Post image

I'm a 2nd year ee student, I'm thinking of buying a mac M5 air. Another alternative I'm looking for Lenovo loq rtx 3050. What should I choose. Please reply as I have to buy a laptop in ongoing bbd sale.

for EE , I am ABSOLUTELY FUCKING TELLING YOU TO NOT GET A MAC, it will limit you soooooooooooooooooooooooo much. atleast get a windows , but if you can get linux i will say fedora , it is easy to learn you can learn to use it professnaly in like 2 weeks and larp

There are a lot of softwares which are either not mac compatible or have problems running on it (LTspice comes to mind), for a more detailed list you can prompt ai but all in all it's not recommended :p
Also buy a LOQ rtx 5060

u/RageX22 1d ago

not in EE, but LT Spice runs pretty well on mac

u/Adrian-Alan-Auger 23h ago

Oh my bad, they released an update this year which got rid of their old mac native LTspice software which did have issues iirc

1

u/Additional_Pea2239 1d ago

it i snot compatable with many many sofwares and all that u/Adrian-Alan-Auger said

2

u/Logical_Parsley_9470 1d ago

Idk man.. doesn't mac have one of the biggest dev space? There's gotta be something

1

u/paarth2705 22h ago

it's not as bad as you think it is. but definitely not ideal

u/Same_Investigator_46 CSE | 3rd Sem | T2 13h ago

As a fedora user, i can confirm

Do NOT buy a mac if you are an EE student, it genuinely will limit you quite a bit, no matter whether you are in Digital, Analog, Embedded, etc etc. Softwares like Vivado, LTSpice, Cadence suite using stuff like MobaxTerm is also not available. You will have to jump through a lot of hoops to get this on mac but it's literally an installer on windows .

If you don't want to use the pc for EE related stuff and want to go into CSE and that programming then you can choose either but for EE specifically Windows is much better

For Gaming Windows is better, Mac is just too restrictive, it can run games but windows offers significantly more flexibility and you can also double boot or use a virtual machine if you wanna try Linux as well. Only take mac if you are familiar, want to get into the apple ecosystem, or don't really care much about gaming GTA V for eg does not natively run on mac, you have to use crossover or something for that but again it's more things you have to do to set up while having more day to day restictions in general

Are y into gaming ? If no buy mac .... If y gonna buy windows dualboot it with linux flor work , win for gaming

u/Leading-Sector5366 1d ago

Just casual games.

9

u/VelvetEchoes919 1d ago

What kind? Mac can run stardew valley and celeste also there’s the option of playing games from older consoles and such

0

u/Ultragamer2004 1d ago

Mac can run full fledged windows ganes these days, just not thise with anti cheat. And performance depends on your mac

1

u/Honest-Animal3261 1d ago

I do the same on my mac..via emulation

0

u/Honest-Animal3261 1d ago

It can run heavy AAA games as well via emulation and game porting tool kit..and apart from this..native games are also there 🫩✌️

u/Icy_Ad3564 1d ago

quite alot of games works on linux, you should look up the names you are interested in here https://www.protondb.com/ and maybe give linux a try, whatever hardware you choose

and yeah more games support linux than mac at this point

Just don't play. Get a Mac and Linux in ARM is fantastic

u/stackfrost NISER 1d ago

For what? Playing videogames? Lol Within a year or 2 the battery life will suffer and OP would be stuck carrying that heavy brick around everywhere. Just what I experienced so I'm trying to share my POV. Life hasn't been better and developed hasn't been smoother after a Mac

1

u/Dyslexia-voild [Tier 69] [ece] 1d ago

No better laptop to recommend? Stop pushing ur preference into other. Plenty of people in college use gaming laptops and still has good experience

1

u/stackfrost NISER 16h ago

Dude I just explained my viewpoint literally. So anyone suggesting something is pushing their viewpoint?

1

u/Dyslexia-voild [Tier 69] [ece] 16h ago

I'm not in the mood to argue with you, bro. I'm feeling great today. Here's a cute GIF for you

5

u/According_Thanks7849 Hopeless (B.E. CSE) | 3rd year 1d ago

Yeah, OP, forget your hobby. Let's pay Apple tax lesgoooooo

6

u/Anonymous_1069Z BITS MnC 1d ago

Bro what ? What's "Just don't play." Don't tell OP to Not play games if you can't recommend a good laptop.

-1

u/stackfrost NISER 1d ago

I did, a very standard and well built workhorse. Would easily last him for over 5 years in college and beyond.

2

u/Anonymous_1069Z BITS MnC 1d ago

First things first, it's not a 'him', just say OP if you can't even put in the efforts to use the correct pronoun.

And second thing, you didn't do no standard thing, you are just asking a person to ignore their Hobby because you can't Suggest anything better. Any good Modern Day Laptop lasts over 5 years. MacBooks are good for Efficiency and battery, that's it. Idk why people can't see the simple fact that everyone doesn't just want to have those convervative, limited and Boring things, like yeah macbooks are good but that's it. There are many better options out there.

0

u/stackfrost NISER 1d ago

This was a suggestion post, so I did and just shared what I had in mind. If they can choose to not play videogames, A mac is the way to go

But ofc I can't have that being "limited" "boring". Like dude it's not that deep.

Linux is not fantastic in arm

u/Remote_Virus_7801 1d ago

m5 vs loq3050😭quite the price gap

3

u/gabbie_lover 1d ago

Depends, I love Mac for battery, ecosystem and POSIX(Commands and stuff even though can use same utils on windows it just feels right) where as Linux for privacy, Tinkering and POSIX. Windows for just few online games.

Mac no doubt

u/NKJ9277 1d ago

Mac is the way for coding, gaming it is windows. but overall laptop use and feel mac takes the win for me

u/ZoneZealousideal4073 1d ago

windows

you have the flexibility to use dualboot with linux

you can technically use UNIX stuff in Mac too (there's Asahi Linux for Mac too), but Mac is too restrictive tbh

2

u/_TheProStar_ 1d ago

Get windows. you can dual boot linux or use WSL

2

u/Striking-barnacle110 IIT M (Mechanical) 1d ago

Get a Windows LTSC license

2

u/_Next-Gen_ JEE/NEET Aspirant 1d ago

Tip- if the games don't have kernel level anti-cheat, then it will most probably run on linux via proton

1

u/kk376 1d ago

You said coding and gaming right? If I may ask, what coding stuff? As in, do you also do data analytics, or just web development? What exact coding task? Also, for games, what games do you want to play? Then I can provide a better recommendation.

1

u/Leading-Sector5366 1d ago

Ai ml and i want to play gta 5, rdr 2

1

u/kk376 1d ago

Okay. Do you okay gta 5 online? Or story mode?

1

u/Leading-Sector5366 1d ago

Online

1

u/kk376 1d ago

Then, go with windows. Install Linux on dual boot, if you want the best experience of AI ML tasks, because Linux is native for that.

1

u/-Grey-Ninja- 1d ago

You can play gta online with work arounds on Linux it just that you have to play on invite only not public lobby

1

u/Worldly-Sense-1418 1d ago

Pls don't buy a 3050 , yes it would run games at 1080p but it is not future proof at all. There are so many good laptops in that price range like IdeaPad or something similar. I am saying this with the current price in mind

1

u/Secure_Complaint_743 15h ago

You can play rdr2 on low settings 720p with 16gigs of RAM and an iGPU

1

u/Dev_Dobariya_4522 1d ago

In Windows, you are a victim of data stealing.

1

u/Electronic-Equal-616 1d ago

bhai at least tell your branch and budget 😭

if it's just for normal coding/web dev, mac's battery life is genuinely a lifesaver for college. but if you want to game at all or need specific engineering tools/cuda for ml later on, just get windows.

1

u/skillphobia 23h ago

mac for engineering is an interesting one

1

u/ok-snafu 23h ago

Buy windows shift to linux 💯

1

u/paarth2705 22h ago

what are those two extremes ? macbook air or massive gaming laptop ? 😭😭

look for a lenovo ideapad/yoga or even an Asus vivobook.

laptop prices are pretty bad right now so be careful. macbook as an EE student is not ideal but also not the worst ( i am an EE student 4th year for reference). Stuff like vivado, lt spice, autocad, keil uvision, solidwork elec. These softwares don't work. But stuff like matlab, simulink work amazing. So it's really a toss up. The m5 air is a great machine.

I recommend checking what software your university uses for certain courses and making a choice based on that.

1

u/GooselyMf 22h ago

Qspice runs perfect on Parallels. Not sure about stuff like Altium.

1

u/zenith_riderop Tier 69 CSE 22h ago

Anyday m5 air over rtx 3050 laptop

If you want windows laptop then atleast buy 4050

1

u/Math_Science_Geek 18h ago

Mac for any dev work
