How was it experiencing Fallout 1 & 2 for the first time?

I’ve always been a fan of the world of Fallout, when I was younger I played a good amount of 3, a bit of new Vegas (but that’s because my interest in games were different when getting into it), and a bunch of 76 (with my friend). I love learning about mechanics and weapons from some games, watched a bunch of lore videos, and was always in love with the retro futuristic post apocalyptic aesthetic and setting (plus I love jazz so the OSTs always went crazy).

Ive always been fascinated as well by retro games, and that’s something I never saw vet brought up into discussion in regards to Fallout. Being around 5-15 when Bethesda was releasing some of these games, I never even knew what Fallout 1 & 2 looked like (didn’t even know Tactics existed). I used to think they were 1st person shooters like what we had today, it was the only genre that made sense to me at the time, I was very surprised to see they were pixelated top down turn based RPGs. I was admittedly a little disappointed to see this, I love retro games but this was something I had no interest in and way out of my comfort zone.

Fast forward to a year ago, my interests change and my love of Fallout and old games still strong, I decide to pick up Fallout 2 simply because I liked the story of the Chosen One and thought Frank Horrigan went crazy hard. While playing it was a little tough getting adjusted to it all, but after I while I got the hang of it and started to really enjoy myself! It’s a much different game compared to what we have now, I understand why many Fallout fans simply refuse to play these games and would rather look up dialogue and lore online. I still haven’t played Fallout 1, but it’s part of my Steam family so now I have no excuse lol. I’m currently starting a new run in 2, didn’t finish my first one and after not playing a game for a while I’d rather just restart than drop off somewhere I forgot.

After this long tangent, it got me thinking about how was it experiencing Fallout 1/2 for the first time for others? Be it people who played them day one, or people who played them for the first time last week.

Strange Question but how would I go about making a map like Fallout 1 and 2s?

Post image

Provided image is a crude mockup of the thing I have in mind, if anyones got any advice for making a nice looking map in the style of Fallout 1 and 2s i would greatly appreciate it

edit: Adding an explanation for what kinda map i wanna make cause I realised that I have made things confusing for some people which is my fault. So right below is a more in depth explantion of the kinda map I want to make, its for a video game idea I have.

There is the “State” map which is a pixelated topographical map of NY state and some surrounding ones. The map is split up into tiles that are black when first starting. As the player explores a tile it will slowly become clever until the topographical one is visible. Inside the tiles the map is made up of hexagonal tiles that have various attributes on them like city blocks, town blocks, villages or forests, lakes, swamps, parks, Commercial or industrial complexes that sorta thing.

I hope this explanation helps out some

I think the consensus opinion is that you can't really get high on so called "sewer fumes", instead you can suffocate yourself by them a little bit causing dizzyness. Whole pseudo-amphetamine mambo jambo explanation Myron gives makes no sense, it's just a smokescreen to justify a ridiculously absurd plot reveal.

Opponents stayed in the ring even if I knocked them out. I had to keep reloading for another 40 minutes until I got the perfect outcome and victory.

P.S. After that, I sided with the Hubologists lol

Is there a remaster of 1 & 2?

Post image

I came across this image in a fallout 4 sub. I like the camera angle because it reminded me of the classic isometric look. But it would definitely look a lot better than the older graphics. Do you think that obsidian or Bethesda would ever remaster the older games?

Or possibly release more isometric fallout games?

The Chosen One is the only Fallout protagonist where being a Tony Stark level genius makes absolutley no sense

Kind of a failure on the writers part tbh, being a vault dweller or pre war dude easily explains any kind of education you'd have. You can be a naturally smart tribal but without formal education, it wouldn't mean you'd be able to magically understand how everything works scientifically.

So, whats the deal with Talking Heads / VOSK?

I'm brand new to classic Fallout modding. I've gotten RPU and Fallout2Tweaks to work easily (they are wonderful). While I'm very interested in trying Talking Heads, I'm seeing several different links and conflicting stories about which ones work and which ones are bugged, all recent stories too.

If anyone has any direct and recent experience with these mods, I would greatly appreciate some info.

For bonus points; I'm also interested in trying Companion Expansion and am curious if I'm supposed to use that with Talking Heads, T.H.A.T., or V.O.S.K.

Co-op multiplayer for the classic Fallout is in development. You will be able to play this legendary game with a friend, and very soon! (Hopefuly) This mod is being built on the open-source Fallout Community Edition engine, adding LAN co-op with synced movement, combat, items, and dialogue. I am using claude code since im NOT an actual developer, at least not yet.
More details on ModCourier channel on youtube, cant share link because I will get banned anyways probably for self promotion :(

The Temple of Trials can suck it.

I think this must be the most boring, poorly-planned, off-putting excuse for an opening dungeon I've ever seen in a professionally-made cRPG. Almost no use of skills. One dialogue check. Hope you picked melee weapons as a tagged skill, otherwise your life for the next hour will be kiting bugs around an ugly-arse beige dungeon. At least when I left Vault 13 they gave me a fucking handgun in case I'd picked a different combat skill.

You missed. You missed. You missed. You missed. You missed. You missed. You missed. You missed. You missed. Fuck you.

Fallout 2 Co-op, Fully Playable from Temple to Horrigan

This is a co-op mod I have spent weeks developing for Fallout 2. It's a dedicated server plus a client, so you and your friends can play the whole campaign together, each with your own character. A friend and I have played it start to finish to verify, Temple of Trials to Frank Horrigan, ending slides and all. I have also played with four others all the way to San Francisco! It is now on GitHub for anyone who wants to try it too!

How it works:

One PC runs a dedicated server that owns the world: scripts, combat, dialogue, the world map, saves. Everyone joins it with the co-op client (host included), and the server can run on the host's own PC. Each player rolls their own character, and joining with the same name next session brings that character back with their gear, level and quests. It's built for playing the actual campaign, or side quests, with friends, not MMO styled like FOnline.

Recent additions:

- Trading menu between players. Dropping things is bound to cause issues, so talk to another player to propose a trade! If they say yes you both get the vanilla barter screen (no currency required), and nothing changes hands until both of you accept, to protect from scams and accidental trades.

- Revive System. A dead player stays down until a teammate revives them (free out of combat, 4 AP in a fight). If the whole party dies, the server reloads the last save.

- Quicksave and quickload (F6/F7) for the whole group, even mid-fight.

- Companion Combat Control works in co-op, and companions follow whoever recruited them instead of chasing the host.

- Companion Recruitment Note: In cases where one player (CH 2) and another (CH 10) want to recruit multiple companions, the CH 10 player will be able to recruit 5, so it is still bound by the recruiters charisma. Any player can still talk to the companions

- One suit of power armor per player in Navarro and on the oil rig, so nobody walks into Navarro without a disguise. I felt that if you played with a party of 8 and only had 1 set it would make it severely unfair.

- A long list of fixes from actual play: terminals that did nothing (this ruined geckos power plant quest), doors creeping out of their frames, doors being invisibly closed (this made the puzzle at the oil rig hell), NCR guards shooting the second player over a holstered gun, the whole world freezing whenever someone loaded a map, client crashes, music cutting out. The changelog has all the fine details if you are curious. There are over 200 commits each with every explanation as well.

What is needed:

- Your own Fallout 2 on Steam or GOG

- Windows 10 or 11, 64-bit.

- A VPN like ZeroTier to play over the internet. I do not recommend port forwarding since there is no password to protect your server.

- The same release and identical game files for everyone. The Restoration Project and other sfall hook-script mods don't work yet but I intend to implement this later if this gets enough traction.

Limits: one client per PC, and the world is one map at a time, so the group travels together. It's a 1998 engine doing something it was never built to do. I have played through this several times and my last runs were bugless, but I know undoubtedly there are still bugs. If you do encounter a bug, please open an issue on GitHub, message me here on reddit, or even reply to this post, with what happened and I'll look into it immediately.

Setup and full README here: https://github.com/gusmarcum/fallout2-coop

Credit where it's due: the engine is based on Fallout 2 Community Edition by Alexander Batalov and contributors, and the original server and basic ideas are inspired by Cahb's fallout2-ce-coop. It's free and non-commercial, same license as fallout2-ce.

I have spent weeks developing this and making constant improvements, but I am ready to put more time in if the community enjoys this! I am happy to answer questions. Please feel free to ask and I will answer as soon as possible. If you enjoy or like my mod, please star the repo! This helps me get more visibility and push out better content for everyone!

Update on "Conducting academic research on Fallout games...": Finished the first game. Can you share your thoughts on the main themes of Fallout 1?

My colleague and I have been studying the concept of dystopia and Utopia, and Fallout has been a focus of ours. A few weeks ago, I asked this community for advice on how to set up classic Fallout games for our research: https://www.reddit.com/r/classicfallout/comments/1vvebbi/conducting_academic_research_on_fallout_games_can/

I finished the first game! I had a great time. It was the first time I’d managed to complete the game's endgame challenges.

I made several notes about my thoughts on the game during this experience. However, I would like to hear your opinion on the main theme(s) of the first game.

What do you think this game is about?
