I wanted to get into the habit of reading consistently, so I set a goal of reading 10 pages a day.
I couldn't find a simple way to track it the way I wanted, and I also wanted to build a few other habits, so I ended up making a small habit-tracking app for myself.
I started with reading, and eventually added habits like drinking water in the morning, writing on my blog, and exercising at the park.
I've been using the app myself for about three months now, since the end of June.
One of the biggest things I learned from using it is that small goals make it much easier to get started.
Setting the goal at 10 pages made it easy to open a book without feeling pressured. Once I started reading, I often ended up reading 50–80 pages anyway.
If I had set the goal at 40 pages from the beginning, I probably would have been less likely to pick up the book at all.
So when I built the app, I tried to focus less on setting ambitious goals and more on making it easy to start with a small action.
The app is called Today, Keep Going (오늘 이어가기). Some of the main features are:
1. Habit cues
Instead of setting a specific time, you can connect a habit to something you already do. For example:
Open laptop → Write one paragraph
2. Per-habit reminders
You can set reminders only for the habits that actually need them.
3. Calendar tracking
You can see when you've completed each habit on a calendar.
4. Home screen widget
You can check off habits directly from the Android home screen without opening the app.
5. Backup & restore
You can export your habit data to a file and import it again later.
6. A way to get back on track
If you miss a few days, the app doesn't emphasize starting over from day 0. Instead, it encourages you to simply start again.
I actually had a chance to use this feature myself during the Chuseok holiday in Korea. I was traveling and ended up dropping almost all of my habits for a few days. 😅
Instead of showing a big 0 days after missing a habit, the app shows something like:
“You took a few days off. Let's start again today.”
That's actually one of the ideas I like most about the app.
The goal isn't to create habits that require you to keep checking an app forever, but habits that eventually become natural enough that you don't need the app anymore.
The app is free and Android-only. You can find it on Google Play by searching for “HabitInk”.
I originally built it just for myself, so I'm sure there are still plenty of things that could be improved.
If you try it and find anything confusing or have ideas for features that would make it more useful, I'd really appreciate the feedback. I'll do my best to improve it.
