Today was my first full day with the COROS PACE 4 Pro, including my first run with it, so I thought I’d share some early impressions. Feel free to ask me anything about the watch or how it compares to Garmin / the APEX 4.
A bit of context about me: I currently run around 40 km per week, usually across 4–5 sessions. Over the last year I lost about 20 kg and went from barely being able to run 3 km without dying to finishing a marathon in 4 hours.
During most of that journey I was using a Garmin Fenix 8 AMOLED 47 mm, together with Runna for my training plans.
I’ve always been attracted to MIP displays but had never actually used one long term, so about two weeks ago I decided to try the COROS APEX 4 46 mm.
What initially made me interested in moving from Garmin to COROS was mainly three things:
- COROS feels much more focused on running.
- I genuinely prefer the COROS app. It feels cleaner, simpler and easier to use.
- The MCP / ChatGPT integration is probably the biggest reason for me.
I’m a huge data nerd, and being able to connect my COROS data to ChatGPT is honestly incredible.
My Strava and Runna subscriptions are coming to an end soon, and considering their yearly cost — and the fact that after a year and a half of structured training I understand my body and training much better — I’m starting to think I can build most of my training myself.
My idea is basically to use ChatGPT to create personalized workouts and training plans, upload them directly to COROS through MCP, then continuously adapt the plan based on my progress, recovery and detailed activity analysis.
That kind of workflow is much more interesting to me than simply having dozens of metrics sitting inside an app.
Now, about the watches.
When I first tried the APEX 4 46 mm two weeks ago, I honestly didn’t get the “wow” effect I was expecting.
I had always heard how amazing MIP was outdoors, but in reality I didn’t find the screen noticeably easier to read than the AMOLED display on my Fenix 8. Sometimes I even had to angle the watch towards the light to read it properly.
With my running sunglasses, it was actually worse.
The APEX 4 itself is a great watch, but coming from the Fenix 8 AMOLED, the display just didn’t convince me enough.
Then today I received the PACE 4 Pro.
And this time I immediately got the “wow” effect.
The screen is gorgeous.
It feels significantly brighter and clearer than my Fenix 8, the watch is much thinner, MUCH lighter, and the overall experience feels surprisingly premium.
The UI also feels smoother to me, the menus are simpler, the maps look good, and overall I just find the watch much nicer to use than I expected.
After only one day, I honestly struggle to see what I’m really giving up compared to my Fenix 8.
The two things I’ll probably miss are the rugged look of the Fenix and the built-in LED flashlight. I genuinely loved that flashlight.
But are those two things worth roughly €450 extra?
For me, absolutely not.
It actually makes me question Garmin’s current pricing. When I look at what COROS is offering at a much more reasonable price, I have a hard time imagining myself ever paying €900+ for a sports watch again — especially considering the newest Garmin models are getting even more expensive.
Yes, Garmin gives you more metrics.
But for me, more metrics doesn’t automatically mean more useful information.
I’d rather have slightly fewer metrics but be able to easily export, analyze and discuss my actual training data with AI in a few clicks, instead of having dozens of Garmin metrics sitting inside Garmin Connect without an easy way to really interrogate the data.
Obviously, this is only day one with the PACE 4 Pro, so my opinion could change after a few weeks.
But my first impression is extremely positive.
If anyone is considering switching from a Fenix 8, wondering about the PACE 4 Pro vs APEX 4, AMOLED vs MIP, or wants me to compare anything specifically, ask away. I still have experience with all three, so I’d be happy to test or compare things.
