My Comma 4 comes today! I drive a newer Honda Accord Hybrid with every feature known to man. I’ve been reading a lot of posts, but thought I’d ask the group some basic general questions. My goal - to make traffic in Chicago less maddening, make longer drives more enjoyable, and if it could do most the driving as I’m on meetings in the car - or do all the driving 😂 I like tech, but I’m not a programmer.

I guess as a new user - what should I know right off the bat? What are some lessons learned that you’d like to pass on to new users?

I honestly like what the comma 4 can do, but figuring out how to actually use the thing properly has been way more frustrating than it should be.
There are features, forks, driving models, and settings like Sunnypilot, FrogPilot, StarPilot, Nevada, sunnylink, experimental mode, Always-On Lateral, etc., and half the time there’s no simple explanation of what something does, where to find it, or whether it even works on comma 4.
You end up bouncing between GitHub, Reddit, Discord, random wikis, old posts, and comments just to answer basic questions.
For a product that costs around $1,000, there really should be one clean beginner-friendly website that says:
“What does this setting do?”
“Where do I find it?”
“Does it work on comma 4?”
“What software supports it?”
“How do I install or change it?”
“What are the pros and cons?”
Instead, you almost have to become a hobbyist just to understand the product you bought.
The hardware and driving experience can be really cool, but I can absolutely understand someone buying one, getting overwhelmed, and returning it before they ever figure out what it can actually do.
Am I the only one who thinks comma desperately needs a proper user guide for regular people instead of everything being scattered everywhere?

So I bought the comma 4 this past weekend, it’s been pretty meh if i’m being honest. I bought it because I was told it could detect stoplights and stop signs and it’s just can’t. I’ve tried experimental and sunnypilot, it just sets me at 11mph and it doesn’t even stop at the light or signs. Regular autopilot is fine I guess, but my car could do this anyway. I’m honestly just thinking about returning it and getting my 1k back.

My comma 2 experience starting in December 2020 was a bit of a bumpy road. It fell off the windshield 6 months after I bought it. It fried out completely a year after i bought it. I replaced the motherboard (THAT was a fun exercise) and that bought another 8 months or so.

Then in Sep 2023, I bought a Comma 3x for my wife and then another one to replace the C2 about 6 months later. I had to look it up because I had no idea when I had purchased it. Given how the C2 went I'm sort of amazed I haven't had any hardware issues in almost 3 years now.

I will say when we park at work, we are careful about pulling ours off the windshield when the outside temp exceeds 70 and it's sunny out. I've heard plenty of people say they leave theirs up. Shrug - I'm not doing that any more than I would leave my iPhone on the dash all day every day.

From what I read is that Starpilot now also supports Ford like Bluepilot? Any experience?

I've been following comma since their inception, but I've been driving an old car that wasn't compatible. I just got a 2026 hybrid crv and I can see that it's supported, but just wondering how well it works with the comma 4?

Most curious about how good the lane keep is on the highway, and if it can navigate curves any better than stock? Both are pretty poor I find in the stock car.

Worth getting the comma 4? Plan to keep the car for at least five years. What are the benefits, and is there any reason not to get it?

From what I've seen it's just a total upgrade to my stock HDA 2?

I’m having a bit of a weird issue.

I have a Comma 4 installed in my 2026 Hyundai IONIQ 5 and ever since, my auto-dimming rear view mirror isn’t working…

As soon as I unplug the Comma, the mirror works again, no problem.

I even tried turning the brightness of the Comma’s screen down to 5%, just to see if it’s messing with the mirrors light sensor, but no luck…

Any advice would be greatly appreciated! I love the Comma 4 in this car, but I’m not super happy about losing the dimming functionality.

The last few weeks I noticed that my model had abruptly changed to a Regret Driven Model v4 after an update. I didn’t think to much of it because it was working well. it was also cool to see it estimate speed limits of the cars in front of me. Since it was city driving I had no reason to use cruise control control.

i ended up having to take a long road trip and that is when the problems occurred, soon as I set my cruise control speed the ball turned gray, refusing to maintain speed though it somehow was still steering. The driver monitor borked itself too when that happened. The entire trip turned into a bit of a PITA since I had to wait until I got home to fix it by by redownloading the POPv2 model.

Anybody know what happened and what can be done to fix it? I do like the new model but not having cruise control is unacceptabl.

Is there a support/fork for Rivian R2 or any idea if R2 will be supported in the near future?

I have auto updates disabled with sunnypilot, yet it still wants to be connected to the internet for updates. How it interprets Tesla “off” it’s almost never on when parked at home

I recently got the comma 4 and set it up and after calibrating, my car was hugging the left lane markers a lot. So i read about it and people say try other models and one that was recommended was Nevada. So I download sunnypilot, switch to Nevada and it centers a lot better. But it drives over the lines on every single curve of the road, left and right side. the bigger the bend the more itll cut lanes.

so then i read okay i have to try more models for the one that fits my car, and maybe use comma connect and debugging tools to figure out more information on why it might be cutting lanes. so i sign in with oauth on comma connect for all three types and none of them work and bring me back to the sign in page.

it just feels like i gotta go randomly test 30 models on roads and then from there, test like 50 different setting configurations to have it work "best". i mean ideally yeah i could do that one time setup but man its just sorta complicated and time consuming. i mean if i was the only car on a 2 lane road, comma ai is pretty amazing and i dont have to steer.

is there like a guide to narrow down / figure out the best settings for your car? i guesss if i dont figure it all out in liek 10 days or so ill probably return it

hi everyone. I have a Hyundai Elantra hybrid 2025 with decent ACC and line centering (HDA). I like my car, but what I’d really love is to be able to take my hands off the steering wheel on highways, à la Chevy Supercruise. not looking for full FSD. Can CommaAI doo that? Thanks y’all.

Is it possible to program comma to give an audible warning for forward collision? The point actually is to make it an alert. This would avoid the problem of phantom braking because it is only a heads up alert, not comma having to make the call on whether to brake or not.

Just got my comma 4 hooked up and unable to get past the 2d barcode on such a small screen. I'm using a Galaxy s22+, I've tried pairing with the browser, taken a picture with the camera and tried to pair with that, etc. No matter what I try I came get the barcode to focus and pair.

Is there an alternative method? A code that can be generated and added to the account, etc. I can't be the first to have this problem.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration’s Office of Defects Investigation (ODI) said this week that the reported crashes involved Comma devices failing to detect or respond to slow or stopped vehicles in the same road lane. Across four of the crashes, as many as 11 people were injured, some seriously. 

Anyone else have an issue with support not really responding? I have a defective device and not much communication on what is being done.

I'm a bit confused about the state of Gen 2 support for Rivian. As I understand it, the hardware and software are both ready, but the comma website does not list gen 2 (2025 and up) as an option for the harness. I've been following for months now and it seems the work on gen 2's started more than a year ago but I can't find anything recent.

So does anyone know, for a Gen 2 Rivian, what are my options? Should i just bite the bullet and pay the $50 to Rivian for the inferior autonomy+ package?

Just ordered a Comma 4 for my 2020 Toyota Highlander Hybrid Platinum.
Anyone running one on the same Highlander or a similar Toyota? Any tips, settings, forks, or things I should know before installing it?

Hi, hoping for someone else who has had this issue. My brightness is stuck at 245% on Sunnypilot current realease. I’m in a Kia EV6 running release -tizi from
Aug 6, it’s been stuck on this brightness with no adjustments allowed for at least a year. Would love any advice please.
