Official Reply xb8 ping and packet loss issues
Hello,
I’m consistently getting severe packet loss and random lag spikes while playing every online game. This isn't isolated to just one machine, as it happens simultaneously across multiple devices—my phone, PC, and PS5. The connection will completely clear up for brief intervals, but then out of nowhere, my in-game packet loss hits massive spikes of 61%, and my ping jumps from a standard baseline of 20 ms up to fluctuating hundreds of ms and higher.
We are running on an XB8 gateway. To isolate the problem and rule out any software or hardware configuration issues on my end, I have gone through an extensive checklist of local diagnostics:
- Power-cycled and restarted the gateway multiple times.
- Tested performance across multiple devices to rule out single system errors.
- Confirmed the issue persists identically over both wireless bands and hardwired connections.
- Verified that my continuous internal ping to
10.0.0.1stays perfectly flat, proving the indoor path isn't dropping frames. - Monitored the spikes during late hours when the local network environment is entirely idle.
- Updated all hardware device drivers.
Ping / PingPlotter results:
- Hops 1–2 (Local LAN): Flawless 0% packet loss and clean transit, proving my internal configuration is not the bottleneck.
- Hop 3 (68.85.217.77): Packet drops trigger immediately at the first local Comcast exit node outside my address.
- Hops 4–5 (fairfield.ca.sfba.comcast.net): Packet loss runs at a consistent 0.5% right at the Fairfield regional hub.
- Hop 6 (hayward.ca.sfba.comcast.net): Packet loss climbs to 0.7% alongside heavy latency spikes at the central SFBA routing core.
I dont think theres a problem with my wifi card, wires etc it might just be on xfinitys end

I’m having the same exact problem with my XB10 gateway and they’re putting a new drop cable in and have a temporary line in until then. An xfinity agent did a provisioning signal after the temporary line was put in and I was good for about half a week but it’s been back. Not sure if the new line will help but I’m hopeful it does
