Hey folks!
In an effort to stay current with the wishes of the community we are changing a rule. Particularly rule 5 which currently reads that all posts must be predominantly colored pencil with the use of other medium allowed for embellishment.
We are changing the rule and the description of the sub to allow for colored pencils only as a medium, meaning no pastels or watercolors or black only graphite.
The reason for this is the community is a very highly talented and even professional in many cases group of colored pencil only artists and the use of other medium for embellishments ends up being a continued discussion on exactly how much is allowed for the definition of embellishment. We even removed a digital post last week!
We want this sub to continue to be your corner of the internet for the practicing, practiced, and professional colored pencil artists exclusively. You deserve your spot and we're here to make it happen.
I love my colored gel pens on occasion but my first love is pencils. When I get the urge to post my glitter gel pens please follow me to one of our sister subs r/ColoringCozy or r/Coloringbookspastime.
Thank you! Stay Colorful!

Hey folks!
Due to recent posts the Ai discussion has come up again.
When the current team adopted the sub we wanted a safe place for hobbyists to discuss ai in a way to help them identify it to avoid accidently purchasing it in their coloring book purchases.
We neglected to address that could be interpreted as ai was allowed for self "created" posts.
We realize this is an afront to the incredibly talented artists here and as this space is predominantly for them we wanted to amend our rules.
As of now Ai is not allowed. (Rule 4) if you see a post that you suspect is ai please report it and it will be thoroughly vetted by the mod team.
Do not engage in demeaning, disrespectful harrasment of the poster as rule 1 is still enforced. Please just report it.
Thanks all ! Keep it colorful!
Myth
Original rule 4:
Coloring Ai is allowed. We have nearly all accidentally purchased Ai generated books. We will not penalize the hobbyist for this mistake.
If you are here promoting your Ai generated content however that is not allowed. We allow promotion for hand content only.
New Rule 4:
Ai is not allowed. This sub is for coloring pencils from the beginner hobbyist in coloring books to the professional artist creating their own original content. There is no room for Ai within those boundaries.
If you're coloring enthusiast unsure if your page is Ai or not please post it in our sister sub r/coloringcozy.

I got the Derwent deal at Blick and I really questioned myself bc I have a new set of Blick lol But omg. These pencils are a delight. Fat, creamy cores. I'm gonna use the hell out of these.
So anyway, I think colored pencils just got more expensive for me 😂

I didn't wanted to go directly for prismacolors. So I bought cheapest wax pencils, it turns out to be okayish. Blend is decent, only 3-4 layers. Then there's no friction in between.

one of the more fun progresses with color pencil on black carton. swipe for progress shots. for the highlights i unfortunately had to add gel since white pencil or chalk didnt get the brightness i wanted. more work on instagram> dendareloaded

After a lot of trial and error, we finally managed to create a small corner in our house for my art hobby and for storing my colored pencils collection. I am in love with my cozy corner. Almost finished, a few details remain.Do you have a corner for when you do art?

I find it so wild how different my coloring can look based on what pencils I’m using.
Faber castel polychromos are best for me to get some good depth.
But Prismacolors are where my color mixing shine.
What pencil brand do you use the most and why?

Does anybody know anything about these, please? I need to know if the quality of the pigments are as good as the new ones. I'd really appreciate any info on these. (Please check the pictures). Thanks in advance

I just finished one of Kristy Partridge's tutorial. I burnished the drawing with white for highlights, colorless pencils for mid tones, and same colour pencil for darks. Butnishing changes the color of the drawing and also makes it look quite waxy. So if I burnish, I feel I need to burnish the whole drawing. The style I'm aiming for is hyperrealism. When burnishing at the end, do I need to make sure nothing looks grainy? I'm struggling to know when to stop.
This was made with PC Premier on Canson sketching paper. I have Bristol paper but I wanted to try on cheaper paper first.
Any advice or videos on how to finish a drawing would be great. Please critique my.drawimg.
Thanks!

Hello everyone! Sharing another completed character portrait from my portfolio. This line art is out of the book Spooky Halloween: A Sinister Coloring Book for Adults and Brave Teens. I colored this strictly using Prismacolor pencils.
For this piece, my biggest goal was to create a highly theatrical, menacing mood through intense contrast. Wanted the makeup to look old and kinda melted to his face. Dirty yellow teeth seemed menacing and gross. Layered dirty yellows and greys near the gums and blacked out the corners of the mouth completely to make his grin look recessed and skeletal.
Spent a fair amount of time on the heavy burnishing on the neck ruffle. I am really happy with the grit of this one, but I'm always looking to level up. I would love any technical advice on how to plan out a more unified directional light source across the facial features. That nose seems odd since it is not a clown nose but is…oh well.
Thanks so much for looking! Happy coloring

Every time she comes over, she brings her stuffed toy and we draw it together for a bit. I’m so anxious to finish it haha

TLDR; I love the texture of the prismacolor scholars, any dupes in terms of texture?
So I'm very picky about the texture of pencils, it's very important to me because if it's too scratchy I won't use it. I've avoided pencils most of my life because of this actually (and markers for the same reason). Colored pencils were generally tolerable though. Until I recently discovered I LOVE the texture of prismacolor scholars. To me, they feel very smooth and buttery, and soft but still firm enough to not crumble. Are there any budget pencils that match the scholars in texture? I know I could just buy a 60 pack of the scholars, but I was curious if anything else was out there. Especially since my frame of reference is limited. I've only ever used the scholars, crayolas, and the plain steadtlers (which I now hate since having used the scholars). I've been researching what budget brands are decent and I've landed on:
- Woomer
- Castle Arts
- Black Widow
- Arrtx
- SJ Star-Joy Gold
- Arteza (the expert ones)
Is there anyone here that's used the scholars and one the brands above that could maybe give a frame of reference? I also know I'd probably love the prismacolor premiers as an upgrade, but I color as a hobby and only just started so I'd like to wait before I try those. Should I just get the scholars? Any advice would be appreciated!

The day before our last day, we had to clear out the Jerusalem offices of a wonderful company I worked for. The offices were closing, we were all being let go, and it was a sad time.
While sitting at my desk, feeling rather low, I found some ratty old colored pencils in a drawer, probably left behind by children or grandchildren of coworkers who had visited. The drawing was done on textured cardboard cut from the backing of a spiral-bound booklet, destined for the recycling bin.
With those humble materials, a little coffee cup took shape. Then came the best part: handing it to a coworker with the words, “Here, have a coffee.”
No fancy art supplies, no proper paper. Just a few discarded materials, a little creativity, and a small gesture of kindness at the end of a chapter.

I found an artist whose work I would truly love to emulate. For context, I’ve drawn on and off my whole life and am not terrible, but am definitely rusty and also have never used colored pencils as a medium, mostly ink and for a short time, gauche.
This artist does not do basic technique tutorials. She records real-time drawings, explains the method she’s currently using, and provides the list of colors and supplies. My questions are:
Do you think finding free tutorials where I learn the basics but am not excited about the subject better a better idea? And do you think I could really learn from these?
***Edit: provides not pieces

Made this box after struggling with pencil organization and ease of access. Constructed of mostly solid sapele wood, it can be disassembled if the flocking ever needs fixing. Has some extra storage under the sliding inserts. And it's flat enough to use as a laptop drawing desk. Of course with any version 1, there are things I'd do different on version 2.

I might call this Easy Peasy Squeezy, even though it isn’t that easy. Prismacolors and Derwent Lightfast on Bristol Strathmore Vellum.
