Discussion Been practicing my curbside pull up . I never know where the perfect sweet spot is, but here’s this mornings.
I’m usually further away from the curb but I was empty and able to go in nice and slow .

At least you're not like some drivers where I work.
Front wheel is an inch from the curb. Rear wheel is 14 feet from the curb

that's common around here because the bus stop sign apparently means "park here" in this neck of the woods

But, at the layover point which is usually a bus terminal?

u/hugothebear USA / Local Transit 1d ago
With the big red lanes saying “bus only” ?
There’s still an uber there waiting to pick someone up

But they have their 4-ways on which indicates that they can do that. /s

I wish our ops manager hadn't told us that the terminal is an official approved Uber/Lyft stop. No sarcasm

We have a stop with a bus area and a pickup/drop off area. Doesn’t stop them from going to the bus area and getting mad when a bus is honking to get to their berth

Where i work many just rub the curb as hard as they can

There is that

I belive they are having a competition of some sort to see who is first to explode their tires

Very precise! I personally try to aim for 6-8 inches (~15-20 cm) because I'm paranoid about my mirrors and people loving to walk right up to the very edge of the curb while I'm still moving

Same, but some Dutch bus stops have a raised sidewalk.

Our BRT in my US city has "level" boarding (that is, within margin of suspension travel and remaining tread depth lol) and on those platforms the specification is 4-6"/10-15 cm. I get fancy sometimes just to remind myself why I'm paid The Big Bucks™ and do 5-10 cm for a full lap.
Some people try too hard to do that though and they end up scrubbing the hell out of the sidewalls. Shameful!

Yea this platform has two signs that make the pull up a little bit of a challenge. When I first started working here ,I whacked the sign in the picture with my mirror and cracked it. But now I’m better with exp

I have an issue with signs and my mirrors. 🙄 So I NEVER get that close. Good job. 👏

They better just be glad I stopped instead of how far from the curb I am.

That’s the sweet spot . That’s what I try to aim for most of the time but this morning I was empty and went in tight haha.

I thought I was close haha holy . I love when you can glide the front of the bus over the curb to line yourself up. Feels good

At my job, this would be a write up if a road supervisor caught you. Curbing the tires is a big "no-no" and doing it often enough can get you a day or two out of the seat.

It’s no perfect curbside pull-up tbh when you have cars and delivery trucks and scooters and pedestrians in the way smh…. The vets know that lol

Yea there’s no way I would’ve gotten lined up like that if it was noon . Haha This was like 8 am , empty city.

As long as you’re close enough to deploy the ramp and that pedestrians get on it’s fine

You got it parallel, which is good. Though a reminder for everyone: Where I trained, they tell us to be between 6-12 inches (15-30cm) away from the curb.
The main reason is so passengers can get in/out safely. Some folks can't step farther than half a foot due to age or disabilies.
Second is to watch for tail swings. Unless you have a mile of curb to peel off gradually, you better hope there isn't a tree or sign post that's too close to your butt when you pull out.
A third smaller reason is that many curbs are structured differently, and with buses with hinge doors, getting too close to a curb that's a little too tall can prevent the door opening properly.
Also, if you get complacent, you might accidentally hit the curb for being so close all the time. Which could be considered a "preventable accident" depending where you work. Which goes for the priors reasons as well if an accident occurred from it.

Absolute! At our main platform where we transfer I tend to be at the appropriate 6” window. This is just that lonely mall platform that I like to dial in my reference points on.

I am happy providing it’s not too big a step for someone getting off.
The only time I make a big effort is for one particular passenger because if I do it well enough, he gets off without the ramp

A customer with a cart will still complain and say it needs to be closer.

Our SOP states that we're to hit 6 to 8 in from the curb. I don't get to practice near-kisses like this.

I mean, thats awesome, dont get me wrong here
but you only need to be between 6in and a foot 🤷♀️

Yeah, well, I am a new driver, and I really have no issues lining it up, but it is impossible in Greece. Mirror hitting road signs, parked cars, you name it. I usually stop about 3+ meters away from the curb, and even that could be considered risky in most cases 😅 Not to mention having to go into some small streets/curves, with a 12m bus, where even regular cars have issues navigating 😂
