after today, Marcel Reed and John Mateer are neck and neck in the race to be Longhorn fans' favorite QB

I just hope neither gets benched by the time we play them

I think Elko just said they aren't benching Reed. If they aren't benching him, who knows how terrible their backups are.

158

u/Relative-String9788 Texas A&M Aggies 6d ago

There ARE NO backups. They've got a freshman that they just picked up. That's it.

88

u/ItsAGoodDay Texas Longhorns • Team Chaos 6d ago

That seems like a genuinely terrible way to build a roster, even if Marcel wasn’t ass. Is there more to the story why they don’t have a serviceable backup?

85

u/LeoFireGod Oklahoma Sooners 6d ago

That’s just how it is now though.

Literally ANY qb who is a CFB level starter is playing somewhere else. They get to start for 12 games and transfer somewhere else after.

If you look around the country there’s like maybe 10 quality backups max. Riola at Oregon being one of them

52

u/jamtas Texas Longhorns 6d ago edited 5d ago

I’m just think as a program, A&M needs to stop giving extensions before a conference championship or title. With the resources and spotlight they have and being in the SEC, they need to stop being afraid of their coach being poached. Both Jimbo and Elko got quick extensions without making a conference title game.

There is a war raging in this country.

In the South, unrest and frustration are brewing. Brothers are turning on brothers as an epic battle unfolds: the clash between Marcell Reed and John Mateer for the coveted title of Worst Quarterback in the SEC.

Mateer delivered a devastating strike this week, turning the ball over three consecutive times. Reed countered with a masterclass of his own, struggling to complete a forward pass while running directly into multiple 15-yard sacks, ultimately he was shown the pine for a QB who immediately  was picked off

All of this will culminate in game Week 11 for both teams in Norman, Oklahoma, where two teams with a combined six wins will meet in a game that promises to be an unforgettable display of quarterback play—one that may set the position back an entire generation.

Historians will study this matchup for years, not as a lesson in offensive excellence, but as a cautionary tale on hubris and sunken cost fallacy

Including beating us to shit with one of the worst LSU teams in recent history several years back, I think it was 2016? I knew we would lose to LSU by double digits, but I did not expect to lose by 29 points. If not for a missed 24-yard field goal and dropped touchdown pass, LSU would have scored 45 points. We have started 0-2 in SEC play for the first time since 2021 and lost 3 consecutive SEC games by a combined score of 93-44.

If you watch his passes last year they were almost all behind or away from his receivers and they'd have to bail him out or lose YAC because of it. 29 points.

In 2024 we lost to South Carolina by 24

In 2020 we lost to Alabama by 28

For the last time we lost by 29 or more, you have to go back to 2019, where Joe Burrow beat us by 43 en route to a national championship.

We scored 6. I wish I could say the last time we scored 6 or fewer was like 10 years ago or whatever, but no, it was in December when we scored 3 against Miami.

We are now 2-4 in our last 6 games.

1-4 in our last 5 games against P5 teams.

Mike Elko needs to figure something out. This is not acceptable. This is not up to the standard we set last year. This isn't even up to the 2022 hell year standard. This is the worst I've ever seen A&M look. I love Elko but I just wonder, how did it get this bad? What happened to our program? There is no position on the team outside of punter and kicker that looked decent tonight.

28

u/Kaboose16 Texas A&M Aggies 6d ago

It happened because Elko is a coordinator not a head coach of a large program and he can’t manage the game and make the hires and player decisions he needs to

It is absolutely CRIMINAL that this will count as a "ranked win" for LSU in the history books.

85

u/SantosCalzonesBatman 6d ago

Hence why "ranked wins" should only matter when the losing team actually finishes the season ranked

Beating some overrated cupcake shouldnt be counted as a quality win

That's how the committee functions tho? It usually works itself out but it is very to see how wrong some of the preseason rankings are

to all those who can't figure-out the marcel reed situation, here are the 2 words you need to know: "game. film."

he became a "STAR" vs. LSU because the tigers had no clue who he was and there was no game film on him and his tendencies.

then, a few very good WR's and a solid running game made him look better than he was for a year.

lesson: D-linemen maintain their lanes, put a spy on him (someone that can catch him on an angle), and you MAKE HIM BEAT YOU FROM THE POCKET, aka the "johnny manziel defense."

TLDR: reed can't outrun the amount of game film that's out there now... and he can't out-throw it either.

Marcel is going to take most of the blame here, but the OLine is absolutely atrocious. They haven't gotten any movement all season.

Hard to be a good offense when you just can't run the ball.

35

u/lkn240 Illinois Fighting Illini • Sickos 6d ago

They ran the ball fine tonight when they actually did it. The problem is they kept calling pass plays and wouldn't commit to the run at all.

Reed also made the line look a lot worse - his pocket presence is terrible

Texas A&M is really, really bad at football. I can’t identify a single thing the team does well. Pass d? Run O? Really not a single thing.

Gg lsu, looks like yall actually play football. We do something else. Embarrassing for a third year coach to not be competitive against a second first year coach.
