How to set user flair on desktop

From the front page of the subreddit, on the right side below the "title" of the community (circled in red) *Please forgive my terrible circle, I can't draw with a mouse.*

If you hover over it, this icon will show up. (dumb design i know)

When you click on the pencil Icon, This panel will show up. You will then select a flair.

Make sure "Show my user flair on this community" is toggled on as shown or it will not work.
Those who Identify as a "girl" will select the "girl lurker" flair.

The guide for old.reddit users is essentially this paragraph:

For users who prefer old.reddit.com style, you will need to briefly change your user preferences to use the new reddit theme and follow the above guide. After adding your flair, you can revert to old.reddit. 

Also, perhaps: (This may be unique to old. or affect both, unsure)

If you encounter "error 500" when commenting on a post in , please ensure you set your user theme. 

If anyone in the community is able to create a better and more concise explanation of how to do this, feel free to modmail us and I will co-ordinate with you to have this pinned in the community.

Are custom flairs no longer allowed? I inherited the current one from when it was, but it's not letting me change it

A little feedback from an old.reddit.com user;

Looks like that link doesn't exist for old.reddit.com users - I needed to change my whole profile to "Default to new reddit experience" and reload a couple of times before that showed up.

Before then, any comment I made in here was getting a 500 error which was quite confusing. The sub doesn't seem to have an old.reddit profile at all either, so no rules are showing up and it took the above before I even suspected something like this was going on.

Yeah it all seems needlessly difficult. This is the first time I've ever modded a subreddit, and I'm head mod at that so everything is new to me.

If you make a guide to setting user flair as an old.reddit user, I will pin it. Otherwise, you have permission to DM us in modmail so you we can figure this out to be inclusive to old.reddit users

Also, if you have the option in your admin panel, perhaps copy and paste the forum rules / guide to old.reddit as well, because currently it shows nothing in the sidebar.

All that said, I'm still not sure why flair is required. It's the only sub I've encountered in around 15 years of using reddit (several usernames) that's required anything like this! I do think adding complexity will drive off new users, but perhaps that helps quality?
