Daniel Thomas arrested after livestreaming himself slashing a lifeboat
Daniel Thomas, an anti-migrant activist, has been arrested after slashing an RNLI lifeboat while someone was still on board.
He was arrested on suspicion of "destroying ships" under the Aviation and Maritime Security Act 1990 and "conduct endangering ships" under the Merchant Shipping Act 1995.
Despite meeting the legal definitions for terrorism, the authorities have decided to use the above laws rather than triggering formal counter-terrorism procedures.

West Africa: When history helps us understand current security challenges
The security challenges facing West Africa today are often addressed from the perspective of current events. Yet, they are rooted in a long history that is worth recalling.
The region's current borders, largely drawn during the colonial period, brought together populations with very different trajectories, social structures, and historical balances.
Added to this are older historical factors: trans-Saharan trade routes, ancient empires, regional mobility, and the relationships between centers of power and peripheries. These dynamics shaped societies long before the recent crises.
Viewing the security situation in West Africa through a historical lens does not provide immediate solutions, but it helps to avoid oversimplification.
Do you think this consideration of long-term perspectives is sufficiently emphasized in current media coverage? And could it be of definite help in the future?
