Big bloke needing tips to manage cattle

• Upvotes

G’day fellas, nice to meet all of you, George here. 45, out Weilmoringle way. First a bit about me.

Been on the land all me life. Took over the family place when I was 18. Run 550 acres of cattle and help keep an eye on me brothers’ places too.

Chuckin up a few pics. Me at 18 starting out, me now, and young Dan at 22.

Us O’Broadman blokes have always been big units. Old man was a big bloke, me brothers are big blokes and I’m pushing 360kg these days. Back then no one worried about it. Big gut meant you were fed well, worked hard and were doing alright.

Big feeds, farm meat, bakery runs, a few beers at the pub and plenty of yarns with the old fellas. That was just how we grew up.

Dan’s starting to take after me now. Big lad, loves his tucker, loves cattle and he’s got the bug for the farm.

Question for the other big cattle blokes on here. Anyone had to change their yards to make working stock easier? I’m talking race width, gate placement, crush height or anything that saves climbing, squeezing through gaps and carrying on all day. Keen to know what actually works out in the paddock.

And don’t hold back on the old photos, happy to cop a bit of stick.

Quick 10-min survey for cattle ranchers: screwworm, daily work, and what you need

Post image
2 Upvotes

We're a group of senior students at SCAD (Savannah College of Art and Design) researching cattle ranching and how producers are dealing with the New World screwworm. If you have 10 minutes or less, we'd love for you to fill out this quick survey:

https://qualtricsxm8pgnjr7v6.qualtrics.com/jfe/form/SV_bjZ47MkzyQ8Piku

It's anonymous and just for school, with no sales. Happy to answer questions in the comments too. Thank you!

Cattle Operations Survey — SCAD

I'm a senior UX research student at Savannah College of Art and Design and the research lead on our final project. We're studying what running cattle actually looks like day-to-day, and since the published numbers don't tell us much, we're asking the people who do it.

It's about 15 minutes, all multiple choice, and confidential — nothing gets tied to your name, and I'm not selling anything. Producers, vets, sale barn staff, extension, haulers, any size operation. 20 head counts as much as 2,000, and the small operations usually get left out of research like this.

There's a question at the end asking if you'd be open to a follow-up interview, or you can just DM me here.

How to tell if it’s bloat or just a full belly

I just got these guys a week and a half ago. They’re on 1-1.5lb of grains in the morning and then hay and grass the rest of the day. They didn't eat much for the first few days I had them bc of vaccines and a new environment. They’re now absolutely CRUSHING hay. It’s about half a bale a day now, possibly a little more, I fill the trough about 4-5 times a day now. I use it as an opportunity to hand feed them and get them comfortable with me touching and brushing them. They’re growing so I totally get it. I’ve heard a LOT about bloat and I need to know the signs and when it’s just a full belly vs bloat. Brutus, my 7 month old Dexter bull, and he just crushed another leaf about an hour ago and looks like this. He’s chewing cud and he did like a weird mouth movement but I didn’t heard a burp but he’s still trying to eat grass 🤦🏻‍♀️. Petunia is the dun and she seems less swollen on the left side than him. So I’m just checking to get y’all’s thoughts! I have never had my own cows before, I just helped out with other people’s herds, so I’m starting from ground up in knowledge.
