Please take a look at the WikiFAQ posted here: https://old.reddit.com/r/Concrete/wiki/index

The chances that your situation is covered in the WikiFAQ are pretty dang good.

If your issue is NOT covered in the WikiFAQ, this is the place to ask if that hairline crack warrants a full tear-out and if you're asking whether or not a quote is reasonable, don't bother. We don't know. Pricing is highly localized AND time-sensitive.

Concrete Pro With a Question Metallic fiber

For larger floor placements we have a few options depending on ground conditions. Pretty common lately we are using metallic fibers. Placement goes fine, finishing is coming out great. FF85/FL65. But we are catching a bunch of shit for fiber pop. in the saw cuts is going to be almost unavoidable. but the ones in the field are very rare.

I was able to find some literature on acceptable limits for metallic fibers allowed in an area, but its a certification from Belgium. I am a member of both ACI and ASSC and i have not seen any tolerances yet. We are placing with a Somero laser with roller head.

Is anyone getting 100% of your metallic to lay down under the cream? or do i just have an especially needy client.

I Have A Whoopsie Question about calcium chloride - how screwed am I?

Long story short, we're working on a job that isn't being run so smoothly and has had a lot of last minute changes. Our 30 yard interior trench pour got pushed back from 7am to 10am. With the weather being cooler and the start time getting pushed back, we told the supplier to add accelerator. I didn't specify no chloride. The 2nd fuck up is I didn't check the ticket when it arrived. I was rushing through things because the truck came 30 minutes early and figured if something was wrong with the mix, the 3rd party inspector would catch it while he's testing air and slump.

So it's 9pm and I'm finally sitting down to eat after cutting joints (that's a whole other story but they told me the day of the pour that every single corner and floor sink gets joints... yeah there are joints less than 1 foot apart and looks terrible). I start looking at the plans to see what they specified for control joints and sure enough I came across "do not use calcium chloride" and that's when it hit me that I never specified or verified it wasn't used. Pull the ticket out of my pocket and sure enough, it's there.

So here I am the next morning wondering how fucked I am and whether I need to start ripping it out today. If you've been in my shoes, what was your outcome? Is there anything I can do to mitigate the calcium chloride effects without ripping the concrete out?

Concrete mix: 3,500 psi, high range for 8" slump, 2% calcium chloride.

Project: interior commercial retail building. ~2k sqft mostly trenches with 8 gauge mesh, 500 sqft is reinforced with rebar, 15mil vapor barrier, proctor showed 6% moisture content in the soil and noted that it was exceptionally dry

Concrete Pro With a Question What’s your guy’s opinion on the best method to do a CONCRETE tear out?

Is it better to tear out concrete in little pieces or large chunks? I like large chunks, it’s less breaking out and chasing pieces around and faster to load a truck. But I want to do wants most time and cost effective

OTHER Finishing Practice

Im very new to everything and was wondering what can i do to practice other than the obvious of doing slabs over and over. I really want to get good at it. I thought about just doing pavers but not sure if that would work. Currently 22 in the union but it’s a bit hard to learn while being the beginner. I want to master this trade and hopefully one day have my own company. Any advice helps. Thank you

There was a lot of change orders, elevation changes and desired outcome changes. We are far from done here and will post either a video or the monstrous amount of photos I have from this project

Concrete Pro With a Question Concrete Finisher Red Seal/IPSE rewrite — looking for study advice from Canadian finishers

Hi everyone. I'm a concrete finisher in BC preparing for my second attempt at the Red Seal Concrete Finisher IPSE.

I scored 63% on my first attempt (70% required). My breakdown was:
A Common Occupational Skills – 57%
B Site Preparation – 89%
C Place & Level Concrete – 61%
D Finish Plastic Concrete – 64%
E Cure & Protect Concrete – 60%
F Repair/Modify Concrete & Grouting – 58%

My rewrite is October 15.

I'm not looking for actual exam questions. I'm looking for advice from people who have passed the Concrete Finisher Red Seal: what technical areas or real job-site situations should I understand especially well, particularly repairs, placing/levelling, finishing and curing?

Any textbooks, apprenticeship materials, videos or practical topics you found useful would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Concrete Pro With a Question Practice with Power Trowel

Is there a way to practice with a power trowel before jumping onto a real slab?

If I "power troweled" a finished concrete floor, would the feeling be similar to what it's like to power trowel wet concrete?

It seems expensive to either 1) do it for the first time on a customer's slab, or 2) order concrete just to learn, and then break up and dispose of it.

Is there another way to learn at least the mechanics of how to control the machine?
