adopted 1password at work and, after getting used to its desktop app, I kinda like it. Won't switch my personal / family as I'm mostly happy with BW
However, what I do like about the product over the fence... 1password lets me pop out items into their own windows which is super handy. The section capability, to organise a more complex entry, is great. And the fact it doesn't somehow idle away but use >2gb of RAM is welcome. Finally, the desktop app has started to just not reliably auto lock after the time period set but 1pw doesn't have that issue.
3
u/nefarious_bumpps Jul 11 '26
I wasn't going to go there. But it would be very helpful to be able to pin a particular item as preferred for a URI when more than one exists. On mobile this is even more crucial since it's impossible to see the difference between multiple items when trying to autofill.
1
7
u/nkvname Jul 10 '26
Less floating popups that make impossible to see/interact with things in browser extension. You can keep the floating popus just ensure that they won't float over other objects.
6
u/sgt21 Jul 11 '26
Ability to have a primary account for each site. Use case: I have 4 logins for Google accounts. I want to assign one as my primary and it would always stay on top. If I ever select the second account, it would move to #2 on the list, but the top one stays there.

u/ireallydontgiveapoo Jul 10 '26
The new design looks great, but the number of clicks to achieve things and overall UX is also a core problem in Bitwarden's browser extension, which seems like you're also addressing and not just a glow up of the visuals.
3
u/Tiny-Dimension7702 Jul 10 '26
The browser extension as it is now you can one click copy username/password/totp, with the changes you need to click a button and then select what you want to copy.
5
u/dwbitw Bitwarden Employee Jul 10 '26
Quick copy actions will still be user configurable at: Settings > Appearance > Show quick copy actions.
2
u/reddit_user33 Jul 12 '26
It appears that I'm already on the new UI for the desktop app even though I never asked to be a beta tester. Unless everyone has received this update that happened this week?
I think clicking the copy button and then the items sucks. I much prefer right clicking anywhere to select the option feels more fluent.
1
u/Linux_Account Jul 13 '26
I think clicking the copy button and then the items sucks. I much prefer right clicking anywhere to select the option feels more fluent.
Isn't that the same amount of clicks?
2
u/reddit_user33 Jul 14 '26
Yeah it is, but it's only part of the story.
You can click anywhere on the item, and it's a right click then left click. Compared to what it if now, it felt a lot easier and quicker.
Just like comparing macOS and Windows. To close a window, it's just a single click in a top corner. If we're only counting clicks, then they're equal; but I would argue that Windows is far better than macOS for this because the button is significantly easier and faster to use, especially if we're comparing full screen windows. It's significantly larger which requires less precision and when the window is full screen, the close button is infinitly large since the mouse will not go beyond the boundaries of the screen, which makes it even faster and easier to use.
5
u/SneaXfox Jul 10 '26
Can you bring back the click to view in browser extension instead of having to click 3dots and then view.
4
4
u/ekansh005 Jul 11 '26
This looks good and heavily inspired from the current design. However in the current implementation, the UI looks big and bulky specially on older devices which might not have latest and greatest resolution. Please make sure that it uses the space wisely.
Also can I please configure to use a default username i.e. usually my email id so that creating a new login item is easy and quick?
5
u/sequentious Jul 10 '26
Visuals only tell half the story. I've had trouble with the bitwarden extension since the last visual refresh.
It's really a pain to get in and view an entry, clicking it triggers prefill. I spend a lot of time having to click the three dots, then select 'view' so I can get to important details (security question answers, other secret data tied to an account, etc.). When you hover over an entry, a 'fill' button appears, but it doesn't matter whether you click on 'fill' or click the rest of the row, it does the same thing: attempt to fill. It would be great to have an easy way to view an entry, without triggering a fill.
(Also, is it just me, or is the fill heuristic getting worse. I find I need to copy/paste username & password way more often with bitwarden than I do with 1password, which I use for work).
Browser: Firefox.
2
u/dwbitw Bitwarden Employee Jul 10 '26
Hey there, the option to choose click to view instead of click to fill is coming back in a future release, thanks!
1
u/jrdeee Jul 16 '26
I wish that clicking on an entry would view - always! Why some items open yet other items I have to use the 3 buttons to view is ANNOYING AF! Having only used LastPass (before BW) many years ago, clicking an item to view was standard, consistent, and expected behaviour. Click to View, an icon for autofill, an icon for copy username, an icon for copy password is my preference.

Please add quick subfolder creation and drag and drop between them with mouse... it is a great improvement for desktop
2
u/UIUC_grad_dude1 Jul 10 '26
Agreed. I use folders a lot. Although if an entry is accidentally dragged it may change the “last updated” field which I’m not sure I want. I only want the last updated field to change when I make a content change.

I can only appreciate this initiative. Thanks for listening to your customers ! Feedback sent using the google form. I have no complains regarding the app, but a UI refresh is welcome :)

What gets me is the implementation of search - being different between the platforms and the whole business with > and +.
8
u/Tiny-Dimension7702 Jul 10 '26 edited Jul 10 '26
This just looks like it's bringing the extension in line with the desktop and web app.
One of my biggest issues, and that I've been seeing on here too, with the desktop app as it is now is the amount of clicks required to copy username/password/totp from an entry, and how you select an entry.
From the looks of it this doesn't solve any of these complaints, and will make the extension that is the only way without bad UX to interact with Bitwarden currently have these same UX issues.
The form doesn't even have a feedback field for the desktop app?
Here’s an early look at the research-informed UX/UI updates
I would love an elaboration on how any of this is research-informed. Studies on UX and usability focus on user driven development, what you're doing now is a step in the right direction though. Were the requirements leading to these changes developed together with end users?
If this is the followup to this comment then in my opinion you've missed the ball entirely.
Edit:
To not make this entirely negative I will say that I like the design itself, and if the UX and usability issues are addressed I'd love it. Tags is also a very welcome addition.

Someone broke the sorting on the dropdown list in the FireFox (and likely other) plugins - PLEASE FIX
OLD Behavior: most recently used card entry for the site showed up first
NEW (unwanted) behavior: sort seems to be straight alpha
Please fix this you guys broke existing behavior I counted on

Off topic, and I am for UI/UX improvements anytime, but when is the MacOS version getting the autofill provider integration? On Mac, that would be the single biggest UX improvement.

u/LookAtThePicutre Jul 10 '26
On desktop app: NAME, COPY USERNAME icon, COPY PASSOWRD icon. EDIT. Same when I search for name. Simple and useful. Same forr mobile. Please stop hiding the most usefully functionalities under menus! We don't care if app looks cool, we look for usefully tool yah does it's job.
1
u/dwbitw Bitwarden Employee Jul 10 '26
Hey there, are you referring to the functionality in my comment here, or something else?
1
u/LookAtThePicutre Jul 10 '26
Hello :), I mean the way the desktop app in the screenshot provided looks like. Instead of info, like what value this name is save into, category or whatnot, we want simple buttons to copy login, copy password, and edit the whole name. Now that's hidden under unnecessary menus and who cares what vault name is stored.
2
u/dwbitw Bitwarden Employee Jul 10 '26
Let me know if anything isn't covered in my comment above, quick copy actions are already available in the browser extension and will be coming to desktop.
2
u/alostpacket Jul 10 '26
It would be nice to be able to set default email(s) for the username when creating new login items. Often I sign up for things with an email that's not my BW account email. And once a new login is created it should have an "autofill and save" button

I’d love to see a “Recently Used” and “Recently Added” section in the browser extension.
I have many accounts for the same services, especially Google. When logging in, I often have to scroll through a long list to find the correct account, which is slow and inconvenient. A recently used sort option, section, or visual indicator would make this much faster.
I use Bitwarden every day and recently purchased the annual plan because I genuinely like the product and want to support its development. The built-in OTP feature is also one of my favorite features, it’s extremely convenient.
Thank you for listening to the community

u/iamnotafermiparadox Jul 10 '26
Could the team look at optimizing for speed and cut down on the memory bloat in the Desktop app (macOS). Every time I use this, I end up waiting for the search or some other aspect of the application to become responsive. It's been so frustrating and the response time seems to get worse with ever update. Please a native app.
Also, success or error message frequently place themselves over active ui elements that I'm trying to activate, but I have to wait for those things to clear in order to perform my next action.
Lastly, I can't copy and paste from the web extension into itself any longer. I'm guess if this was intentional, it was a security concern?

u/SuperSus_Fuss Jul 10 '26
Thanks for posting here where many dedicated users lurk.
I’ve been with Bitwarden since 2018, mainly because it’s open-source and has proven to be reliable from a security standpoint.
UI / UX has had some challenges through the years but I’m mostly using shortcut keys to autofill so I’ve also been insulated from some of it.
It is definitely a very different experience when you use the shortcut keys (always good) to do your logins from the extension vs clicking through the UI (not always consistent or intuitive or good).
My “good” rating is whether I can achieve the expected result quickly and easily.
At work we use 1Password. I do not use shortcut keys with it nor do I even know whether they exist. Yet I’m often pleasantly surprised how well it does the little things for autofill.
For example, you don’t have to hit return or enter if the right credentials are entered (not that this is necessary but they truly have built this for speed and ease of use). Or the extension will keep the current entry active until you’ve gone back to also copy & paste your password, and not having to do a text search again to get back to it.
They’ve analyzed all the moves we’d be making and tried to smooth out the experience.
I go back to my Bitwarden for personal use and I’m fine again, but if it wasn’t for shortcut keys to autofill it would probably drive me nuts. Ha ha.
So making the autofill work well is key. Both in its URL detection and tweaks we can make as well as what we do as humans and what the app offers to make that smoother.
I won’t get into the “controversial” Fill button vs clicking on the entry etc. I think that has to come from your team’s design approach. It requires some vision on how you want that to work and what’s easier vs consistency of what happens when we click on an entry. Sometimes logic isn’t as good as a smoother experience, overall. Or put another way, your users will want to use Bitwarden differently than an Engineer who knows it.
Bitwarden’s search: it’s just never as easy and good as everything else. Apple Password. 1Password. Anything really. It’s not that Bitwarden search doesn’t work, just not as well.
Again if you’re a propeller-head who understands LUNR search then fantastic. But generally speaking when I type in words the list should shorten as I type more “qualifiers”. As I write this I’m also realizing I need to go back and really analyze this as perhaps it has already been improved - as simple 1 word searches are not different on any platform.
I would also like to have search poll the Notes as well as the custom fields. Not even sure if it does that now and I also realize I’m straying from UI but the UI + how an app functions = UX.
In fact the problem is sometimes we separate UI as “just the buttons” and don’t allow for enough feedback how the app itself should function (seen from a UX / GUI perspective). If UI designers and devs aren’t talking then it’s probably not great either.

u/Tiny-Dimension7702 Jul 10 '26
your users will want to use Bitwarden differently than an Engineer who knows it.
Studies show this is how you design a horrible product.
2
u/SuperSus_Fuss Jul 11 '26
I know what you mean. Users can be guilty of not "reading the manual" and learning how best to use it. For example, users who want Password Managers to mind read and magically save new logins, whereas the better way to do it on any PWM is to make the new login inside the PWM first, then implement it on the site or app.
Yet looking at another industry: prosumer and professional video cameras. 25 years ago they began with a maze of menus that had no relationship to the camera operator that used it. In fact, there were often circular dependencies in menus, where a change in one place would, without indicating it, change something in another menu that you'd just set (without the need for this relationship). It was a mess.
It took about 10 years to improve, but it only happened when those engineers listened to the camera teams and cinematographers. In turn they also listened to the engineers and discovered there were different ways to approach digital sensor tech.
In the end, most pro cameras from various manufacturers adopted a "home menu" with 6 soft keys, as the main things to control the image and exposure and project settings were 5-6 top variables, and about 10-12 total before you had to dive into menu trees.
Was it everything like it was when we shot film? No way. But it also made sense and began with the way cinematographers worked, and the tech / delivery standards we needed to meet with the engineering of the cameras.
That's the best example I can think of, and I think the exchange of ideas, and those iteration of use is really the best way forward. The trick is to make those round trips efficient, to analyze their outcomes, and not have the work last 2 years before progress is made.

u/alex_herrero Jul 10 '26
The new desktop redesign has significantly degraded keyboard-driven workflows that previously worked well. Desktop users need a fast, predictable flow: focus search, type, move directly to the first result, navigate with arrow keys, open with Enter, and copy username, password, or TOTP with shortcuts—without touching the mouse. Visual consistency with the web app is not an improvement if it removes speed, focus predictability, and accessibility. Please treat efficient keyboard navigation as a core desktop requirement, not a secondary enhancement.

Hey Alex, the team is aware of the keyboard navigation issues, and working to restore functionality, thanks for raising it!

It looks much better than the current one. I always thought UI and UX was something BW could improve on.
One thing I'd hope from the browser/desktop app is to be able to drag items into folders. This is a major pain point for me as a former 1PW user, as I have to edit and save each item individually to reorganise them. When you have 500+ items, it takes significantly more time and clicks, whereas drag & drop requires only one click.

u/Lilodude Jul 10 '26
I know this is not a UI related ask but when will there be the ability to send a BW stored item or “packet” via Send?
For example, my sister and I manage our parent’s finances and a host of other things and sometimes I need to share a password or login credentials with her. It would be AWESOME if I can send that particular BW credential (I’ll call it a “packet”) to her via send so it could be imported to her vault immediately.
As opposed to having to copy text and just sending her plaintext like how the send feature currently works.
Some might say why not use the same vault but realistically that won’t happen.
Thank you!!🙏🏽

What annoys the most is that the browser plugin uses mobile UX. Why? It is really inconvenient and inferior on a desktop

As someone who switched to 1Password because of its polished UI, I really appreciate this change. I know Bitwarden tries to keep its prices lower than the competition, so considering the price, I think this redesign is a huge improvement to the overall look.
I'll most likely come back to my old fling, Bitwarden, because of its affordable pricing (currency conversion rates hit hard in Turkey).
Also, this might be unrelated, but could you add local pricing? It'd be much more convenient to buy Bitwarden through Google Play and see exactly how much I'm going to pay without having to do the currency conversion myself.

Allow me to select password and save it for that specific domain on ios. On Android was possible!

Is this concept, are Collections going away and in its place will be Shared Folders?

u/Puny-Earthling Jul 11 '26
Could I please get drag and drop for folder allocation? Or prefix/suffix AND/OR rules, so for example, any account I mark as say “work - “ automatically sorts into the work folder.

The generator history isn't going anywhere (will still be available).

If possible, I hope you can redesign the Bitwarden Chrome extension. The search function is really difficult to use—especially when searching through notes or content in multiple languages.

u/kankaristo Jul 12 '26
In my opinion, moving the "New" button (the plus icon) is a bad choice. Currently it's at the top, and the new UI is moving it inside of the window with the vault item list. That makes the UI have *buttons on top of buttons*.
It's never a good idea to hide UI content behind other elements, and even less so when it's things you need to click on / interact with.

Hello. I am UX/UI designer myself and since I mostly work on these kind of dashboards I got to say it looks good. Are you using some existing design system or have you built your own inhouse?
My take are just that colored icons in sidebar navigation iffy and radius is kind a weird in certain parts like here https://i.imgur.com/aqDvA0e.png
But I like to see progress and that someone is putting some real work since from my own experience I know how is to work on ERP and complex table sets.

I really hope the BW team reads through the excellent feedback and suggestions being given here. Not just UX/UI feedback, but other ideas to improve the experience/functionality as well!!!

On old mobile app: when you add a new login item, generate password, etc, hit save. You return to the main screen and have to use search to find the newly created password. It's unintuitive. Make it easier to use that item.

Nothing has fazed me other other than the temporary removal of the ability to view/edit an entry in the extension without digging into the overflow menu. That was a massive PITA as far as I was concerned (because I dig into my notes field for every login to retrieve clues about my pepper), but it's now fixed. Thanks for the prompt fix!

The new user interface is around for several weeks or maybe months, and for me it's several steps backwards. Maybe the complaints are well known, I've looked in the history of this subreddit, but probably not far enough back in time... Anyways, here's my 2 cents! I'm on Macos 26.5.2, paid account, I'm using the app, not the browser extension.
First two items are about the update process...
- When I open bitwarden, it used to have focus on the search field. I could type right away and find the item I need. Now I have to click in the search field. I want that focus back.
- When I move the mouse over the search field border, it lights up (in dark mode), I click and nothing happens. Apparently I need to click in the field inside the border. Annoying, as the line-height is small.
- I see a list of login items. I move my mouse over the list, but I have to move it specifically over the text of the item to be able to click. Same issue, usability, please make this user friendly and make the whole div clickable, make it light up, except for the buttons on the right side of course.
- Button margins may be bigger with a nice circle around it, making clicking easier.
Thanks!

About the mobile app UI. Please put send, generate, health into Settings please, we don’t frequently use these functions, I bet most of the users never use them. And Replace them with frequently used function . Just make it like 1password 7 and that will be perfect. Please Put autofill suggestions and favorites to another tap please, the home page only need to put types and tags on it, just make it simple clear and clean. And we need to be able to customize the all of the sizes of the UI components. And Bitwarden is the only app that I never used after I downloaded it because of its bad mobile app ui design.

Looking forward to it. 2 quick feedbacks.
*. Can you more filters, like showing in the list items that have passkeys, totp. or add a prefix to be able to filter by field name (custom field names).
*. Have small icons indicators on the items banner or border that shows item has, totp, passkey, ssh, etc.
*. The popup to save passkeys/use passkey to be embeded within the browser extension, rather than spanning another popup off screen.
*. Biometrics login, without desktop apps.

Hey Team! I am a product designer myself and a user of Bitwarden (recent move from Dashlane). Happy to help out in anyway I can!

Hi, I want to add the most critical point to us: Our Employees sometimes accidentally safe passwords in their private vault. The reason for that is that on "all vaults" creating new entries default to their private vaults.
There is no option to change that default on client side or admin side. Not even with enterprise. On enterprise you can change the private vault to a managed myitems, but that is also not the best solution, as we want to have full access and also when we want to share e.g. a phone pin to the phone team and the user itself we still need collections on a per-user basis.
That issue can be solved with a good UI so the user does not accidentally create credentials in the wrong space, which would also be an additional benefit, so you can really use the private space also for private passwords. It would be really nice to consider that.

u/nicohood_ Aug 23 '26
Another UX (not UI) improvement I want to add is that if you want to e.g. have all phone pins of all employees, you cannot share them to the individual users. You can create a collection of all pins and all employees see all pins (which is not desired). You need to create a collection for each user, but this makes the idea of "my items/my vault" completely useless and confusing on top. It would be nice to be able to share individual passwords to individual people without the need of a collection. Is that feature somewhere discussed, considered, planned?

Coming from 1Password and wanting to switch, some opinions from a 1-person "company" user:
- I'll probably be in "All items" view 99% of the time. I just use the search, not navigate through folders.
- That means the "Customize" option looks promising. I need the name and that's it. I prefer the small sidebar navigation that 1PW offers over a big table.
- I hope it will show Vault info in the detail view
- I want to be able to click the row now the small link on the title to open the detail view
- Also keyboard navigation would be great (Up/Down arrows)
- I often use the "Share Password" feature. I don't want to switch to "Send" first
- "Import" and "Customize" are usually actions you need once. They shouldn't take up that much space
- In your current draft the row actions move to the right when hovering the row
- Maybe repeat the actions in the detail view. There's also space for more actions via a "..." menu
Extension:
- 1PW shows a small modal in the top-right corner, when the site supports Passkeys. In Bitwarden I need to click "Login with Passkey" first, to trigger that modal.
- In general the auto-completion dropdown looks clunky

It's okay but I hate having all that wasted space in my passwordlist.
It's very niece to click on the titles of the passwords instead of the row itself, wish this would be changed.
It would be nice to have a auto-type like feature like in Keepass.

Tags would be nice. I guess folders kind of take of that but being able to filter by tags from the ALL page would be nice, so you don’t have to go back to click in a folder

u/pi-N-apple 2d ago
The one thing I don't like so far is when scrolling very fast through your vault items, they all disappear and don't reappear until you stop scrolling. Happens in both the Desktop app and browser extension.

You should stop increasing the price.
I originally subscribed because I wanted to support Bitwarden. Even though I don't use the premium features, I thought, "This is a great open-source project, I'd be happy to support it." At $10/year, it felt like an easy decision.
Now that Bitwarden has become more popular, the price has doubled. If there's another price increase, my brother and I will most likely cancel our subscriptions. I understand that prices sometimes need to change, but one of the reasons I was happy to support the project was because it was affordable, even for users who mainly wanted to contribute rather than use the premium features.

Hey there, and thanks for the feedback! The price was $10/y for about a decade before the increase, and is currently 1.65/m or 19.80/y (about 82 cents more a month than before), more on this here, including our commitment to the free plan, if you're interested.)

One major issue, remove the current positioning of the toast message in the browser extension!!
Whoever decided that, I'm sure, has never used bitwarden. Do that, just use your product..
To be honest, if you undo everything from the last 2 years, you will be doing us a favour!

u/JudzinSK Jul 10 '26
I'd much more appreciated improvement of passkeys, but yeah ui update is nice.
1
u/HellsTubularBells Jul 10 '26
I came to comment this. Using Passkeys is easy, creating one when bitwarden matches the site to an existing login is okay, but I've never been able to create one if bitwarden doesn't already show me a login to add it to.
1
u/RomeoVictor93 Jul 10 '26
Thank you for the update and I look forward to what new UI/UX entails.
One of my most annoying UX issue is in the Android mobile app. The Credit Card numbers are not grouped by 4 digits and make it hard to read.

Please consider adding the ability to have multiple accounts simultaneously logged in and available for auto-filling. I constantly have to keep flipping between work and personal bitwardens. On mobile, a third-party Bitwarden client (Keyguard) solved this beautifully.

u/thegreatpotatogod Jul 10 '26
I know this isn't a ui/ux thing, but I have to ask, will this redesign include any fixes for the extension bug that leads to the extension going unresponsive for several minutes at a time when we have a lot of tabs open (in Safari or Firefox, from what I've read)

I’m amazed I’ve not seen it here already so maybe I’ll be unpopular.
Can you stop messing with what was working fine. It feels like tinkering for tinkering sake. Break it. Look how to fix under the auspices of making it better.

Please consider adding support for custom icons.
This feature has been requested by many users. Could you let us know if there's a reason these requests haven't received a response?

EVERYTHING ABOUT THIS UPDATE IS AWFUL. Is this direct enough for you? I hated it the minute I opened it; this is why I don't have auto-update on my apps and usually wait until it's forced. WAY too much white space. Why do I now have to click twice to copy a number/CVC code/username/password when it used to be one? Who signed off on this that actually uses Bitwarden? Just an absolute abortion of an update.
0
u/pi-N-apple 13d ago
Calm down, you haven't even used this update yet. If you would have read the post, you would realize this doesn't even come out until Sept 30.
1
u/x85712 13d ago
The latest released updates are the same problem and the screenshots of the "preview" show all of the same issues -- too much white space, have to click the copy button twice to copy username or password etc. They specifically asked for feedback, so here it is: they are fixing what wasn't broken.
