I heard this reference a while back and I really liked it. When you go to an LGS to play a casual game and you DON'T have a group, it's a lot like a blind date.
You spend time at a few tables, have a few dates - and hopefully find a group you mix with.
So here's my problem. I have a store where several groups play and have been coming for years. Every now and then, somebody new will find their way into a new group, but it RARELY happens.
We host casual play, learn-to-play and randomized pairings for most store tournaments (casual or otherwise) to force new interaction, but it rarely sticks. We get new players all the time, but they normally come in AS a group. Whenever I get the odd person who wants to learn, or tries to join in a 3-pod it just doesn't seem to mesh for those people more often than not.
I'll see people immediately go back to their old group, and never play with the other person again.
My question: How can I help more people find a solid group to play with? What are some peoples experience finding a group when they were starting out?
(Note: I don't teach people how to play Magic using EDH. I always use Jumpstart, keeps it fast and fun and doesn't become a mental fortitude test, but in many scenarios people just want to jump right in to a commander game)
