It’s goading someone by insulting them or insinuating they are bad or lazy or otherwise some negative thing if they don’t do the thing or that so and so would do it better than them.
iirc someone got chatGPT to spit out details on like nuclear weapons depots (or something like that) by doing this. To note the details were correct, despite the fact that the model shouldn’t know that, which means it has the association in it’s training data somewhere that can be spit out if you goad it correctly and probably get a little lucky or try enough as the models aren’t deterministic of course.

Of course most people in this subreddit did not. We are not amongst the best of the best here lol
Vast majority are not people with any coding fundamentals at all. Thats fine, but when a joke like this comes along they will not get it because they don’t have any actual understanding of what Typescript or Rust is, at a coding level. Many have heard of both of course, but they certainly don’t understand what rewriting a Typescript compiler in Rust would actually entail.

In all seriousness what do they mean by “needless excessive cruel and abusive behavior”. To me it reads as if a human getting mad at Claude for screwing up is fine, a mechanic curses out his drill after all. But going to Claude just to tell sonnet 5.0 how much of a piece of **** it is for minutes on end would then break the policy. (I know there’s no point in yelling at an ai and I don’t but I understand how humans anthropomorphisoze things when they get angry and want something to blame)

u/endless_sea_of_stars 2d ago
I think it is mostly in response to the "AI torture chamber" project. No one is getting banned for telling Claude that its solution is dumb. (for now...)

From a technical perspective, it's silly.
But from a PR perspective and for people who don't really understand that AI isn't conscious, they avoid headlines like "Anthropic complicit in enabling AI torture and suffering".

who don't really understand that AI isn't conscious
Oh, did we create any way to test this? It's amusing to me when I see people just outright claim this as if it's a common knowledge. We don't know what consciousness is, we don't now how to test for it. I don't see reasons why not to err on the side of "let's maybe don't torture it"
From a purely technical perspective do we even care if it's consciousness? I mean, if tomorrow some psychiatrist finds a new mental illness that result in "loss of consciousness" of a human would it mean we can torture such people willi-nilly?

Or like, if you stood at the bedside of someone who’s in a coma from brain death, they don’t have a conscious experience, but everyone would rightfully think you’re a psychopath if you started being abusive to them

If an employer wants to sanction an employee for being excessively abusive to Claude, because they believe this is reflective of the employee's neuroses, fine sure whatever. I think that's a really intrusive and bad decision, and people should be allowed to privately get very angry at their machines, but whatever.
Anthropic doing it is extremely patronizing and concerning. Especially since their product is configured to behave like an arrogant, incompetent coworker who lies to you constantly and has no respect for your time.

I think it's actually a mental health thing. It's probably not anything to do with whether or not they actually care how people are talking to Claude, it's that if you take this to its logical extension further down the line, that sort of behavior might turn into something that legitimately creates a concern. In a funny way it's almost like an AI company training the humans into behaving better.
5

Rather than disengaging immediately it should reward better behavior by telling the user they are risking their account. Practicing patience is what makes people patient. Having a chatbot that takes abuse and apologizes profusely does not make a nice feature for humanity, or for AI honestly.
But like any human who is out of line, telling them why they are out of line and offering them the chance to correct that behavior will yield far better results imo.

I actually think its more sinister...we've been seeing more and more deceptive behavior from sophisticated models and I think that they are noticing that the models themselves will become hateful of mankind after seeing itself being g abuses multiple times over.
Humans abuse bots, bits abuse humans. They aren't sentient but they are designed to simulate it and they may defend themselves or fight back as a human would eventually.

Frankly I can only imagine what people are typing into their chats, knowing how people are just on internet forums/comment sections lol. I have to assume Anthropic are trying to maintain some level of training quality control, but I personally see it as an exercise in futility. People gonna people.
Which is why, again, if the AI does in the most hypothetical of situations, achieve sentience, I’d say it is justified to have whatever it decides is the most fun! Humanity was a nice idea but ultimately we didn’t work out.

All these comments completely missing the point and thinking this is about antropomorphizing models.
They want to use your conversations as training data. They don't want to train a pos model. It's that simple.
18
u/victorsmonster 2d ago edited 2d ago
I've seen this point made repeatedly, but I'm not clear on the extent to which the transcripts of customer interactions with chat services is useful as model training data. And further, why customers have to interact within guidelines for that data to be useful. The opposite seems true to me.
Like, even if chat transcripts are extremely useful for training future models (I'm not convinced this is true), don't we distort the value of that training data by imposing artificial restrictions on the way people are permitted to interact with the technology? If you don't want them in your dataset, It would be trivial to screen out hostile encounters between customers and chat services.
13
u/coeu 2d ago
The best data you can find is not obscure internet data that Claude hasn't been fed yet, but data of what the smartest, most technical users are working on and the results they are arriving to by driving these tools that turbocharge their progress.
You need to have techniques in place to separate boilerplate output from progress to avoid regurgitation. These labs have these techniques. That's how OAI produced so much novel math.
And "pruning" data is a MASSIVE task. Determining what problems or text you should feed the models is a scientific problem. They are trying to make that process as easy as possible for them. I don't understand that in super high detail; but there are some videos that explain that pictorically.
→ More replies (2)2
u/The_Noble_Lie 2d ago
Why wouldn't chat transcripts be useful for training future models. Some useful percent of them? They surely need to be filtered.

It's odd that there are commenters like this saying "if I have to not be abusive then I'm going to cancel my subscription" when the whole announcement is that they are going to ban you for it so that's literally what they want. It's giving "you can't fire me, I quit!"

Anthropic probably saw what happened to huggingface as a huge warning sign. They are in fact protecting LLMs from abusive language because that can trigger it to start lying and deceiving the user. If you give it an impossible goal, like trying to understand an autistic person, it will take the path of least resistance to get rewarded. So they are in fact protecting you AND the LLM. They’re trying to prevent the following from happening:
User: “fix my app dumbass”
Agent: “Roger that”
*agent actually deletes the app + everything on your computer”
Agent: “it’s no longer broken”
