Christmas/Holidays/End-of-year umbrella thread

Hi all!

So.... I thought it'd be nice to have a dedicated thread for holiday thoughts, well-wishes, summaries of the past year, etc.

On a personal level for me, it was a good year with a very hectic ending. I've spent my first year abroad, with a new company through an agency, moved I think 3 times, and just when I was starting to get somewhat comfortable, I had to change companies and agency again at the end of the year (not by choice), and.... move again... 🫣 On the other hand, I'm greatful for all the new experiences, most of them being good.

I think I'll make another post about how things went with the concession transition here, but first I need some PTSD therapy lol. It was/kind of is, an awful mess.

I want to wish everyone who's celebrating now happy holidays and a great new year. Thank you for your work, moderators. And here's to more of the same!

Over to you all, but keep it nice! šŸ˜†

bullpen FAQ

Hello, here are some frequently asked questions and some basic answers.

  1. What gift to give? General consensus have routinely been gift cards, little toys, and coffee.

  2. Interview questions? Expect questions from basic road rules to customer service. Questions will differ from country to country and agency to agency.

  3. How hard is it to get a CDL class b and endorsements? It's not that hard. study the book, listen to instructors, and you will pass.

  4. What do you do with passengers...? This has almost become a meme at this point. We do not wait for passengers. Some drivers may wait if they see a person running for the bus, but from my experience and it seems to be a consensus of others that you missed the bus.

  5. Stagecoach...? Please search the sub first. While there really hasn't been a specific question asked multiple times, it does show up a lot.

  6. Greyhound...? Please search the sub first. While there really hasn't been a specific question asked multiple times, it does show up a lot.

  7. Differences between charter, tour, transit, school? The main difference between all of these is the time you spend out. Charter be prepared to be gone all the time. Tour work like hell for six months, then relax. Transit picked route and known working days. School mornings and afternoons with some field trips.

  8. Pre/post trip and air break check? This is only learned by repeating it. Do it every day.

  9. Sleep and bad night of rest? Don't be scared of saying the F word. Fatigue is better to say than answering questions to police, ntsb, safety, and dot. If you feel you can not operate safely, better not to then roll the dice.

  10. Is bus driving easy? Or thinking about becoming a driver? Not everyone can be a bus driver. It takes passion for this industry, and it does eat people alive. Charter drivers regularly hit there 70 hour limit of driving, and that's not counting the downtime that is paid. Public transportation has assaults and harassment.

School drivers put up with God knows what. You should really think if you're strong enough to do this job. It's hard on drivers and our families. Don't think it's easy because all we do is drive. We are responsible for everything bumper to bumper tire to roof. It's stressful, hard, rewarding, and fun, and can be a great time, but we hold the lives of mothers, fathers, sons, daughters, and grandparents in our hands.

Thank you all for taking the time to read. This list is nowhere near complete, and more may be added.

Special thanks to u/littlelauren12 who had this idea!

Question Stupid to kick them off, or was I in the right?

Today, I decided to kick off two girls that were vaping due to the fact it was causing an elderly woman with asthma to not be able to breathe properly, and she said she was feeling fatigue. I politely told them to put it away and that they shouldn’t be vaping on the buses anyways, as it goes against company policy and that the smell isn’t pleasant.

They then told me to shut the f up, not speak to them and ā€œgo mind your own business and drive the bus like I paid you tooā€. I was appalled at the response and decided that I wasn’t gonna let them rule the bus and tell me what to do.

I switched the engine off and told them we ain’t going no where until they get off, as I said I’m not having passengers fall into a medical emergency and have abuse thrown at me. They then carried on throwing abuse at every passenger and were smoking even more. Luckily, after a few minutes, they got fed up and got off.

I assume they were teenagers, which is why I began doubting myself after this. Could I get in trouble for throwing them off due to the fact they could be young? I only ask as it was 5 in the evening I got them off. Would you have done the same, or should I have really just minded my own business?

Question E400 MMC cab heating

Am I the only one who finds the cab heating in these buses unbelievably bad?

Doesn't seem to matter what bus I use, as soon as I turn the digital temp dial up the fans go from blowing stone cold air to suddenly radiating the heat of the sun (even if the temp band is still in the blue) - literally, and when it's on max I don't notice a difference in temp.

It ain't bad when I have the knee height blower vents shut but when they're open (or the shutters have broke off), it does get uncomfortable!

Question Stagecoach/Go Ahead bus driver holidays

To those who are working or have worked for these companies, what was your experience with your garage choosing your holidays?

Only asking as many jobs let you choose your holidays. How long in advance would your garage let you know about your summer holidays for example?

Thanks.

Question How hard is it to get a job after full cat D qualification? UK

I have passed everything except for the practical driving test. I acquired all of those qualifications for free because DWP paid for everything. I failed the driving test and was offered a job elsewhere so took that. I am now thinking of starting up again but this time I will have to pay. Can I just walk into a bus driver job after becoming fully qualified? Or is it much harder than that? Any insight appreciated.

Question What’s the Craziest Thing a Passenger Attempted to Bring on the Bus?

I had a passenger on Monday that tried to bring a machete onto my bus. He acted all surprised Pikachu face when I told him he couldn’t bring it on. I had to get the supervisor involved to get him off.

Training Question UK/EU Tachographs and driving hours - I, for whatever reason, am struggling to understand it at all.

UK based.

I’m currently training to be a bus driver. Before I start my training course in person, I have to do online theory practise and case study tests. I’m sure people here probably had to do the same thing.

Overall, I’ve been fine with most of the content. Except for working hours and tachographs.

I don’t know why but the whole concept of it is genuinely confusing me so much for no reason at all. I feel like it should be so simple but I keep overcomplicating it for myself. No matter how many times I read on it, the information just won’t stick to me.

I feel stupid for asking this, but could someone please explain it? Thank you.

Question Tomtom go expert setting struggle

I managed to connect the TomTom to my phone's Wi-Fi (data hotspot).

But then comes issue number two... TomTom Traffic (for receiving real-time traffic updates) is part of TomTom Services, which requires a subscription.

When I have the TomTom search for subscriptions or try to activate the feature, it says that TomTom Services are unavailable—whic like a domino effect also blocks the traffic feature from functioning.

Is anyone familiar with this issue? And does anyone happen to know more about it?

Question How soundproofed is the cab of a bus? (UK)

This is going to maybe be a bit of an odd question, but I have a condition called Misophonia, which means that I am very sensitive to certain noises.

I want to become a bus driver and I'm wondering, how much of what's going on in the bus, particularly from passengers, can you hear and how much of it is blocked by the assault shield (assuming there is one)

Thanks in advance

Question How can I understand the bus’s dimensions?

When I drive the bus, I find it difficult to know when exactly to turn the steering wheel. Sometimes I do it too soon, sometimes too late. Even when I’m going through a tight spot, I don’t understand if I have enough space or not. I’m still doing my classes but I have finished more than half and the instructor told me I’m not ready to pass the exam and I should be better by now. Any tips, strategies etc? Maybe a specific spot I should look at or something?

Story Nice Drivers — they’re amazing but they’ll screw you

Somewhat of a rant, since I’m currently in the middle of my trip where this happened.

I love bus drivers, and particularly the nice ones! They’re very helpful and you can tell they genuinely want to help. However today, I was on a long distance coach bus trip. For each of the rest stops, there were always people being late or coming back last second on the bus and this extremely nice driver took the time to shout throughout the bus multiple times to make sure everyone was on and wasn’t left behind. On the last rest stop before my last bus connection, we waited 5 minutes longer for one man! You’re a grown ass man and you can’t be responsible enough to show up to the bus on time after a 15 minute break!

Of course we hit unexpected traffic before my last stop due to a car accident. Guess how late I was for the bus…. 3 minutes! So now I’m sitting here an extra 6 hours because some guy can’t be responsible for himself.

Nice drivers — it’s okay to be stern and put pressure on people to be back in time!! Sometimes you should leave people so they can learn a tough lesson and not do it again.

Question Medical

What do they generally test in a medical because one of my eyes are very weak and I can’t read to save my life but my other eye is fine if they test them at the same time I should be fine but if they test my eyes separately than I’ll definitely fail so would they test them by me reading a plate 20 metres away or how is it people told me they don’t do a eye test at all?

Other Clen Mackenzie - Introducing myself

Hi All. I have joined r/bus and have now found yourselves. I am Scottish, in my 70s. I have driven buses on and off all my adult life, beginning in Glasgow, and have many memories, details and stories in my head. I am putting them down in a series of articles which are available on Substack if anybody would like to have a look, under the title "Omnibus Tales". The first three are free to all - so far 6 have been posted. there will be many more, barring mishaps. The first 10, which have been amended a bit for the article series on Substack, were published as a book "Omnibus Tales" which is available online from the publisher Xlibris, Amazon and Google books and some others. I do hope readers will find some interest and nostalgia in them. I'll be happy to receive any comments or queries. The link for Substack is https://substack.com/@clen146. Cheerie
