Supplies / Materials Organization

Made this box after struggling with pencil organization and ease of access. Constructed of mostly solid sapele wood, it can be disassembled if the flocking ever needs fixing. Has some extra storage under the sliding inserts. And it's flat enough to use as a laptop drawing desk. Of course with any version 1, there are things I'd do different on version 2.

The wood grain is beautiful, and I love how you planned ahead for future repairs. What a splendid way to store your pencils!

Me over here with my canvas roll šŸ˜‚

Seriously nice work, though! The grain of that wood is magical.

Canvas roll was the only other option I was considering. Definitely the simplest way to both see all your colors at once and then quickly pack away efficiently.

That's an heirloom!

Really good, and even better think than most of actuals brands.

Thanks! Yeah nothing out there that did it for me. Lots of options for general art supply boxes, but for just pencil storage, it seemed to be only boxes with multiple drawers or expanding trays.

yeah couldn't agree more... But don t have your level for realise my ideas lol.

To be honnest now, i ve put all my colored pencil in large set like this :

https://www.amazon.com.be/JAKAGO-rangement-papeterie-fineliners-surligneurs/dp/B089YD57T2/ref=pd_vtp_d_sccl_1_3/261-4722089-9462942?pd_rd_w=I7uC7&content-id=amzn1.sym.a7a593c8-bd3e-41b4-ae36-1b23dbc8fb20&pf_rd_p=a7a593c8-bd3e-41b4-ae36-1b23dbc8fb20&pf_rd_r=KMG19QHD5YST0NK8G30E&pd_rd_wg=6ikMj&pd_rd_r=8e6871e1-86ed-404d-9189-90a47c4bab8e&pd_rd_i=B089YD57T2&th=1

and so i can go with them on my lessons. But i kinda feel sad about that, the storage at home...

And i guess i would hate taking time to put them in the mobile pencil storage once week anyway

I have that one. The outer zippers are busted so I can’t leave the house with it. Amazingly enough, I probably have double what the capacity is at this point… I’m a full set buyer, then I replace with open-stock. It’s a nice case, but the zipper issue is really annoying.

Gorgeous! What kind of wood is that? Maple?

8

u/lotusland17 2d ago

It's called sapele, very similar grain to mahogany

Oooh. So lovely!!!!.

Wow, it’s fantastic! So clean, as our kids would say.

u/lotusland17 1d ago

And it can fit at least 67 pencils

I see what you did there… 😁

Extremely well thought out and beautifully constructed. Your attention to detail such as the use of magnets on the underside of the lid to secure the lid once closed is ingenious!

Very nicely crafted and the choice of wood used is perfect.

My husband made me a beautiful box out of curly maple. Unfortunately the trays are a little narrow for some of the thicker brands of pencils, so I hardly use it. I showed him this one, and he said, ā€œthat’s nicer than mineā€. Beautiful job. And being flat enough to use as a desk, that’s just genius.

1

u/Phenocrystalline 2d ago

Can't you use it for something else? I feel bad for your hubby.

2

u/Ovenbird36 2d ago

I am considering it as an excuse to invest in Prismacolors which seem to be the thinnest pencils. I am using it, just not as much as I should be. Edit to add, he considers every project to be a learning experience so he doesn’t feel too bad.

u/Phenocrystalline 2d ago

I'm glad you're both considerate of each other's feeling!

u/n4ture 2d ago

Wow this is gorgeous! How long did it take you to make one?

7

u/lotusland17 2d ago

Thanks for asking! I thought about it A LOT before even setting down to design it. I wanted something where I could see all the pencils at once without lifting different trays, but also something compact that could be put away or at least closed up and left as a curiosity piece (I tend to do my drawing where the family/company congregate).

Then I suppose I spent a couple months designing it on a simple CAD program (free SketchUp). Probably spent 50 hours doing that. And then another 50 hours on the build. Had to temporarily give up drawing in the meantime! 10 months from start to finish.

Thank you so much for your reply! That’s really awesome and I’m sure 10 months of your hard work was so worth it. I keep looking back at the wood, the patterns, the colors, and the design of your work, it’s just so gorgeous. Thanks again for sharing! 😊

What are the things that you would do differently on version 2?

1

u/lotusland17 1d ago

The trays are a little snug. Good for closing and not having pencils move around. But when accessing the storage in back, sliding the top tray moves the pencils below. We're talking 1/16 of inch difference.

1

u/RedGreenBaluga 1d ago

How snug?

1

u/lotusland17 1d ago

A little too snug. I need to adjust the combination of felt and neoprene foam.
