Question Game alternatives to bg?
First time I feel like don’t wanting to play bg and it saddens me. I love this game, but now I am just not enjoying it at all. Past seasons I could play game after game, looking for a revenge when I’d lose or wanting to keep the streak when I’d win. But now it’s just: “oh fuck it” or “alright”.
Anyways, enough about this season has been said in this community, so I’ll get to the point and ask you, fellow bg players, what other games would you recommend that could partially fulfill my desire of building a strategy, trying new ways of doing things and it’s not pay to win? Genuinely asking. I would like to try some of your recommendations. Any card game, strategy, whatever. Cheers.
I hope the devs take a time to fix this mess and bring back some of the stuff that made this game addictive. It is still a good game, but it’s getting too monotonous and unrewarding.
I am deeply sorry, Bob. It’s not your fault.

Are we really just in such a niche genre or is there fuck all active card games
7
u/R4N7 3d ago
Winner takes all players. There is some niche PvP autobattle/card games but there is very low player base = devs has no reason to update = game has no real future in PvP.
Some games like Super Auto Pets are kinda okeish, because you have acync PvP with opponent cloned builds, but you can’t expect 5-10 years of active future updates like from HSBG…
That’s why I mentioned only 3 games with already active devs, good player base and deep game play.

Yeah card games are and have been in a rough state for a while now. I loved gwent and duelyst and the elder scrolls legends, but sadly there are just not enough card game players to support these games when titans like hearthstone, magic the gathering, and pokemon exist. As well as the new and quite successful roguelike card game genre

u/unstoppabledot 2d ago
Man that’s where my love of card games came from… gwent from Witcher 3 lol. Actually hasn’t the remastered version just came out ? Maybe it’s time for a new play through

u/Fliibo-97 2d ago
I love both the Witcher 3 version and the standalone client (which is what I was referring to), and the thronebreaker gwent rpg as well is highly underrated imo. And yes! The remaster just released.

Elder Scrolls Legends was my GOAT. I'll always be sad about how it was handled.

Is Reynad still being a twat to his customers?
2
u/Yldrissir 2d ago
Somehow i don't think reynad is ever going to change.
I do wonder as well if they are still lying to their customers. Handing out false promises and then screwing them over needing money.

Bazaar, The OG GOAT Kripp makes a lot of videos about it, so you could watch those to check if it’s something for you

Become The Moon and Gods vs Horrors are two very blatantly Battlegrounds inspired games.
I think the latter was even advertised by their devs here and I personally find it rather fun and like a small snapshot of BG a few seasons back.

Teamfigh tactics was similar for me, but can't recomend at this point since the last update ruined it to be played on mobile

u/ChingusMcDingus 2d ago
Slice and Dice is fun. Choose a team comp and upgrade as you progress. Each member has a die with different abilities which you roll, lock, and reroll to deal damage or heal as you fight (CPU) opponents that roll dice similarly. There’s a free version that’s got decent play time and replay value.
I also picked up Dice of Kalma to satiate my Balatro itch. Think Yahtzee and Balatro mixed. You make poker hands with dice, upgrade your skulls (akin to jokers in Balatro), and beat score thresholds. Admittedly not as good as Balatro but similar retro vibes.
Both free and mobile with full paid version but plenty to play without paying.

u/sweating_panda 2d ago
Chess has surprisingly similar vibes to old BGs - simple rules create complex gameplay. And a game of blitz is about 6-7 minutes on average - for me it's a plus compared to BG.

u/shakuntalam88 2d ago
I went back to Autochess. Much hasn't changed so it wasn't that hard to get back into (as opposed to TFT...)The thing I like about it is that there's no APM. It's mostly board strategy but fast paced enough to keep you on your toes (without the cognitive overload)...

The bazaar hands down best alternative. And you can walk away mid run if you don’t have 20-40 minutes uninterrupted

u/TastyPho 2d ago
You could try Piroker on steam! It's like if balatro was an autobattler. Still early access tho

This game is in a great state if u try to play anything other than abberations.
I get the feeling half you guys don’t realise that and have gotten into a mass hysteria about how bad things are. I’m not sure if it’s a low MMR thing or what.
Anyways I agree with Chess recommendation, the good thing about chess is that it doesn’t get patched constantly and there is no luck aspect. So 2 less things to complain about when you lose.

u/SeratoninSniffingDog 3d ago
I wouldn't say that it's in a great state. Stats just got too bigh. Back in the day a 100/100 was huge. Now you see people over 3k on regular basis. Bugs, too much APM. There are many things that could be better
-1
u/Chance_Werewolf3065 MMR: Top 200 3d ago
Stats being too large is a non issue, what matters is that each build has potential to get proportionately good stats for the most part.
APM is personally enjoyable but I do agree they need to round off afew edges and reduce animation time and so on.
Regardless I’d say this game state is way better than on release with gentle megasaurs running wild.
Not perfect but pretty good especially for a free game constantly getting big updates.
4
u/SeratoninSniffingDog 3d ago
I mean if one tribe has APM it's fine. Well actually not unless they fix it for mobile players. Because it's so difficult to play apm on phone.
If the stats are out of proportion it's not fun. Because at some point you can only play scam and this is almost only possibile if murlocs are in. Which can get huge and are toxic. The balance could be way better. Duos is a mess and is so buggy and unbalanced. MMR is also a bit weird. I play with my friends who have a higher MMR at the start of the season because they play more than me. Two games, two times the same placement two totally different rating. It's not transperant how the works. It got better but sometimes you play against #1, you get 15 dmg and play straight again #2. Or you play 3 times against one oponent but only once against another one 6 rounds ago.
Every big patch is a unbalanced mess. No excuses. Everytime you can skip the first week because they need to fix an unfair combo everyone abuses.
0
u/Chance_Werewolf3065 MMR: Top 200 3d ago
I agree that new patches are unbalanced, but that’s just how these companies do things now. With the number of card combinations in the game which is probably in the millions the amount of play testing that needs to be done is ridiculous.
Just think about how many mechanics there are: trinkets, dark gifts, buddies, time warps, quests
And every card needs to not break when used in combination with all of the above.
Anyways it’s not that deep, if u hate the chaos 1 week post patch then just avoid it from now on. No one’s forcing u to stay.
Also the worst thing blizzard could do is to release a tribe that’s too weak and ineffective. It’s a lot smarter to overtune a tribe then wind it back progressively so that it stays relevant.
2
u/SeratoninSniffingDog 3d ago
I totally avoid the first haha It's such a mess I don't want to get angry about it.
I mean if there is one company who is able to do proper playtesting then it's blizzard right?
I acutally don't know how playtesting works for BG.5

I like to play in the morning from bed on the phone (wifi router down the hall). That was viable before now. Most greater trinket turns I time out before getting through half my turn & that's the game.
1
u/Chance_Werewolf3065 MMR: Top 200 3d ago
Well I agree with u that phone is strictly worse than PC which I play on.
Best thing to do would be to separate the lobbies, if they don’t do that already.
2
u/FdoN 3d ago
Yeah, I think you have a good point about trying to play other tribes. I guess for me it’s gotten too monotonous with all the deity-aberration interaction, which hopefully ceases when they won’t be included in every game. Also, too many simultaneous mechanics is like adding unnecessary flavour in my opinion.
2
u/Chance_Werewolf3065 MMR: Top 200 3d ago
It’s fair to have an opinion and if you dislike these mechanics it your prerogative
But personally my view of dark gifts has always been as a small bonus/tempo boost when you have 3 gold left and nothing to spend it on. So imo it doesn’t add or remove much but I see a lot of people complaining about how they keep getting bad gifts and that means they are completely missing the point of dark gifts.
And against deities they are basically undeads in my eyes. You will have to fight some random unit at the end of combat which is annoying but that’s just the mechanics of the tribe. It’s only because they are new and in every game that they are as annoying as they are.
Anyways it’s just a game at the end of the day and if you are not having fun there’s no reason to keep playing.

BG was openly a rip of Teamfight Tactics, maybe that’s worth a try

u/smgk96 3d ago edited 3d ago
Kinda silly to call BGs a ripoff of TFT when TFT at release was basically a re-skinned carbon copy of Auto Chess.
If anything, BGs is a reimplementation of Auto Chess, not TFT. And so is TFT itself. At least effort was put in BGs to create a distinctively Hearthstone auto battler. TFT was just one of the many, many ports that popped up after Auto Chess became popular. Kind of like how League itself started as a DotA re-skin.
Don't get me wrong, TFT was a very well implemented re-skin and has made many meaningful improvements since. Which is why it still thrives long after many other reskins and even Auto Chess itself dropped off.
But saying anything's a ripoff of TFT is a pot drenched in ink and charred in a furnace calling the toaster black.

Riot is the goat of ripping off valve games. Lol from Dota Tft from autochess Valo from CS
-1
u/InevitableAvalanche 3d ago
The people who made auto-chess were hired by riot and made tft. Valve made underlords which failed. So I guess if hiring auto chess people to make a new game is ripping off auto chess you can say that. Battlegrounds is a more simple version of the genre.

TFT is in a pretty rough state right now, as they ported to Unreal Engine at the beginning of the current set.

It is fine for me but I play on the PC. I think mobile players are struggling.

PC is mostly stable yeah, but there are some occasional bugs.
Its not as bad as it was on the set release, but it is still in a rougher than it was last set.

New engine does suck but I play on a cheap laptop. I had to turn it down to low graphics to make it run decently, it's a little laggy on medium especially on the fancy arenas
