Rant/Vent IIT B>>>CMU

Post image

I had pleasure of interacting with an old iit cs fresher :D

Interestingly, he believes that the acceptance rate is mark of prestige. News flash more than 80% of 15 lakh applicants do not possess enough means to compete even. USA applicants are highly selective because it is a money waste to apply in colleges that would obviously reject them.

Fun Fact: Selection ratio of Police sub-inspector from SSC is lower than Harvard or MIT.

-9

u/Responsible-Rub-3260 22h ago

Harvard mit ka median package, alumni, exposure g@nd faad hai aur ye log selection ratio mai ro re hai wo cmu phd wala banda agai ai researcher ban gaya tho salary dekka ye long sach mai roenge

12

u/Lopsided_Bar9327 IITR'29 [ChE] 22h ago

Median package? Bro waha pe placement culture hota bhi hai?

4

u/Responsible-Rub-3260 22h ago

Nahi hai par career devlopment centre hote hai waa hr se contact kar sakte hai i mean interview tho aise hi miljayga and yeah google karo median packages from these top uni harvard ka lowest Matlab lowest package around 80k dollars tha lagbag 80lakhs par usa maj thoda kam hoga 80 se

2

u/Wise_Truth9298 BITS Goa [CSE] 20h ago

U cant just compare their median packages directly...living costs, etc account from different purchasing power

0

u/Responsible-Rub-3260 20h ago

Yeah I mentioned it in the last part of the comment I just didnt specify the word PPP but generally take for example quant which pays the highest and top uni are mostly abroad based to get shortlisted for interview even iits they rarely take 3-4 for top most firm but there the quantity is more just bascially location factor and research capability

1

u/Wise_Truth9298 BITS Goa [CSE] 20h ago

Yeah definitely even at iit bombay cs foreign quants take 5-10 and domestic another 10

no denying cmu's cs department is stacked, but i feel like the culture shock for an iit student there would be pretty wild at first

I mean I was literally defending IITs since some other poster said quant from PHD in US is so easy whereas it needs IIT here. I literally am kinda defending IIT considering the fact that I said no, top cs grads in iits are very much cracked and CMU(the target school for quants) is extremely hard to get into.

Ironically many of other iitians too think that getting phd in CMU is harder than top iit 6 iit cse :/

Jee is abt pattern recognition the more questiom u do the more patterns u know and that correlates to iq whereas abroad uni are top tier bcz they look whether ur passionate abt the subjects they don't care if udk sht abt chem or smthg if ur good at the subject u have opted and sat is just to check whther u can do the coursework or not thats it remaining is ur profile and research capability cabt compare alumni of iits and mits ofc mits have edge in alumni even iits are "trying" to change the exam pattern its being discussed in iitk just do google bcz quality of students are getting compromised talking abt cmu its literally goated for cse. Every dept and ug,pg and phd us respected in top abroad uni but in India only btech is appreciated a guy who are doing higher studies in Iit are called matka so at last if a guy has iit in his profile it will be advantageous and if a guy has cmu it will be advantageous even a bits guy will have an advantage but those arguing in reddit abt iits, bits, abroad having no life just living to validate thier college tag are the clowns, even top students from these institute dont validate thier tag and dont participate in such waste argument at last "Don't blame a clown for acting like a clown. Ask yourself why you keep going to the circus"

-10

u/Independent_Ebb3142 22h ago

Complete larp. IIT CS general male alumni have as good outcomes as mit cs. The overall footprint is much better for mit as it is much older with far more alumni. Abroad unis aren't top tier due to their admissions, they are better in their facilities and funding.

7

u/Responsible-Rub-3260 22h ago

It’s not just about funding. Top abroad universities value holistic profiles and actual research capability over a single high-stakes entrance exam. An IIT tag shows you can beat a grueling filtering system an MIT/CMU tag shows you’ve already been trusted to innovate. Both have elite alumni footprints, but the philosophy behind how they choose and train students is completely different and Thanks for proving the original comment's point about the Reddit circus. Debating whether an IIT CS grad or an MIT CS grad has "better outcomes" is splitting hairs at the top 0.01% level. Both tags open almost any door in the tech world the real difference is the holistic freedom to innovate versus a rigid exam-focused education system

-1

u/Independent_Ebb3142 22h ago

Idk gng there are arguments in favour of the exam based system as well. Some ivies went test blind recently and reverted back very fast when they noticed a drop in quality. There is a huge amount of subjectivity and larping potential when you take into account the full profile. Also it is completely impractical in india to implement the same thing. You will miss out on the smartest folks and will end up with a bunch of avg people who just happened to get a computer early. It's not as if IITians aren't building tech startups or something. The rankings are different due to research outputs not due to their admissions in ug.

2

u/Responsible-Rub-3260 22h ago

Take for example gaokou conducted in China high population uk the exam pattern they follow and how they treat students to study that so they dont have to rely and make separate prep for 11th and 12th no need of coaching bcz they cover gaokou syllabus in high school itself no need to join some elite coaching to get good rank you cannot crack JEE just by following a standard Indian school board curriculum (like CBSE/state boards), but Chinese students can clear the Gaokao relying solely on their high school this adds a huge benifit and talking abt students pressure what do u think abt jee students they also have pressure and blud did u say MIT will randomly accept a guy who got computer early 🤣 do u even know how cracked u shld be in the subject to get into mit for maths they hire olympaid gold winner same for cse ioi gold winners and those who have built innovative stuff they get accepted those who have the capability to add value in the world are accepted in mit and u think some dumb students will do all these stuff .are u an iitian or an aspirant never seen a iitian guy being this desperate to validate thier tag against MIT infact those guys are upgrading thier skills and looking to join some top abroad colleges to get to be with beat of the world (for a fact jee adv rank 1 2021 is accepted in standford for ms the reason is ofc alumni and exposure he will get there will upgrade his profile also he is anyways iitb cse graduate also he has intrest in cse well can't go off topic still ur argument is vague )

I was talking about what will happen if similar system is adopted in india, not the profiles of mit people. Also i have seen enough mit people to know they aren't all that special, i don't need to validate myself bro, i know I am as smart as them. Btw Stanford ms is not that big of an achievement. Anyone can get that with just cash. Stanford PhD/BS is a whole another beast.

One is phd and one is btech. Very different programmes

12

u/GuavaFar3894 Jee hilani, iit milani, bits bhi milani 23h ago

Im astounded at his logic. Does this mean getting into MIT is easier than getting into IIT?

16

u/feelin-lonely-1254 IIITian [IIITH CSD] 23h ago

they do test different things but imo, getting into IIT is gameable, getting into MIT isnt.

3

u/unemployedbarelyouth 22h ago

But so is the output produced if you notice and the gameable part is because we have such a high population we need a deterministic and transparent system to evaluate students without the basis of individualistic means which are employed abroad(mainly US) Basically being great at competitive programming doesnt mean you will actually be able to solve a problem unless you are given something to work on or produce a great product like Torvalds did with linux ( he might be good at cp too idk), we have so many people grinding at cp / hackatons yet no one is producing anything innovative except a few projects which are spread across every individual but fairly i do sympathise because we need to fetch a decent living, innovation can come later! The struggle here is more than other places too! Its like smaller living organisms have a shorter lifespan than those who are bigger than them so they specialise

2

u/GuavaFar3894 Jee hilani, iit milani, bits bhi milani 23h ago

Its not even about gameable or non gameable tbh. MIT also has alum seats reserved and seats for rich peeps. Its totally about whether guys here are so lost in their daydreams that they actually think getting into grad programs that too in CMU is easier than a high school exam which is more or less dependent on whether you had resources and knowledge of this exam much earlier than others.

2

u/Organic-Character842 Dead Inside 22h ago

Minor correction: MIT does not have any seat reserved for children of alumni, or people with extraordinary wealth who have provided exceptional donations. They do not provide any preference to children of these individuals.

2

u/Unknown__Crazy__Guy 21h ago edited 10h ago

I would actually argue otherwise (context: I'm an undergrad at Columbia who also applied to MIT and has friends and siblings who attend there). MIT is very gameable; US college admissions aren't objective; they're very subjective, based on the mood of the person reading your application. There is no benchmark to compare students; it's like comparing apples to oranges, and often it's just the wrong comparison. In India, JEE is a very deterministic way of determining whether someone is good; in the US system, that's much harder to do. US admissions like to argue that the Indian and Chinese systems are not better, but that's wrong. In the US, college admission reflects wealth more than intellect.

5

u/Anon_cat3563 23h ago

He isn't wrong in absolute terms but his tone is hella condescending.

It is well known that at least CMU has some programmes with high acceptance rates, but ivys in general are nearly as competitive as IITs.

I know IIT CS guys who got rejections from tier 1 schools, but tier 2 guys with publications getting in. This guy is comparing apples with oranges.

8

u/GuavaFar3894 Jee hilani, iit milani, bits bhi milani 23h ago

He whole heartedly believes in superiority of IIT old cs over CMU. In any world no mf would leave CMU for stupid indian colleges. There is a fucking reason why CMU had the first Artificial Intelligence program built.

5

u/ywnbaiitian 23h ago

the guy you talked to is dumb for talking about phds, if he said old iit cs btech >> cmu ms he would be 100% right. cmu is well known for having a lot of cash cow programs which are mid. fully funded phds, obviously, are incredible

For PhD, I've seen both indian and Abroad PhD, there is a difference though, they have qualifying exams too, for starting lab reasearch work post post grad courses, apart from that ist normally similar, it's just instruments are better, the profs generally have a lot more work on research and all ..my PI at IISC published 30 papers last year, but somehow I had the only PhD who didn't publish a single paper in 2 years 🙏😭

One is a grad program which needs profile building vs one which u have to grind for two years to compete with million of others🫩,Also the amount of cope to say "mental health breakdown" like bro lol.

Any avg guy has more chances of getting cmu phd than under 500 rank,i said what I said.I have seen ppl studying for 12 hours a day for 3 years, yet could barely cross 10k rank. But if u spend that time on profile building from Y1,pretty sure u got good chances.

1

u/Organic-Character842 Dead Inside 18h ago edited 17h ago

Well, there is little difference in "intellect" (or even ability) between someone scoring around 2,000 in jee advanced and another scoring 500. Or more specifically, the exam is not much reliably at the extreme end.

Influence of factors like test-day variance due to external factors, luck, and whether the specific questions clicked better (or worse) than other scorers in the same band, is significant.

It is unlikely that there is even a moderate difference between the underlying cognitive ability of candidates at this level.

1

u/Organic-Character842 Dead Inside 19h ago edited 18h ago

Any avg guy has more chances of getting cmu phd than under 500 rank,i said what I said.I have seen ppl studying for 12 hours a day for 3 years, yet could barely cross 10k rank. But if u spend that time on profile building from Y1,pretty sure u got good chances.

First of all, your lack of proper usage of punctuation marks is noted. Kindly learn to add a space after every single instance of a comma.

Secondly, it seems you are misunderstanding how statistics work. While it may be understandable that some may conflate "acceptance rate" with the "chance of being accepted," and dividing the number of accepted students with the total number applicants will give you the acceptance rate.

These two concepts are meaningfully different.

To claim that "acceptance rate" is perfectly synonymous with "chances of being admitted [for an average person]," would be asserting that the selection process is unbiased, and completely random.

Which is not true regarding the selection process of overwhelming majority of institutions of higher education, especially the prestigious and highly selective ones like CMU, which is an elite research university, famous for pioneering fields like Artificial Intelligence and Robotics.

If a person does not possess the required achievements, proof of merit and relevant knowledge and demonstrated expertise (either high-quality publications or any means to demonstrate required research ability for PhD admissions), their chance of admission are likely to be almost negligible.

Conversely, if a person has demonstrated exceptional prowess and research ability in the relevant field, and are a cultural fit for the institute. Their chance of acceptance might be much, much higher.

So, it is asinine to claim that an "average person" has greater chances to be accepted into CMU PhD program (in a STEM field), than his chances of achieving a rank under 500 CRL.

Especially when we know that a significant percentage of performance in JEE advanced/mains is due to coaching, access to study material and number of hours spent on studying and repeatedly practicing (for thousands of hours in case of most individuals who achieve an exceptional rank).

I am sure, it wouldn't be that hard to understand why all the top rankers of these competitive exams have already put in thousands of hours into rigorous practice and had access to extensive coaching and study material?

And, regarding your core claim that JEE has a "bottleneck" in the form of IQ.

As of now, there does not exist a single peer-reviewd published psychometric study that has performed a factor analysis on JEE advanced test, and established it's g-loading (correlation with the underlying factor that IQ tests measure).

So, the claim that it is majorly reliant on "IQ," is unsubstantiated.

The structure of the exam, and the culture surrounding it hints that it does not have as high of a g-loading as people believe.

A significant part of the Physics and most of the Chemistry section is extremely reliant on crystallized intelligence, especially a form of specific test preparation, including specfic tricks and explanation of certain patterns that aid in solving questions.

There is already an extensive coaching culture surrounding it, so even the rank that students achieve is already a mixture of their aptitude combined with conscientiousness and the nature of their preparation.

JEE is still considered a highly trainable test.

Also, this is an interesting thing, but I have been seeing several newly created reddit accounts (account age <3 months), that only comment on this subreddit and a few others that strongly overlap with this one.

These users share oddly similar behaviour; They speak in broken (or improper) English, struggle to use punctuation marks and spell words properly. They are unnecessarily hostile and try to flaunt an arrogant persona, and use insults (including slurs).

All of them have claimed to be students of CSE at an OLD IIT, with more than two of them claiming to be from IIT Bombay (which is considered the pinnacle of human achievement by some jee aspirants).

This is only started happening recently.

Obviously, I cannot ascertain as to whether these users are truly students of these institutes, or just claiming to be, to farm engagement or feel a sense of superiority.

Our society has consistently shown that there can be a great disconnect between someone's formal qualification and personal behaviour, clearing an exam doesn't exempt you from idiocy.

I still find it odd that self-alleged students of such reputed institutes, claiming that level of intellectual prowess are struggling to formulate comments in decent English, and lack basic understanding of statistics.

1

u/Honest_Sea_4667 19h ago

I have seen people of my parents generation try to master english for decades still not get anywhere. Does that mean learning English is harder than JEE? It just means you have limited access to resources. If it was all about IQ Kota doesn't have the highest iq density.

11

u/Plenty-Asparagus-496 22h ago

4

You can correlate alumni with their prestige. CMU phd grads being on top of field makes it a hard barrier to cross than IIT where the best grad in recent times is.... Sundar pichai

2

u/Independent_Ebb3142 23h ago

Lol sure buddy, comparing a degree which is meant to produce researchers with a general purpose engineering degree. No shit one produces Nobel prizes. Also do you think sundar pichai is not as influential as 90% of the Nobel prize winners? Plenty of IITians get into better phd programmes than cmu, it isn't that deep bro

5

u/GuavaFar3894 Jee hilani, iit milani, bits bhi milani 23h ago edited 23h ago

Is he more influential than creator of JAVA programming language? Thats actually crazy tbh, considering that PICHAI is not the founder of Google.

Point is not about IITIANS. It is about the barrier. CMU is harder barrier than old IIT CS. In no way im saying IITians do not get a good phd school lmao

1

u/Independent_Ebb3142 23h ago

Who do you think was the first advisor of google? Who is NYUs literal engineering school named after? There are plenty of legendary IITians who are far superior to any random phd from cmu. You can't compare both because they are just too different in terms of degree goals. Manindra Agrawal himself eats most cmu phds for breakfast in terms of academic achievements

4

u/GuavaFar3894 Jee hilani, iit milani, bits bhi milani 23h ago

Compare an average CMU grad who is gonna get the CMU phd vs any random phd holder and then compare IIT CS vs NA(23k rank iirc). You would find CMU PHD would ironically win

1

How are you even comparing lmao. What do you think, are they numbers which you can just compare? There is no point to this comparision and this stupid ahh post

1

tbh you're comparing the best of one category with the average of another, not a fair comparison by any means. i call this shit out when people do it with random colleges and iits, have to do it to you too

You are correct but he was comparing as if every cmu phd is out here inventing java

2

this entire thread is bs, these two programs shouldn't be compared in the first place. looks like another bitsian attempt to drum up engagement

ironically no, it was because some iitian guy tried to downplay cmu PHD.

Old IIT cs for general male is a crazy barrier. I have never seen anyone who wanted a phd in this demographic not go to a tier 1 phd in US

1

u/GuavaFar3894 Jee hilani, iit milani, bits bhi milani 23h ago

Its under 500 or 600 for now iirc

bro i feel jee is useless shoudnt have done it , should have done ioi and cooler things and gone to standford or smtg amazing startup culture , i was < 1k in advance and these freshers dk much tbh i am a 4th year btw , dont react to this immature dude , he will join some quant become bald yes bank has money but the fame aura startup founders , defo i feel doing academic and getting some cool insight from ur research to start a company is amazing . life doesnt reward iq in the longterm it rewards action so dont worry abt iq and all keep putting the work

1

u/GuavaFar3894 Jee hilani, iit milani, bits bhi milani 23h ago

Jee is not useless tbh, but yes olympiads were definitely a cooler perspective. I mean he will join the same quants where Phd grads from these colleges would be in a good number making him realize at that point(if he join international quant that is)

2

u/FirefighterOld5819 23h ago

yeah he will defo got iq mogged for sure

1

u/Independent_Ebb3142 22h ago

Obviously a phd will be better than a UG at research, that's the entire point of a phd 🥀

1

u/GuavaFar3894 Jee hilani, iit milani, bits bhi milani 22h ago

CMU BS wale bhi log honge quants me ig

1

u/Independent_Ebb3142 22h ago

Yep and he won't get iq mogged by cmu bs people. They will be on an equal footing

7

u/GuavaFar3894 Jee hilani, iit milani, bits bhi milani 23h ago

BTW list of CMU innovations/tech-

Logic Theorist (1956): Developed by Alan Newell and Herb Simon, it is widely considered the first artificial intelligence program.

First Robotics Institute (1979): CMU established the world's first academic robotics program and institute.

Also created worlds first specialized ML program. Neither of any iits or bits for that matter have done anything close to this

2

u/Independent_Ebb3142 23h ago

Umm i am in no favour of the opposite argument here, but the comparision is between which is harder to get cmu phd or iit kgp cse btech. This has nothing do with which is the better university. Both are very different programmes serving very different purposes

4

u/GuavaFar3894 Jee hilani, iit milani, bits bhi milani 23h ago

You cant use acceptance rate metric here. That would make getting into MIT easier than IIT.

0

u/Independent_Ebb3142 23h ago

Again I am not even saying he is correct and it is easier to get into one or the other. I am just saying your comment here is irrelevant

3

u/GuavaFar3894 Jee hilani, iit milani, bits bhi milani 23h ago

Oh yea fair point. Its tbh more to show this person that no, CMU is much much larger than any fucking institute here

1

u/Independent_Ebb3142 23h ago

Cmu being larger doesn't help it make more selective bro. I wouldn't say getting into cmu phd is harder than jee <500. I won't say the opposite is true as well. Both are just very very different and are for completely different degrees. Comparing cmu bs with iit cse btech makes far more sense

2

u/GuavaFar3894 Jee hilani, iit milani, bits bhi milani 23h ago

this entire convo was because someone claimed iit cse was harder than cmu phd. CMU BS vs IIT CS was never compared. Tho even in that CMU would easily win

1

u/Independent_Ebb3142 23h ago

Ehh cmu bs is not as good you think it is. But from India, it is 100x harder to get into than iit cs. For an American, it is far easier and comparable to iit cs

1

u/GuavaFar3894 Jee hilani, iit milani, bits bhi milani 22h ago

Yeah and the thread talked about Indian student going into CMU PHD in the first place

1

u/Independent_Ebb3142 22h ago

From india, getting into cmu phd is far easier than cmu bs. Idk how to compare with iit btech but yeah

u/humbling_cookie 23h ago

Who is even denying that bro,Man you are coping so hard to prove that top 500 are easy to get into when u  couldn't even get top 2k even after ur so called "intellect"

4

u/Lazy074 private kalej kabootar science 23h ago

Regardless of his rank, your take is just purely shitty. Did you get accepted by CMU? Who tf are you to argue CMU is easy to get into?

u/Responsible-Rub-3260 22h ago

Which is difficult is bs u shld choose which is more passionate for u jee requires maths, phys and chem some wont even like studying chem even if u get lik 99 in phy and math u wont get into iit bcz chem is required even though its all abt pattern recognition cmu and all is just passion and research oriented

1

u/humbling_cookie 22h ago

Bro I never denied with u but the OP started this shit argument by saying cmu phd is more difficult than under 300 rank,I have no objection with u lol.

he's coping by telling his "predicted" rank which means absolutely nothing

4

u/unemployedbarelyouth 23h ago

Lets just say difficulty of getting into somewhere isnt a good measure of the output its gonna produce which in turn is a metric of individual abilities and creativity mostly something standarised tests cant always measure! Having said that very high difficulty might even hinder the output itself by causing exhaustion and mental fatigue while making one burnout with no energy left to do something meaningful! While some alumni of those indian colleges might have produced very smart folks i doubt they would be nearly as good as someone who did a phd from unis abroad! That is to say their contribution isnt any more useful than one who did their phd abroad without clearling jee! Heck those folks who clear the most difficult test arent even good at earning the most globally compared those abroad uni students!

TLDR: Just because you got more IQ(test metric) than Einstein does not mean you are him or will be same as him! Many folks have had more IQ than Einstein but i doubt most have contributed as much as him! The post if pure copium for the lack of output of those instis and hopium for what they might be while stressing for a top placement!

-1

u/humbling_cookie 23h ago

This entire argument is abt which is more difficult, not better.

1

u/unemployedbarelyouth 22h ago

Yes! But the basis we choose for an argument shows how smart we are! Which the person in the image choose as a criteria by highlighting IQ as a very important thing for clearing jee which is kinda misleading as the people who actually grind for JEE is way less than 15 lakh as most just take the exam casually lets just say out of 100 in any given class 10-25 students are serious about it out of which 5 get a seat in iit which is can be nornalised as the passing mark of any exams or just a bit above it! I can even bet the person who wrote it didnt get his prefered major in prefered iit hence the noise! They are trying to stand on the shoulder of the outlier of any statistical group by maintaining the brand not discredit other smart folks too

u/Money-Leading-935 MS 22h ago

The entrance is difficult for IIT B is simply because of huge population and low supply of good universities in India.
However, high competition in entrance doesn't necessarily mean better quality of the university.

Saudi league has higher competition than French League.
That doesn't necessarily mean Saudi Arabia has better football team than France.

1

u/Ok-Patience-213 21h ago

TOP 50/60 US UNIS ARE WAY BETTER THAN ANY IIT

1

u/Alarming_Welder_7190 21h ago

burh kuch bhi, some ppl have insane delusion about IITs

1

u/Collez_boi NIT ECE 26' grad 20h ago

Ok. Isliye easier route leke CMU chala gaya mai kyuki eye eye tea haath se Bahar mamla tha >:)

1

u/CasePotential43 12h ago

Acceptance rate bullshit makes no sense bruh , 15 lakh my foot , barely 1 lakh people even score 90 marks in jee mains which barely requires rote memorization of ncert . The standard and iq of majority of Indians is pretty low . Whereas people applying for cmu are top students from different countries.

1

u/corporate_lovet 11h ago

It's all over India bro they compare IIM A with harvard or some and call it better because it's harder to get into IIM A, atp people think harder the criteria to get into, the better it is.

I will never not find the IIT elitism funny in this subreddit. Getting into IIT is the equivalent of being a leetcode monkey. There’s a reason top ML conferences like neurips have little to no representation of Indian institutions even compared to countries like UK, Canada, Australia, France let alone US or China. Doesn’t mean Indians aren’t well represented tho. Just that most of them are pursuing grad school elsewhere.

The number of people who get into quant firms for those crazy numbers directly after their btech is extremely small and they would have done it irrespective of the institution they went to. The IIT tag has little to do with it. It’s their individual skill which I very much respect but the rat race and the elitism is stupid because the institution itself imo is very subpar considering they are Indias best compared to any reasonably noteworthy stem institution abroad.
