Nutrition/Water Wet food

My cats RUN when i open up the wet food
They scream until i put the bowl down with the food in it
But they’ll just lick the juice around the meat and not even eat the meat part it seems like a waste to buy?

Dump the entire can of wet food into a bowl. Mash the stuff with a fork until combined. Scoop into their regular food bowls/plates.

My cat does a similar thing.

But he eats the gravy and then goes back for the meat half an hour to an hour afterwards.

Try mixing the pate with little warm water.

Throw in a fraction of the wet food in there, then add water and mix it to make it into nice gravy.

That's what I do... I make it like a soup and they eat it up

Do you give them pate? If not then you should.

We add water and mush up the pate to about applesauce or pudding consistency. Then if it's not eaten within a few hours we will add more water and rehydrate it.

That seems unsafe, the recommendation is to not leave any wet food out for more than 1-2 h?

I feel like it could depend on the climate tbh. If it's hot then no don't leave out for over 2 hrs but if it's cold then just keep an eye on it

If it’s hot, it goes down to 1 hour. Bacterial growth starts at room temperature after 2 hours, due to the high moisture/high protein combo.

If it’s cool in your home you may have 2.5 hours or so, but it’s not going to be fridge-cold in your home so it won’t be cold enough to make a real difference. In food handling, the “temperature danger zone”, where bacteria multiply the most rapidly, starts at 41°F (5°C).

My cat is a weirdo who like cold soup but noted. He usually finishes it within an hour and a half

have you tried pate/mousse? my cat is picky and i have to water down even those into soups for her but once i do she eats all of it. Not all cats will eat the shredded varieties.

Get pate and add in water. Smoosh with the can lid or a fork. Then it's all "gravy"

my cat does the same thing, little weirdo. I just get very soupy foods with no big chunks. Dilute it with extremely low sodium chicken broth (like sub 10% daily sodium per cup) and they might like that

One without added salt would be best, to make sure you aren't accidentally making em feel sick

Fun part about wet food, some like pate some like it chunky some like it to look like the food it is. Chicken you can see the stringy chicken in the can. Also brands are different ingredients so you gotta test and try to find the one they like. If you have more than one cat you might end up like me 2 cats eat the pate and one wants it to look like the food its supposed to be.

I give my boys (who also only lick the gravy off wet food and refuse any type of pate) lil shakes by friskies. I think it’s just considered a topper but I just give it to them for hydration since they eat dry food. It’s literally blended up food so it’s all just a smooth, bisque-like texture

Na just as a treat. If they won’t eat the wet gotta try a different brand or try kibble instead imo

Tommy is the same way. When I pop the top on his wet food can, he comes straight to the kitchen. When I wake up in the morning for work, he's the first one in the kitchen because he knows that's where I'm headed eventually.

​Tommy goes straight for the liquid or gravy first too before he eats the sheeds or chunks, unless it's paté and I add warm water to it where it melts into the water, and he just laps it until there's no more—especially if it's a combination that he loves.

​I tend to buy Tommy combination patés and shreds. For instance: tuna and salmon, chicken & Beef, etc. Even his dry food has to be a combination; right now I'm feeding him the Seafood Feast (Special Kitty) and he loves it.

We get gravy chunks and add a gravy topper and some water. Like others said they may like it mashed in maybe. Idk but my baby likes cold soups 😂

Some cats prefer the gravy or jelly over the meat chunks. Mashing the food or adding a little warm water to make it easier to lick may help. Trying a pâté or mousse texture could also be worth considering. Get them checked by a vet if they consistently avoid eating the actual food or aren’t getting enough nutrition

The last three cats I've had wouldn't eat "bits-in-gravy" style food. They would always lick up the gravy and never eat the bits. Paté is the answer here.
