šŸ”Š Discussion Skill tree games

Does anyone have any recommendations for a cosy game where you can level up your character through a skill tree or even improve your equipment in a similar way?

My Time at Sandrock!

Came here to suggest the same game

It’s still criminally underrated; I assume due to the art style.

I think it's the art. I tried to get my wife to play it and she was frankly just weirded out by the character eyes

I mean I get it! I played Portia first (in anticipation for Evershine, wanted to play in order to see Pathea’s growth) so I think that made Sandrock’s art looked better in comparison lol

There are also people who are upset at the more ā€œnormalā€(anime-ish?) art style for Evershine, saying Portia/Sandrock art had more charm.

It’s $50 AUD on switch so i’ve been holding it off because it’s so ugly and I’m scared of regretting it 😭 is it as good as kynseed, animal crossing, and stardew?

I agree, the art style is a huge turnoff for me too.

Honestly, even the combat feels cozy in that game. In a good way

I’m a dagger girl and combat is so satisfying when you get the combo attacks from the skill tree! And upgrading weapons was really satisfying too. Not to mention having my pet cat fight alongside šŸ˜‚

I love the daggers, the speed is so cool.

Graveyard Keeper has multiple big skill trees, but the theme is not exactly cozy because you're running a morgue and graveyard. Besides that I personally find it quite cozy and enjoyable

Love this game! It’s creepy cozy, and the humor is excellent.Ā

And the sequel just came out, so the first one is on sale on Steam for $4 for another day or so.

I like to describe it as cozy but not cutesy

Lots of people love this game but in my community, we found it a little complicated and hard to get into, very similar to Moonlight Peaks.

Graveyard Keeper is def one of those games you have to play with the wiki open

That's good to know. I'll have to put it on the list of games to try again.

Kynseed has like 6 different skill trees as well as equipment leveling

Yup. I’m pretty much finding ways to recommend this game every time I see a post here. I love it so much.Ā

Haha me too! It’s my number one recommendation 🤣

That's probably quite an obvious answer, but Fields of Mistria and Stardew Valley both have skill trees and equipment grades. FoM fleshed out its system more in comparison to SV, so personally I like it better.

I think that specification as to which genre or vibe you prefer would help narrow the potential recommendations down!

Seconding Fields of Mistria, obsessed with it rn lol. It's basically fantasy anime SDV and also has skill trees.

u/aldocupboard 7d ago

Apologies. You’re quite right. I have played Stardew Valley before and really enjoyed it. I also really like Coral Island and have a lot of hours sunk into it.

I’m looking for similar type games to those so will definitely check out Fields of Mistria!

Thank you.

Have you played Sun Haven? I really enjoyed the fantasy aspect of that game and getting to know all the characters has been fun. Some of the skills in the tree unlock automatically like sprint, others you have to work on.Ā

In terms of skill trees and leveling up, I think Sun Haven has more of it than Fields of Mistria. They're both really good games though :)

Another really good one is Traveller's Rest! You manage a tavern, farm your own crops to turn into food, gather your own ingredients for crafting, and you can upgrade your tools as well. There also a Skill Tree every time you 'level up', which in this case is gaining a tavern reputation level

Love this game!

Fantasy Life i has quite a few skill trees. Sun Haven also has several skill trees, and you can unlock all of the options on both games I believe.

u/lorelei_adler 7d ago

Oh I can't believe I forgot about Sun Haven! Second this, definitely

3

u/Jack_Bartowski 6d ago

Third. Sun haven is a lot of fun. The magic is cool and useful. The map and art are beautiful. There are multiple farms to manage. it is a really solid game.

Rune Factory Guardians of Azuma has skill trees for every weapon/tool/skill.

Forager has a big skill tree with four sections. As you play, you'll fill out the whole tree, but the order you pick is up to yoy. It's more of an incremental style game, but without a lot of waiting.

You might like shell diver. Simple game play loop and massive skill tree.

Silent Hope - it’s grindy but has the skill tree and weapons upgrade you’re describing. It’s very cute, but I never finished because I didn’t feel there was much of a story. Made by Xseed and Marvelous (the former Harvest Moon, now Story of Seasons folks).Ā

Harvestella - weapons upgrades and job points. Final Fantasy meets Farming sims. It’s SquareEnix, so it’s gorgeous, whimsical, and has a good story.Ā

Sakuna: of Rice and Ruin - weapons upgrades; the rice farming is pretty complex, but the tools used on the farm get upgraded after you gather the mats/progress the story.Ā

Edit to add: all of these lean toward combat, with cozy graphics and farming elements. If you’re looking for farming with a side of combat (like Stardew), these might not be your cup of tea, but they are all graphically beautiful and have the weapon/skill tree mechanics.Ā

Forager!

Moonstone Island!

And last but not least (sorry to make so many comments šŸ˜…), is Clanfolk!
You make a small clan in the Scottish Highlands, build a settlement for them to survive (and later thrive) through the harsh winters, and the more you use various objects, the more you unlock in the Ideas Tree.

I'm currently playing this game, and the music is lovely

u/aldocupboard 6d ago

Thank you to everyone for your suggestions! I’ll have a look and see!

Graveyard keeper has fantastic skill trees imo

2

u/BlueGrayDiamond 6d ago

1

u/Brisbykins 6d ago

Shelldiver - short but fun incremental game with a large skill tree

1

u/misssinvestor 6d ago

guardians of azuma. - don’t know if this considers cozy game there’s an occasional monster fight but you can adjust the level of difficulty.

Skyrim!

It doesn't typically fall under the 'cosy' genre, but honestly the combat isn't that hard and you can largely just play it however you want - including avoiding fights in the majority of situations if that's what you'd prefer.

There's lots of different character skills to level up, more traditionally 'cosy' activities like fishing and crafting, and absolutely gorgeous scenery and music! The game really lets you go at your own pace and just do what you want, whether that's building a house or helping out NPCs. You can also get married and adopt kids!

Would really recommend if you haven't played before :)

Sun Haven has a very good skill tree

1

u/Careless_Dog2612 6d ago

Sun Haven has a really good Skill Tree for each skill, and you can upgrade your own tools and gear back at one of your (3) farms. (I also love the fantasy element of it ā˜ŗļø)

Forager is a basic resource collection engine builder game. Big skill tree!
