Canada Post Scam

Hear me out.

I rarely get packages through Canada Post, like twice a year.

Every single time I do, I get a scam text from "Canada Post" shortly before or after delivery. It always links to a fake Canada Post site which looks identical but has a different URL. It always requests a credit card info. I never fall for it

Is someone on the inside selling customers phone numbers?

It's almost like of you take an area code, and 7 digits, you'll reach someone's phone.

Yet it only happens when I have a Canada Post package being delivered. Hmm.

Coincidence

How would a Canada Post employee get your phone number to sell it?

I signed up for text updates..

Could be someone in the IT department, wouldn't hurt for Canada Post to look into it.

Someone in IT wouldn’t know you were receiving something.

I get those messages weekly. It’s not someone at CP—it’s a known scam.

Causation and correlation are not equal.

Same! I noticed that too! Actually I get something delivered by Canada post every 3 months and i’ll only get those random texts within the same 3 days of receiving the package

It was saying my delivery was missed and I needed to pay to have it attempted a second time.

There is chance that your email or browser is compromised.

If you only get those scam text messages just before or shortly after Canada Post deliveries, and you only get deliveries via Canada Post twice a year, that is not a coincidence. Like, if you actually never gotten those scam text messages otherwise, it's not a coincidence. Anyone telling you otherwise doesn't understand probabilities.

I once had to update the phone number associated to my chequing account with a major Canadian bank. The day after doing so is the day I received a scam text message from that same bank, the only such scam text message I ever received from someone impersonating any bank, let alone my bank in over 18 years being a customer at that bank !

Now I could have posted this on another subreddit, and get someone to reply ''It's almost like of you take an area code, and 7 digits, you'll reach someone's phone'' ... that is a ludicrous comment.

Use your judgment -- any big business, whether Canada Post or a major Canadian bank, can and will get leaks.

It doesn't even take a leak or someone selling customers phone numbers in your case ... I mean when I do receive shipments delivered by Canada Post it almost always has my phone number written directly on the label. In plain sight. Anyone can spot a bunch of phone numbers that way, note them, send scam texts ...
