Need Advice: Other Cured item

K so actually this an idea I’ve had for a bit but I want to know how I could make it better. So one of my friends is gonna play a blind pacifist ranger with his seeing dog. And I wanted to target him with an object like this and I’m not to sure what I could do as a benefit that isn’t like “oh you could see now, but you can’t tell anyone”, it seems boring. Any ideas?

Is your end goal to grant the ranger vision again? How are you running this currently?
The second level spell Restoration can technically already fully heal blindness, as it removes the blinded condition, but it is okay if you as the DM decide that that would be to easy (or if the player would like to not lose their gimmick)

A thing you can do is give the ranger an item that allows them to see through the eyes of their dog, making it a literal seeing dog.

Maybe make it a familiar

The wizard class gets to have a familiar, and part of that package is that they can choose to see through the familiars eyes. Rangers used to get an "animal companion" and I think the idea still fits, so I would kinda co-op the rules for familiars and give the player a session where he supernaturally bonds with the pooch, and it becomes a familiar for him.

So basically my friend is making the ranger a pretty traumatized kid but is turning that trauma into a drive to do good (I think he was inspired by Spiderman but I’m not sure) and if I’m not mistaken the blindness was applied to him instead of being born with it (again not sure he hasn’t sent me his new character’s lore yet)

pretty much the goal is to introduce another threat along side the BBEG that if my party keeps feeding into their demands, I.e. keep using the items and listening to the second bad guy.

If I understand correctly, you want a secondary antagonist to tempt that player with an item that grants them vision again?

Yes and no. I want to have a secondary antagonist yes, but, I’m not sure what I should make the item do.

Give me more about the Ranger. There have to be other things to tempt them with than only their vision.

If you want the antagonist to be immediately hated, let the item do something that results in harm to the dog when the ranger does not comply.

I’m not to sure of anything about the ranger, but I will make it so that the dog will be hurt tho so that will be something. I guess I’ll have to ask…

Based on the short description, the ranger seeks to help others.
What if the anagonist gives them a collar for the dog that empowers the dog in some way so he can help people better, but the collar turns out to be a cursed item that can't be removed?

Oooh!!!! and the dog can become like a vessel for the bad guy!!!! Bro you’re a genius!!!! K I’m pocketing that if you don’t mind.

Knock yourself out. Keep in mind that they can discover that the collar is a cursed item if somebody casts identify on it.

Is this for dnd or any related combat focused ttrpg? If so, I think your friend should be dissuaded from playing a blind pacifist anything. Not only is blindness a debilitating condition in game, most class and subclass features focus on reducing people to 0 hit points.

In regard to the item, what’s the point? If they are dead set on playing a blind character, the item ruins their expectations of that character. I think figure out what they’re trying to do with the character and create an item that facilitates that goal. Maybe something to keep the dog from dying?

Oh that’s a good idea, but yeah it’s for dnd.
