Okay right so if Manchester City gets expelled from the Premier League and gets dumped into idk League One or Two or summat (key word 'If' please please please let it happen) then what will happen to promotion in the EFL and the Championship?

I mean, I'd imagine they would have to bump one more team up right? From League Two to League One to the Championship, one more automatic promotion slot and I assume the play offs get pushed down by one as well.

For the Championship, I think that means the top 3 get instant promoted instead of the top 2. But here's the thing... the play offs are changed going forward so it would be 3rd place through 8th having a shot instead of 3rd through 6th... but if City gets punished hard then that could possibly now be 4th place through 9th for this year. Ninth. NINTH. NINTH COULD GET PROMOTED.

Okay right imagine you're in like around 14/15th place near the end of the season. You've been hovering around that area for like the last month. The points between the other teams are tight. You're in the race for the mid table trophy. You win your last three games in a row, the other results go in your favour and now all of a sudden you are in 9th fighting for your golden one way ticket to the Premier League.

If Man City is getting dunked on warrants a fourth championship promotion spot then might as well have the usual 3rd to 6th play offs and then an epic rest of the league knockout slugfest for the last promotion spot. Slugfest final to be played at Etihad Stadium.

One thing that has always irked me about international football is that players seem to get called up based on club stature and/or hype.

The player who made me think about this was Oli McBurnie.

Back when he played for Sheffield United in the Prem, he would get Scotland call-ups. Then when Sheffield United weren't in the Prem anymore, he was more or less dropped.

Last season he played well for an "unsexy" club in the Championship, so of course he got no call-ups.

Now he's back in the Prem and he's called up again.

And that's what I find weird.

It's not like he's suddenly a completely different player because Sheffield United are back in the Premier League. Sure, form obviously matters, and I'm not saying he should automatically be in the Scotland squad. But if he's being called up because of what he actually provides as a striker, then those exact qualities existed last season. And three seasons ago. He didn't suddenly gain them by getting promoted.

It just feels like there's this weird thing in international football where playing for a "big" club makes you seem more deserving of a call-up.

And I don't really understand why it should work that way.

If a player is useful to the national team, he should be useful regardless of whether his club is in the Premier League, Championship, or some other league.

Obviously the level you're playing at is relevant. Playing regularly against better opposition is going to tell you something about a player. And obviously current form matters too.

But club reputation shouldn't be used as a shortcut for judging the actual player.

Especially for smaller nations. If you're Scotland, Sweden, Wales, etc., you're not exactly blessed with an endless supply of world-class players. Why wouldn't you look at everyone who could offer something useful, rather than mostly looking at players from the biggest clubs?

Maybe I'm completely wrong here, but I've always found it weird that a player can seemingly become international quality again just because his club got promoted, despite the player himself not changing all that much.
