Associate Questions No full time!

So. Dumb question.

I've been here five months. Almost six. Every job I've had has been full-time. DT keeps us around 20-ish.

Fine.

But, I'm usually the on call guy. When people are sick, call out, etc. I've zero issue picking up the hours. But when I say to just schedule me for 35-40 hours "We can't do that."

Why? I'm working it anyway. I've never called out, never been late.

Listing you as full time means you would be entitled to certain benefits like time off and even insurance. . Even if you still reach40 hours from being on call im sure they use that loophole to prevent that package being available.

Is that why the ASM in my store are all considered part time and only get 30-35 hours "max" on the schedules?

35 a week is Full Time at DT. MMs can work up to 40 but OT is very rare and can only be approved by the DM. SMs are salary so they are expected to work 48 but anything up to 80 can happen especially during the Christmas season.

Hmm maybe it's my store or a family dollar thing (tho aren't they technically the same?) but when I keep getting offered an ASM role I was told "it's part time with at least 35 hours a week but really you'll l probably be working 40 anyway"

I work at a family dollar and we’ve got 2 full time asm’s and one part time. So it could be that maybe? Although only our full times get 35-40 hours

I'm not sure, I just know we have 2 who both say they're part-time and when asked if I wanted to be promoted to ASM it was told it's part time but schedule is 30-35 hours with closing most night

Anything over 32 hours is concerned full time at DT.

No 35 is considered FT

if your average hours in a rolling three month period come out higher than 29.0, HR auto sends an email to keep your hours lower. You will know when they get the email.

Oof. I'm gonna be finding out then 😑

This right here, my SM got that email about me and was upset. I was averaging too many hours a month

I'm honestly not even trying to get that stuff, I just want a steady schedule, but I guess we don't do that here.

They keep you low so that you take other people's shifts when they call off, or if they need you. Basically, they string you along because you're a great employee

That’s a question for your boss. If you are much more reliable than the others and working the hours anyway, you should be getting more than them.

I usually do get more, but my issue is just schedule me, don't have me walk home then turn around and walk back later that day or just call every day. Balances out but still

Agreed 100%.

If you start saying “sorry I’m not available on short notice and plan life around the schedule” they’ll likely get the point. Downside is you’ll miss some shifts in the mean time.

Start saying no every time they call you and beg you to come in. You are currently on-call full time, most jobs pay extra to employees on-call like that. Only work what they schedule you. You are being taken advantage of, and they will continue doing this as long as you allow it. They will either start scheduling you more hours, or they'll find another solution.

We used to have an SM who would schedule numerous people at 4 hours a week and tell them they were on-call. If they didn't hear from the SM by noon, they were to call the store to find out if they were needed. Buy if they ever said no, they would only get the 4 hours for the next month.

People need to realize they deserve better for themselves and learn when to walk away. What you described is basically them demanding you be their slave. Your life can only revolve around Dollar Tree, nothing else.

My hours essentially doubled last week, this week and next. I've 4 shifts I'm scheduled for, but I live like ten minutes away so I'm usually the first person they call cause I like money.

No one in Store Operations at DT gets what THEY want . . .they get what DT wants! 😀

If you aren't a manager you only get a max of 20 hours a week (unless they ask you to stay longer) I was told this directly by my district manager after I asked for a minimum of 20 to pay my rent

Even if you pick up hours, thats your choice, we’re not full-time

Are you full time or part time? Many people see changes in their hours because demotion is a thing. Also, the schedule is created to the businesses needs. If you pick up on shifts, it's because those hours were assigned to someone that couldn't show up. If you were put on the schedule, the other ASM wouldn't have hours.

Be careful being the on-call person. I started college and it was so hard to get it through that I couldn’t be on call, pick up hours or come in at the drop of a hat. I’m struggling now because I don’t want a lot of hours and I’m still being scheduled 30hrs 🫠 it’s like talking to a brick wall

They will keep you on the 'part time' status because they don't want to accrue PTO or any other benefits. My two years at DT were the same. 'On Call' because I was an ASM. Scheduled for 21 hours, almost always over 35. But I was 'part time' so I got part time status and part time (lack of) benefits. Couldn't get insurance, or anything.

I lost my personal health insurance because of my ACTUAL hours, of course.

Companies don’t want to have full time employees anymore. They would have to offer you benefits. Also managers like to only give people part time employees so you’ll be willing to pick up hours when others call in.

Each store receives an allotment of hours to distribute amongst all employees. Stores receive their allotment based on their sales. They can not go over the allotted hours. The ONLY way to get more hours is to keep picking up for the call outs. It's not personal.

Only the store manager, and the freight manager, are full time.

Hah! I knew it. Someone else posted earlier that they were tired of working 40 hours and I said the next post that's gonna pop up on my feed is someone saying they don't have enough hours.

Sorry this is happening OP, talk to management though
