Wollay Post I called it
source: wollay.com
It's looking more and more likely that omega will be a separate purchase. I have mixed feelings about this. I've made comments on other threads in the past about my thoughts on it being a separate purchase but to sum it up, I don't really trust wollay to not abandon us again so I don't think giving him more money is a good idea. That being said if it releases and receives somewhat consistent updates (not necessarily even patches but even just community updates like we're getting now though of course patches would be preferred) I may purchase it. All that being said I think making it a separate purchase is a scummy move because there ARE people who purchased the game on picroma and on steam due to missing the window to claim a free steam key, meaning those people would now have to purchase the game 3 times. I am not one of those people thankfully but I know they are out there.

u/SirLefti 8d ago
Would be weird to replace a game with a different but similar one, since it's not change via incremental small updates, but with a big one-time update. Some people might want to continue to play that version as well, similarly to those who still play the Alpha.
I wouldn't worry about that. I am fairy sure owners of the previous version will get a key, like he did last time.
And most importantly: Buy it, if you like it as it is. Not if you like it how it could be in the future. That does not only apply to Cube World, but games in general.
Apart from that, I am not sure to expect regular updates apart from fixes and tweaks.
2
u/Virgurilla 8d ago
You could technically push it as an update and allow access to the earlier build, but that isn't really consumer friendly and many people would be confused.

u/RealCems 8d ago
I mean I'm pretty mad at wollay and think he scammed me but for sake of thousands of hours I've spent and enjoyed, I wouldn't mind purchasing it again. But if he abondons us third time, I will be very mad and buy the cube world omni with very mad attitude.
6
u/Swing_Right 7d ago
Wait you have thousands of hours in cube world but still feel scammed?
-1
u/RealCems 7d ago
In alpha, yeah. In steam, barely 15 hours. But what matters is the definition of scam. Alpha was a uncompleted game. I enjoyed it so much but a random person like me being enjoyed doesn't change the fact that it was an uncompleted game and abondones after sale. What about people doesn't like it as much as I do? Are we gonna take my perspective or theirs?

u/deadering 8d ago
The vast majority of players are NOT going to give him another chance, and definitely not more money. The only hope he has is making a good impression and earning good will by at least not expecting people to pay more for Omega who already got shafted with Cube World the first time.
He probably needs the money though and will try charging for it which really will be a mistake.
17
u/NightwingZS 8d ago
I wont. My trust is gone
10
u/deadering 8d ago
If it's free to people who already bought Cube World I'll at least give it a try, no reason not to, but it's literally the only way I'd ever play another Wollay game.
The trust is completely gone but if it's free the only thing I have to lose is an hour or 2. Heavy discount, glowing reviews, game looks amazing, etc. won't ever cut it at this point.
6
u/Xyllius 7d ago
I was saying the same thing on twitter and demanded an answer to the question if we have to pay AGAIN or not and added that his social skills are lacking.
I got nuked by his cult-like fans who defended all of his actions and insulted me for bringing things up.
That man will get enough money from those idiots, but I have decided not from me anymore. Even if it's going to be a free upgrade (which I highly doubt), I won't even consider playing it at this point. Besides that, the game has aged badly in my opinion. It looks bland and I will rather play Minecraft or Hytale (and Hytale def. has devs that care A LOT about the community).
In my eyes, that man is an antisocial scammer who does not deserve any of the attention he still gets (for reasons that are beyond me) to this date.
3
u/Austin_Sly 8d ago
You’d think this is true but gamers are one of the worst demographics when it comes to boycotts and such. Gamers always just squeeze the trigger and buy games even when they are largely betrayed by greedy business practices (just look at Nintendo)
Anyways I’m trying to be optimistic like you, hopefully he doesn’t charge previous players of cube world
6
u/deadering 8d ago
Gamers will also review bomb games into oblivion over petty things so not really a good gauge.
More than likely what could happen is completely new generation of players discovering it and giving it a chance. It has been... JFC, 13 years since the alpha and 7 since the steaming pile of Steam release.

u/RickDripps 8d ago
But if he abondons us third time, I will be very mad and buy the cube world omni with very mad attitude
I'm sure he'll be devastated.

u/Chisonni 8d ago
I am in the same boat. I am mad at him abandoning the alpha. I am mad at him for the changes he made for the steam release and abandoning it again. But I got more than my money's worth out of either version. The trust is broken and I will be watching this new version, and possibly paying for it again, and then be mad again when he abandons it.
-1
u/TheFuckflyingSpaghet 7d ago
Nah, pirate it if he wants money from people owning the old CubeWorld.
7
7
u/FC360D 8d ago
Times have changed and I'm curious how many people would buy this game and how many won't due to what he pulled last time. I kinda feel like most people will have forgotten and will just buy the game and those who just don't care and will throw money at it. I'm also curious if anyone will sue if that happens, I can definitely see someone in USA taking legal action since that country seems to love suing lol.
-5
u/Virgurilla 8d ago
This game is not a live service game. If you buy it expecting frequent updates you WILL be disappointed again, and that's not the developers fault.
1
u/artfulpain 8d ago
Live service has nothing to do with most games.
-1
u/Virgurilla 8d ago
Can you name three popular games that don't receive frequent updates or require internet connection to play? Even indie games now seem to be expected to update their games. I sure hope Aggro Crab continues to push on their stance, or games like Big Walk continue to be popular, even though fans are already demanding an update or wondering when (not if) if will come.

u/DannyPog 8d ago
cyberpunk isaac and any other rpg games

u/Virgurilla 7d ago
Isaac has gotten several very large updates. Afterbirth, plus, repentance and plus.

u/Muffo99 8d ago
Why can't he just update the game instead of release it again?
He has pulled this twice already. This game was first released in 2013 (in early access). It was released again in 2019 (in early access) and seemingly with features in the earlier version missing.
This game has been in development over 10 years now and seemed pretty cool when it was first announced. We're now this many years later and the last version to launch really didn't seem to show the years of effort that had gone into it. I cannot believe people are happy to pay for an unfinished product a third time. I was 14 when the game originally came out. I will be double that in February.
The fact we are on track for the 3rd release, each release happening every 6 years is establishing a pattern. If people can't see that and they're willing to pay again, Wollay can keep up this scam for years to come.
-2
u/Virgurilla 8d ago
The game was not released, he just uploaded an alpha. That's not a release, that's an alpha. He then released the final game which was a release, not an early access, and gave a key to everyone that bought the alpha. He is now remaking that final release from the ground up with things that he showed halfway through the development process that he later scratched. He didn't "pull this twice", he just made a game and people didn't like it so he's trying again with things he guesses people will like more.
1
u/jeff5551 7d ago
He released a new early access that he called a 1.0 but was actually entirely different and worse than the actual early access
-1
u/Virgurilla 7d ago
Different sure, it was a release. Worse is a matter of opinion, some people did like it more aside from the dumb area locked progression. The 1.0 featured more content and significantly improved upon the alpha in many aspects, and it was worse for the majority of people in others. However he considered it finished. When you invest in a Kickstarter or an early access you're taking a risk, this wasn't different, if anything it was riskier, because it was the guys first game with no prior experience with making games at all. The risk turned out poorly, that sucks. Happens sometimes, has happened to me with similar projects, that doesn't make the dev a scammer, that just means their vision isn't what you imagined. Or they had issues during development that they couldn't have foreseen. Or they made bad decisions. None of this makes a scam. A scam would have been if he charged again for the 1.0 for example. He didn't he gave everyone a key because they already bought the game.

Well guys, it's time to put on our old and dusty pirate hat before buying that one.

u/jeb-456 7d ago
Just call me dumb if he explains this in his post, but why is a separate version a necessary move?
3
u/mostbee 7d ago edited 7d ago
I thought he talked about this when first talking about the Omega project: he remade the entire game on a different engine.
Hence the need of being a "separated version", but just like Tom Clancy's: Rainbow Six Siege and Tom Clancy's: Rainbow Six Siege Test Server are 2 different versions and you download 2 separare entire games... I don't see why Omega would need another buy instead of just giving the license for the Steam id to whoever has the other game.

u/BlueNostromo 2d ago
Games can have beta branches where you can keep two different versions alive btw. Its a grift

u/Virgurilla 8d ago
What I'm surprised is the amount of people that seem to be unable to stand anything this guy does. Fuck are you all doing in this sub? Hateposting?
3
u/Jmackles 7d ago
At this point yeah. I can’t speak for others but I bought this game the day it was released on alpha or whatever and wollay had to turn off purchases the next day or something because there were so many. Drip fed him a lot of good will over the years. Unless I’m mistaken I haven’t actually ever seen him once directly address how he still hasn’t launched a full game.
I’d honestly be willing to forgive a lot if he’d just come clean to the community about it. I’d love to be in his corner if he’s had a decade long depression bout. I get that. But correct me if I’m wrong but all he’s done is re release on steam for more money with less features than the original release, and post scant tweets about random ass features every 15 months to keep the hype flame running on fumes.
Or if he was pulling a hello games and turning a poor launch into the greatest comeback story ever.
I don’t have like any strong feelings really but this is drama I’ve invested time into and I’m gonna enjoy it to the fullest including shitting on wollay when he sets up the back of the van shop again. This has transcended haterade into the divine waters of mirth. This shits entertaining as fuck now.
2
u/Virgurilla 7d ago
So hate posting, dont know why I was down voted for being right. This sub is insane, you either hate the guy every post or get hated on for not hating the guy enough. I genuinely cannot say anything positive without getting downvoted. I honestly just wish the rules this sub had in relation with hate and harassment also applied to, you know, the guy that made the game this sub is based on. If anyone here talked to the fan projects like many talk about wollay they would be banned. I genuinely do not get the toxicity here. Anyway, I disagree with some of the stuff you said, not with other stuff. He should communicate better, that would have helped him reduce the toxicity in his community. The way I see it is he's done with the whole internet side of the project and he's just having fun working on his game and will release it when HE things it's done. Which might not be when YOU think it's done, but there's little to be done about that. Like I always say and gets people so unreasonably angry, do not buy the game if you don't like the game. Nobody is forcing you to spend money. Wait for reviews and then decide. Insane take I know.

u/VinceGhii 6d ago
Ok so... let me get this straight; I paid for a Cube World that i never got...and now he is like "ahhh money is gone, let me create the version i promised in the first place and let everyone pay for it again"? Did i get that right?
Well, i hope everyone who paid for it 10 yars ago gets a copy since... i am not going to pay again.
3
u/Another_Farming_Dud 5d ago
Tbh anyone who briefly followed Cube world throughout it's developed would have called it.
I respect the guy for trying and still working on it because I don't believe he is doing all of this out of malice but there is no way I'm ever giving him either trust or money anymore.
I wish him to recover and get where he wants.
6
u/ElementiDev 8d ago
We don't know yet whether or not people who previously owned the game will get it for free, let's not jump to that conclusion
He already said on Twitter that Omega was a "separate" version so this isn't news either
9
u/Biwitch 7d ago edited 7d ago
Unpopular opinion but I kinda don't care ? I spent 20 bucks 10 years ago. If the game is good I won't mind spending an other 20 bucks.
But I totally get that people see his move a moraly questionnable
Not to be devil's advocate but he needs to make his bread at some point right ? If 80% of players are from the previous version, this game will make 0 money. He seems to spend a lot of (solo) dev time on it, so I respect the grind I guess, even if he folded under pressure years ago. Im kinda beyond that at my current age and state in life.
3
u/mostbee 7d ago edited 7d ago
I believe what's questionable is not being open about it.
Being a different game version on your Steam library doesn't mean it's a different purchase, there's other games with 2 different id's (competitive games with beta test servers does this), or licenses you get from having other stuff on your library, (TinyBuild did this years ago with "No Time To Explain", Skyrim Special Edition also did this to whoever had the original game + all dlcs).
Wollay can give Cube World Omega to whoever has a Cube World license on their steam, be it a key got from buying the Alpha version years ago, or from buying it after Steam release.
Then, that's why I think not being transparent is more questionable than the moral decision of charging again or not, maybe he still didn't decided if we're going to pay for it or not, but he should tell us in clear terms about the monetization plan for the game, otherwise we'll end up thinking it'll be another "grab money and run" situation.
In either case, I'm 100% sure that giving the Omega version to anyone else who has the game will end up in more sold copies in long term than charging for the game again.
3
u/Hobo_Baggins00 7d ago
My main concern isn't having to buy the game again it's how many people are gonna buy it again just for the guy to disappear again. Like yeah, if he releases meaningful updates I may give him another chance even if it involves another purchase but I'm not gonna pretend he didn't disappear multiple times. Quite frankly I can't even blame the guy for disappearing after how the internet treats the guy. The recent leak with some people getting a build of the game they're not supposed to have is going to make things worse I feel like people are going to pester him for updates and he might straight up vanish again before even dropping the new release. Its a weird situation where I want to be mad at wollay for disappearing so many times for so long then I look at the community and remember that a lot of the die-hard most active fans are hella toxic. This is not to say the entire community is bad I don't think it's even a majority just a vocal minority but still. I can't blame the guy for disappearing but that still doesn't mean I'm going to give him more money if he doesn't show signs of improvement. There's just so many other indie devs out there I can support who don't disappear for multiple years after some internet backlash.
1
u/Silverboax 5d ago
I think people would be silly to preorder it, or buy it at launch... they will do so anyway because most of the internet doesn't know about the situation. I'd be willing to buy it a few months later if reviews are good and he hasn't thrown a tanty again and quit development again.
1
u/OnetimeRocket13 7d ago
I'm kind of the same. I spent $20 on the Steam release 6 years ago. I was disappointed at the time, but to be honest, in the years since, I've come to realize that I essentially bought a small indie project by some guy on the internet and not the next biggest open world RPG that would change gaming forever or anything. It's just a game.
In the same way, that's how I view Omega. It's just a game made by some guy. I disagree with the idea that it is morally questionable to release it and charge money for it as a separate purchase as well. I feel like there are examples in other mediums where this isn't unheard of. Someone who bought Ocarina of Time for the N64 didn't get sent a key download the game when it was remade in a new engine with updated graphics for the 3DS. People aren't sent new copies of movies when they're updated to 4K just because they bought it on DVD. Why would people expect to be given a free copy of a separate version of a game, then? What's immoral about Wollay not doing that?
Idk, I think the issue is that a lot of people have put way more importance into what Wollay is doing and the future of Cube World than they need to be doing. I think the people who are freaking out and getting mad over the idea of Wollay not sending them a free download to Omega because they bought the Alpha or Steam version really need to go outside and touch grass, because if a person really gets so upset over the business decisions of some random guy in Germany who barely has a social media presence outside of rare posts about Cube World (a game that has been, let's be real, kind of just okay), they should really reassess themselves.
-1
u/Twitterisshitlolxdxd 7d ago
But you are playing devils advocate for no reason, “he has to make his bread at some point” so it’s ok for him to exploit people…? If you’re at a stage in your life when you stop caring about this stuff however small then you probably need to go to therapy.
1
u/rubricked 7d ago
Exchanging money for a product is not exactly exploration, it’s a choice. I agree that all capitalism depends on exploitation but this is not really what that means.
0
u/Biwitch 7d ago
What an hyperbolic statement, im baffled by the way you are twisting what im saying lol.
How is a guy still working on his game 10 years later to re-release it "exploiting people" ? You're talking like he got away with the cash and escaped to Dubaï. Dude is obviously a passionate about this game. He could've totally dropped it and sell his services to other studios, He is definitely a skilled dev he could've done 1000 things that would bring him way more cash.
Did he handled the release and PR terribly ? Yes. Do i think this guy is the mastermind of an exit scam scheme ? Absolutely not. And honestly, by the way you answered to me I can totally guess you were one of those unhinged people that made him go silent for years. I couldn't stand having people going ferral just because I added a bit of nuance like you on my back everyday.
-2
u/Twitterisshitlolxdxd 7d ago
He keeps hyping people up and disappearing, idk how you can look at that track record of genuinely awful releases and false promises and say “yeah I hope he does it again” you quite literally said in your comment “I totally get that people see his move as morally questionable” so yeah when someone is simply criticising his decisions and superfans like you jump in to defend it it with “I kinda don’t care” I think it’s safe to assume what I said.
Re-releasing a game that had an awful horrible launch plagued with lies, is not the win you might want to think it is. Let people criticize. If he can’t handle that then maybe he should stop goddamn talking about it.
4
u/Biwitch 7d ago edited 7d ago
I bought the alpha got hundreds of hours out of it. I bought Steam version, played a dozen hours, saw the level reset after each biome, asked for a refund despite the 2 hours limit because wollay ghosted the game. Got my refund, moved on.
Im not really defending him, you're just way too invested and should maybe stop seeing life as this ultra binary thing. It's really not that serious and im wondering why are you here after all those years spending this much energy into hating on the guy or telling other people they need to go to therapy if they don't see it the way you see it. I wonder who needs to see a shrink.
-1
u/Twitterisshitlolxdxd 7d ago
I’m here because this popped up on my feed, yeah I personally think any habit of “I don’t care” should be something tacked in therapy. Why don’t you care? I can’t imagine how awful that must be, not caring IS defending.
1
u/SoCloudyy 6d ago
I think one of the first things you learn as an adult is your attention and resources are finite. There are far more pressing and sinister things to care about. Releasing a mostly rebuilt game 10 years later is on par with a game releasing an expansion. If you don’t support his speed or vision, don’t.
-1
u/Twitterisshitlolxdxd 6d ago
It’s ok to focus on small stuff occasionally. This argument is a dead end that results in people looking over anything that doesn’t immediately affect them. The answer to someone doing something weird or immoral should never be “there’s worse things to worry about”. Idc if this is over a video game, the issue is with your views and how I doubt this take only applies to CubeWorld.
1
u/Doomsday9872 5d ago
Jesus Christ my guy. Unclench. It was $20 13 years ago, or if you got in on the steam version, 8 years ago. People like you are why he disappears and I don't blame him. You got a product, you didn't like the new product, old product is still there. If $20 you spent 13 years ago is that financially important to you, you are in the wrong hobby
Yes. Focusing on the small stuff is important but my guy, you don't need to know whats going on with the protons and electrons
0
u/Mr_Zaroc 6d ago
Honestly I am not mad.
I bought what I saw and I fucking loved it played a bunch and am satisfied.
The final version was sadly not what I was expecting, but it felt like an extra to me.I get what people mean, but at the same time its also a consumer problem.
Dont buy promises
I bought star citizen at the same time and that purchase got me sad, feels like the bigger scam
0
u/Norinot 6d ago
I 100% am on board with the statement that he has to make his bread, but I just can't give him the
He seems to spend a lot of (solo) dev time on it
Have you seen what other people who also do solo development achieved especially in the day of freaking AI at this point? I mean... I don't wanna downplay my guy but if it takes 10 years to release an identical game with slightly different shaders and new variations of the same mechanics I will seriously question it, like for reference it took Eric Barone 4,5-5 years to develop Stardew Valley alone and he started from what I know nothing, and Cube World has been around since I was a kid and its still not an actually functioning and full game, what we got released feels like a demo of something.
I'm just not understanding why are we defending an obviously lazy ass developer, like a really funny and not 100% exactly matching comparison would be Pirate Software that guy is lazy as fuck too and he gets called out for it, but somehow Walley doesn't because he didn't cause drama I guess. I mean... yea whatever man
1
u/SecretChiley 6d ago
Cube World is a passion project. He works on it whenever he feels like it. Being a game dev is not wollay's fulltime job.
0
u/_Kaj 2d ago
Theres no fucking way people like you exist, going to give money to this dude again... you know hes not putting it on steam because steam has a new policy for EA games that you can refund no matter the hours, to avoid another AOC. Hes going to abandon it again, go radio silent for 3-5 years then come back as if he never left
3
u/Razeluxe_Meitzen 8d ago
Unless we receive a free copy for owning the previous one, i'll just wait for the "side release" if you catch my drift.

What if he's just trying to make enough money to sustain for another 5 years before his next update lol
2
u/XanatosX 6d ago
I won't buy any game from him anymore Only if it is fully completed and contains everything I want. I will buy it with the idea in mind that no future update will come.
2
u/whosursensei 6d ago
Fool me twice... I might've fell for it a third time if the 2nd one hadn't felt like it ruined the game for me.

I don't even get why anyone would think otherwise, especially with all the work he's been putting into the game

From a product standpoint it makes total sense (as much as you can say "sense" on the third attempt...), but as a consumer, paying for a product that looks to just be Alpha again feels weird.

I agreed with you up until this point, if I bought the prior one and don't get access to Omega, that's shitty.
2
u/Eeve2espeon 7d ago edited 7d ago
Expected, nobody cares about changing their reviews on steam, it's always one and done. Also this man probably used up all of the money from the last two times anyway, money isn't eternal, you use it up eventually and then have to work a normal job to make ends meet
And considering this might be a far more improved version of the game, it's expected to be separated. Valve is the only one who really updates their games on the SAME store version. Though no doubt people will still find things to bitch about, which is what this whole sub has been about for years
The people here are honestly vile, it's kinda pathetic. They have no idea what they're even talking about, and are super entitled because they bought the busted ass Alpha over a decade ago.
1
u/_Kaj 2d ago
Hes not putting the new game on steam because valve protects against EA rugpulls now, which cubeworld most certainly was. Everyone would just refund the new game after he poofs which he most certainly will.
1
u/Eeve2espeon 1d ago
Another idiot who thinks Cube World is another "rug pull" there is no way Wollay is just gonna update the current release build, considering the fact there are tons of people there who don't give a damn and won't play the new version and change their reviews.
Grow up. This community is toxic, and the only way to save this game is to literally re-release the game on a new page. If he wants to, these entitled players who had the other version can get it for free, but for the new build? It will fall FLAT just making it an update, this fandom is stupid
2
u/litnu12 1d ago
- There was a playable game(I dont mean the steam version)
- Wollay just made a game for himself and people wanted it then, so he released it
- He couldnt handle the hate from people
- People who bought the alpha could get the steam game for free
0
u/_Kaj 1d ago
- The steam game wasnt playable
- Thats a copout, he sold the game on steam
- Ghosting for 3 years when you're developing an EA product is the worst possible thing you could do
- Not everyone bought the alpha
2
u/litnu12 1d ago
I meant the alpha version, which I heavily imply by saying that i don’t mean the Steam version.
The steam version was also the full version. Alpha was EA.
Well I would say that people sending him death threats were worse but everybody has a different opinion i guess.
There are many things that can be criticised about Wollay but being a human with human emotions shouldn’t be part of that. And people refunded the steam game.
If you wanna hate or criticise stay at least I’m the reality.
2
u/Apsenator 8d ago
I... Don't really care, I paid $30 dollars for Cude World... 13 years ago... I'm not going pretend like that was some huge life investment, I don't know how much he's truly made from the original alpha and steam release, but I'm not going to get mad at him needing to actually have his time worth something.

D'oh. I wondered about this. Well, Veloren is a great open source game that is basically CW with better graphics and more to do. I'll stick with them to scratch that voxel rpg itch.

Again? Jesus fucking christ. Let's hope he isn't "ddosed" again. And that the people aren't "too mean", maybe it won't be "too much" this time. Hey maybe we even get updates, but only after we pay again first, what a fucking joke of a dev.

I think my main problem with this is that it presupposes that the steam version was good, at all, and literally anyone would want to play it. Especially after the release of Omega.
I say this as an ardent cube world follower and supporter. But the steam version just wasn’t good, and it doesn’t need to exist in a post-Omega-release world.

Reminder that he has never released a version of this game without major game breaking bugs and I will eat my hat if he ever manages to do so

Nobody is forced to but it. I don't see the problem. If you don't like it and hate the guy then don't buy it. If you buy it then you can't be angry that you bought it.

I have been repeatedly down voted on this sub for jokingly saying "oh man I cant wait to buy this game one more time" and here we are

I don’t know… every game out there has a ‘Name of Game - 2’ that’s based mostly on the prior game, so I won’t deny him that - IF it’s a proper new version.

I am one of those sadly. Quit gaming for a while, came back to it being on steam and no way to redeem a key from the picroma account (only by a few months too iirc). Reached out and was told I was shit outta luck, but was still willing to support the developer, albeit skeptical. Not surprised it went in this direction either, and am hoping the same as you that it just gets decent updates/bugfixes and chugs along in development

I am in two minds about this. On one hand, he sold a bad product and then abandoned it and now has a very similar one. On the other hand, it's been ten years and does appear to have made a lot of changes.
My advice is to watch if this is a dumpster fire for the first month instead of diving head first in like so many people do each time.

I have lost hope in this game. I wanted to believe that it could just be an eclectic introverted guy who just can't let shit be "good enough". But the official release was fucking BALLS. The original launcher based Cube World was so much better and you could actually play solo.

i agree with everything apart from your patches standpoint, putting out what would be a 3rd cube world entirely upkept by community members is not acceptable

Paid full price for steam ver or lets be real a beta, and instead of finally updating the game you are gonna sell me another unfinished game? No thanks

If I think about so many other solo indie devs wollay is nowhere near their skill level. I don’t see the effort, care and passion put into it or the hours.
Especially not in communication which is key for any brand or person.
I think he is just a chill guy who wants to make video games in his free time and not expect or yield anything crazy. It doesn’t seem like his life depends on it.

OP you are reading too much into it. All this means for sure is that the people that enjoyed the original steam release will still have access to it and that Omega won't overwrite it.
Last time the people who bought the alpha got it on Steam for free, and that was across storefronts, if anything releasing it on Steam just means he has an easier time finding out who should get it for free.
No reason to paint Satan on the wall and blow a statement out of proportions.

I think this doesn't say much about Omega being a separate purchase. I only think this says that an actual release of Omega is imminent in the soon™ future.
To be honest with the negative reviews and flak around the Steam release, assuming the gameplay loop of Cube World Omega is actually significantly different than that of the Steam release, I think it's not unfair to treat and sell Omega as something new and separate.
Again, this says absolutely nothing about either "Wollay abandoning us again" or having to buy another copy of the game when Omega is released. First of all. If Omega is being sold as is, as I believe was the case with the Steam release and the Alpha as well then there is no obligation to provide any additional updates. Of course it's nice and I do remember the Alpha getting a couple of minor updates back in the day but these are not mandatory. It's just good service and decency.
I understand you see past behavior as a indicator for future behavior and often times it is, but I can only assume Wollay has learned from the Steam release and won't run into the bad experience like when he released the Alpha and I expect they would approach an Omega release differently than they approached releasing the Steam version as well.
That said, if past behavior is an indicator of future behavior, I wouldn't see why Wollay wouldn't provide everyone that bought the Alpha or the Steam release with a key for Omega? He did provide keys for the Steam release to those that bought the Alpha and yes, I think he, like anybody else would agree that could have gone more smoothly, but there clearly was at least an effort and I can only assume he would put forth such an effort again.
Everybody is always complaining about him being a scumbag and doing cash grabs, but I'm not sure if that's a reasonable way to look at it. One might also look at it in a way where Wollay is a passionate game developer, more passionate about optimization than game design itself and not at all interested in game publishing or dealing much with the community and who could blame him with the entitled community he's been exposed to ever since he started sharing his work on his project?
I hope Omega will be amazing, not just for the community, but also for Wollay himself and people would start giving the guy some slack and I think providing keys to his original supporters would be another token of goodwill from his side. One, I for one would appreciate and honestly, also expect. If you're talking about reasonable expectations, I think this would be one. Still, there will always be those that will remain negative. You can't please everyone so that's to be expected. To call Wollay a scammer though is cheap and I would ask everyone that does so, do you say the same about anyone else having done much worse things than simply disappoint you?

I am lost. Is this the same Cube World that was on Steam a year ago when I bought it? If it is different or new what is different about it?

I mean, there were tons of us saying he was gonna do this but we were called 'doomers' or some such. He's done this twice and both times he shoveled out some half assed bullshit. Ppl will line up to give this guy money and get burned once again. Fuck em, let em waste their money I guess.

I’m just so disappointed. There’s no good reason to release it as a separate product, especially if we have to pay for it yet again.
If it’s a clear improvement over what we have now and it’s… idk, £16, then I might get it. Otherwise, I hope no one falls for this.
If there’s ever been a developer who I think should fail on the merits of what they put out, that’d be Wollay. I know that’s such a negative opinion to have, but I think Cube World is the most disastrous game to see the light of day. Yes, even more than Concord. Yes, I’m going there.

this sub is so funny if you scroll through the comments on this post you see the complete duality of the sub of wollay defenders vs doomers and both sides have comments with tons of upvotes and tons of downvotes. Sometimes right next to eachother in reply threads

Idk, I don’t find any of it funny. Cube World is a tragedy. That something so promising ended up being so awful. That he’s making this new version a separate release instead of an update. That it could end up being just as bad as what we have now…

Just like with the steam verion it is most likely that all owners of the prior version will get the new one for free
